Chapter 485 Fiona's Obsession
"Fiona, why did you..."
Edward barely got the words out before Fiona raised her hand to cut him off.
Her eyes were sharp as she glanced between us, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
"Nicholas, that old bastard, should've been taken down ages ago. I've been waiting for this moment."
A flash of ruthlessness crossed Fiona's eyes.
"His remaining forces won't escape either. I've set everything up; none of them will get away."
I was stunned. I hadn't realized Fiona had such a meticulous plan. Why had she kept it from us?
"Fiona, this is huge. Why didn't you talk to us about it? It's too dangerous."
"Talk?" Fiona let out a cold laugh, her red lips curling slightly, but her eyes were full of mockery.
"You two are so inseparable now, what do you need me for? I fell for you the moment I first saw you, but I lost to Diana back then. Now that old feelings have rekindled, I've lost again."
Fiona's gaze lingered on our clasped hands, her voice thick with jealousy.
"But it doesn't matter. Who cares about love when taking down Nicholas is the best revenge!"
I was taken aback, not expecting Fiona to turn her unfulfilled feelings into such a fierce obsession.
"Fiona, I..." Edward's voice was full of guilt.
"What happened before, it was my fault."
Fiona tossed her hair back nonchalantly, her tone dismissive.
"That's all in the past. You don't need to apologize. You can't force feelings."
I felt Edward's arm tense in my grip. Fiona stepped closer, her red-bottomed heels clicking on the floor, the scent of her rose perfume mixed with the smell of gunpowder, making it hard for me to breathe.
I wanted to explain, but Fiona's look stopped me.
"Diana, you don't need to say anything. I know you and Edward are back together. That's good."
Fiona smoothed out a wrinkle in her sleeve, her voice carrying a hint of sadness.
"But this is something I have to do myself. No one can stop me," I spoke urgently.
"Fiona, don't be so extreme. David still cares about you. You should get back together and stop taking risks alone."
"Get back together?" Fiona scoffed, her fingers tracing the family crest on her crocodile leather handbag, her eyes full of disdain.
"He frowns at the mere sight of a business negotiation, saying it's too dirty. Diana, when was the last time you saw David? At the charity gala, you only saw his father, right? And then nothing."
I was stunned, my thoughts drifting back to that charity gala. Under the crystal chandelier, I had only managed to nod at Daniel in his suit, scanning the room but never seeing David. Since then, David's social media had gone silent, as if he had vanished. Even when Edward was hospitalized, I had to juggle taking care of him and managing the company alone, never seeing David once. I had tried calling him, but only got a cold automated message; my texts went unanswered.
Fiona snorted and continued, "He didn't want to face all this, so he fled abroad long ago."
"How could that be?"
I instinctively reached for my phone, suddenly recalling seeing Daniel yelling at thin air outside the Wilson Group building last week.
"How long are you going to be a coward?"
I had thought Daniel was on the phone, but now I realized his voice had echoed in the empty hallway.
Edward squeezed my hand, the warmth of his touch bringing me back to the present. Fiona was already walking towards the convoy, suddenly laughing out loud.
"Nicholas's remaining lackeys are just lambs to the slaughter. Once I burn his lair to the ground, the entire Southeast Region's black market will tremble."
Edward stepped forward, his back straight under his suit.
"Fiona, you know Nicholas's men still have an arsenal. You can't handle this alone!"
The wind from Edward's movement made the pearl earring behind Fiona's ear sway gently.
I quickly followed, trying to grab her cold wrist.
"Yes, let us help you. At least we can watch each other's backs."
Fiona yanked her hand away, her high heels screeching on the marble floor.
As she turned, her black dress brushed against my leg, the scent of roses and gunpowder growing stronger.
"Now you two are all lovey-dovey and want to meddle in my plans? Do you think the Griffin family's private army is just for show?"
"Fiona!" Edward grabbed her wrist, but she twisted out of his grip with a swift move.
Fiona stepped back, adjusting her pearl necklace, four bodyguards in black stepping forward, their suits revealing the outlines of gun holsters.
"My dad brought in elite security from three companies and set seven traps in Nicholas's laundering accounts. Did you know that?"
Edward sneered, his fingers brushing the family crest on her handbag.
"The Griffin family's intelligence network has infiltrated the Southeast Region's black market. Your hot-bloodedness will only mess things up."
I looked at the orderly line of black cars behind Edward, realizing that Fiona's half-month disappearance had been filled with the Griffin family's private jets flying back and forth overseas.
"Fiona, we won't hold you back," I said urgently, "At least let us share the risk."
"Risk?" Fiona suddenly leaned in, her warm breath on my face, signaling a bodyguard to open the trunk. Amid the clinking of metal, she picked up a grenade, twirling it in her fingers.
"The Griffin family's armed forces are on standby at the border. What can you do alongside them that the military can't?"
Edward's Adam's apple bobbed, his voice low and strained, "Fiona, I didn't realize you had such a grand plan."
Fiona's lips curled into a cold smile. "Now you're scared? Once I deal with Nicholas's remnants, I'll return to Ignis to continue the family's overseas trade. It's more interesting than this mess."
Fiona suddenly leaned close to my ear. "Diana, take care of your child."
With that, she opened the car door and got in, her bodyguards quickly following suit. The convoy's headlights lit up simultaneously, like a steel serpent.
"If you don't want to see your photos in tomorrow's obituaries, stay out of the Griffin family's business."
As the engines roared, the Maybach-led convoy sped away, leaving a trail of taillights. I stared after them, the image of Fiona twirling the grenade still vivid in my mind.
Edward suddenly gripped my hand tightly, his knuckles white with the effort.
"Fiona is using the Griffin family's power for a final reckoning. She's pushing us away to keep us safe."
