Chapter 395 It isn't Just My Effort

My brow furrowed right away, the sudden crisis shoving my earlier emotional mess aside. I shifted my gaze from Skylar to Edward, focusing hard.

"Do they have new moves?" I asked urgently, my voice rising with anxiety, all my personal issues forgotten.

Skylar, still lost in the joy of her new gift, was oblivious to the tension among the adults. She played with her toy, her face lit up with a happy smile, occasionally letting out a soft giggle.

Alaric stood quietly nearby, a hint of sadness crossing his face. He probably realized that my attention was now entirely consumed by the work emergency.

Edward's expression grew more serious. He said, "Jeffrey and Anne have reached a preliminary agreement. They plan to inject funds within a week and officially get involved in the real estate project."

I bit my lip, thinking for a moment before responding, "We need to reassess the project timeline and risk points quickly. We have to find a countermeasure before they act. Where's David?"

Given the gravity of the situation, David couldn't possibly remain indifferent. I looked around but didn't see him.

Edward replied, "David said that since Jeffrey is the key player, we need to find a way to approach him, figure out his intentions. David is leveraging the Wilson family's connections to see if anyone can help us get in touch with Jeffrey."

He gazed into the distance, his eyes scanning the bustling street as if seeking inspiration from the chaos. He sighed softly, "I've heard the Adams family is powerful and always cautious. Getting close to Jeffrey won't be easy."

I knew that given my relationship with Jeffrey, it wasn't convenient for me to approach him directly, so I fell into deep thought.

"Mom, when are we going home?" Skylar asked, hugging my leg, seemingly tired of standing on the street.

I was about to respond when Alaric spoke up first, "Diana, work is important. You go ahead. I'll take Skylar home."

He forced a smile, but the sadness in his eyes was unmistakable. My heart ached, yet the work crisis was pressing, leaving no room for distraction.

I said, "Alaric, thank you for understanding. Please take care of Skylar for now. I'll be back as soon as I can."

I knelt down and gently instructed Skylar. She nodded obediently, her eyes reflecting a trace of confusion, and allowed Alaric to lead her away.

Watching the two of them walk away, I couldn't help but occasionally recall Alaric's dejected expression and Skylar's innocent questions.

Edward looked at me with concern, stepping forward and saying gently, "Diana, don't push yourself too hard. We'll handle the work together. As for your feelings, no matter what you decide, I just want you to be happy."I met Edward's gaze, and in that moment, I saw an unprecedented sincerity and care in his eyes. A warm feeling surged through me, and I was slightly moved. I said, "Thanks, Edward."

I knew that at this critical moment, I had to set aside my personal feelings and focus on the work challenges. But how would I resolve my emotional dilemmas after the work crisis? I had no idea.

I quickly gathered my thoughts, regaining my usual composure. "Alright, let's not overthink it. The priority is to come up with a plan to counter Jeffrey and Anne. Let's go see David."

Edward nodded, and we got into the car.

When we arrived, David was sitting in his office, looking worried. He kept picking up and putting down his phone, his fingers trembling slightly each time, revealing a blend of hope and disappointment.

The repeated rejections from the other end of the line cast a tense atmosphere over the office. Seeing us, David forced a smile.

Edward explained, "I spread the word that we found a funding source and made an investment. Anne couldn't resist and had Jeffrey increase their investment."

I nodded slightly, a hint of admiration in my eyes. "Edward, that was a brilliant move! By leaking the news about the funding, you successfully lured Anne into seeking more investment from Jeffrey, exposing their new actions. Without your strategy, who knows how long we would have waited for them to show their hand."

David put down his phone and chimed in, "Yes, Edward, we owe this to your strategy."

Edward waved it off modestly and said, "It wasn't just my effort. Besides, we still face significant pressure. The Adams family is powerful and cautious. To successfully counter them, we need the Wilson family's influence."

David's worry deepened, and he sighed heavily, his shoulders slumping as if drained of energy. "But I'm not having much luck. The friends I can contact are wary of the Adams family's power. Most are hesitant to help. My calls have been answered with either evasions or outright refusals."

Suddenly, a name flashed in my mind—Harvey, a former client.

Clearing my throat, I broke the heavy silence. "I might have an idea. I had a client named Harvey. Jeffrey is his company's long-term legal advisor. They have a deep connection, especially in business matters. Harvey was the client when Lanny tried to make things difficult for me. Initially, I faced immense pressure, but after multiple in-depth discussions, I resolved Harvey's company's issues, and we built a strong relationship."

Bringing up Lanny made David's expression shift to one of discomfort. Noticing his expression, I softened and smiled. "But that's all in the past. Thanks to that experience, Harvey and I established deep trust. Although we haven't been in touch for a while, maybe I can reach out to him and find a way to connect with Jeffrey, to see what he's planning."
