Chapter 346 Putting the Cart Before the Horse?

As Fiona kept struggling, her strength started to wane, but she was still super upset, muttering to herself, "You don't love me anymore, do you?"

Her voice choked with emotion, and the anger on her face slowly turned to sadness. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks, soaking the collar of her hospital gown.

Right then, Fiona looked so pitiful and helpless. Her earlier frantic actions seemed like a front to hide her inner vulnerability.

Seeing Fiona like this, I was hit by a wave of sorrow.

I cautiously approached her and said softly, "Fiona, I know it's tough to accept right now, but we were really just talking about how to save Lila. Lanny not only caused your car accident but also kidnapped Lila. We don't know if she's alive or dead, and we're really worried."

David chimed in, "Yeah, Fiona, you're the only one in my heart. After all these years, don't you know me? How could I ever hurt you?"

As he spoke, his eyes reddened slightly.

Fiona's body trembled at this, and her sobs gradually softened. She looked up at David with tear-filled eyes and asked in a trembling voice, "Really? Do you really still love me?"

David gave a slight nod and gently grasped Fiona's arm, his movements tender and cautious, as if afraid of hitting a sensitive nerve.

"Fiona, let's not talk here. You're still not fully recovered. I'll take you back to the hospital." His voice was gentle.

Fiona nodded weakly, looking exhausted and frail. She allowed David to support her as they walked unsteadily toward the door.

Their figures gradually receded, leaving me standing alone.

Looking around, I saw the office staff still in shock from the earlier scene. I felt deeply embarrassed and bowed slightly, sincerely apologizing to the employees, "I'm really sorry for disturbing your work with our personal matters."

The employees waved their hands, indicating it was okay.

I tidied up the office supplies that Fiona had scattered on the floor and then left the office under everyone's gaze.

David would be fully occupied with taking care of Fiona for the time being, so I couldn't count on his help.

A new idea popped into my head: I should ask Nicholas for help. Maybe he could persuade Lucas to join me.

After all, Lila was Nicholas's daughter-in-law. Besides, Nicholas had certain means and influence. If I could get his support, the chances of rescuing Lila would significantly improve.

With that thought, I didn't waste a second and headed straight for Nicholas's estate.

I jogged to the nearest street, flagged down a cab, and urged the driver to hurry.

Breathing heavily, I spoke with urgency. The driver looked at me in the rearview mirror, sensing the emergency, and slammed on the gas, speeding away.

The scenery along the way blurred past, and I had no thought to appreciate it.

Images of Lila in danger kept flashing through my mind, and every passing second felt like a needle pricking my heart.

Time was of the essence. Lila was waiting for us to save her. I silently prayed that Nicholas would lend us a hand and help us carry out the rescue mission smoothly. Finally, the car stopped in front of Nicholas's estate. Taking a deep breath, I hurried toward the entrance, my heart pounding.

Nicholas's estate loomed as quiet and imposing as ever.

As soon as I stepped into the courtyard, a butler in a crisp suit approached me.

"I'm Diana. I have an urgent matter to discuss with Nicholas," I said, handing over my business card.

The butler examined the card for a moment, frowning slightly. "Mr. Jackson is not seeing visitors today. Please come back another day," he said, his tone polite yet firm.

Just then, a heated argument erupted from the direction of the study. The butler and I turned our heads simultaneously, hearing Lucas's voice filled with suppressed anger. "Dad, you know better than anyone the situation Lila is in!"

Nicholas retorted, "Lucas, look at yourself. All you do is revolve around that Lila. What about the research project you promised me? There's been no progress, and now you want to use my resources to save Lila? This is absurd!"

"Dad, Lila is in danger. I can't just ignore it. She's my wife," Lucas's voice was laced with urgency and a sense of responsibility.

"Danger? If you had completed the research project and achieved something, there would be plenty of ways to save her. Now, the project is stalled, and all your thoughts are on Lila. How can you achieve anything?" Nicholas's tone was extremely stern.

My heart tightened. After a moment's hesitation, I mustered the courage to knock on the door.

"Come in!" Nicholas's impatient voice came from inside.

Seeing me, both Nicholas and Lucas were taken aback.

I respectfully greeted them, "Godfather, I know it's not the best time to disturb you, but I'm really anxious about Lila."

I continued, "I overheard Lucas saying he wanted to use your resources to save Lila. I want to help too."

Nicholas scrutinized me for a moment and said, "You're quite brave, knowing I'm angry with him but still daring to ask for my help. Lucas can't even handle his own business, and he wants to save Lila. It's putting the cart before the horse."

Lucas's face was full of worry, and he sighed helplessly, "Dad, I want to complete the project, but I can't solve the technical problems. I'm really at a loss."

Hearing this, I had a hunch that it was because of a certain patent that Lucas couldn't move forward with the project.

So I said, "Regarding Lucas's project, I might be able to help. After all, I used to follow up on this project. We can work on saving Lila while advancing the project. What do you think?"

Nicholas listened, a thoughtful look in his eyes, and he didn't respond immediately. Lucas, naturally impatient, asked, "Do you really have a way?"

I nodded. "No matter what, we can try. I'll help Lucas solve the project issues. But Lila's situation is urgent and can't be delayed."

The study fell into a brief silence. After a long while, Nicholas slowly spoke, "Alright, since you're so determined, I'll give Lucas another chance."

Then he turned to Lucas and said, "If you still can't complete the project, don't bring up saving Lila again."

Lucas nodded repeatedly.
