Chapter 283 Red Balloon
Even though the subsidiary was pretty big, Theo ran it so smoothly that I had loads of time to hang out with Skylar.
Before we knew it, it was Lila and Lucas's wedding day. Skylar got the gig as the flower girl.
Sunlight poured through the church's stained glass windows, splashing colorful patterns all over the floor.
The church was packed, everyone buzzing with excitement for the ceremony to kick off. Skylar, in her snow-white lace dress, stood at the entrance clutching a flower basket.
As the wedding march started, Skylar began her walk down the aisle.
Every now and then, she'd grab a handful of pink and white petals from her basket and toss them into the air, the petals drifting down like snowflakes onto the red carpet.
Right behind Skylar was Lila, looking stunning in her floor-length wedding gown. Her face was glowing with happiness as she made her way towards Lucas at the end of the aisle.
When Lila reached Lucas, they exchanged smiles and held hands. The priest solemnly opened the Bible and started reciting the sacred vows.
I watched as Skylar happily skipped back to my side. I gently patted her head, my mind wandering back to my own wedding day. The sun was just as bright then, but I was way more nervous than Lila. After all, my ex-husband was Edward.
Back then, our love was pure and intense, but my marriage eventually fell apart. Luckily, fate blessed me with Skylar. I was there for her as she grew up, witnessing every important moment in her life and giving her all the love she deserved.
"David, this is really touching," Fiona's voice snapped me back to the present. She was gently holding David's arm, speaking softly.
David tenderly placed a hand on her slightly rounded belly and nodded. "Yeah, I'm so glad we made it to this wedding."
When they got the invite to Lucas and Lila's wedding, they didn't think twice about dropping everything and coming back from Ignis.
At that moment, Fiona tugged on Skylar's little hand and said, "Time flies. Skylar's grown so much, and now she's a flower girl."
Hearing this, Skylar shyly hid in my arms.
The priest's voice echoed through the church, "Now, the groom may kiss the bride."
Then Lucas gently cupped Lila's face and kissed her deeply amidst the cheers and applause. The church was buzzing, and we all stood up, clapping and cheering for the newlyweds.
After the ceremony, everyone moved to the outdoor garden for the reception. The garden was decked out with flowers and colorful balloons swaying in the breeze.
Kids' laughter and adults' chatter mixed together, and everyone was soaking in the happiness and joy.
Lucas and Lila mingled with the guests, toasting and sharing their joy.
Fiona sat under a parasol, watching the lively scene with a heart full of warmth. David thoughtfully brought her a glass of juice and asked softly, "Are you tired? Do you want to rest for a bit?"
Fiona smiled and shook her head. "No, I'm not tired. This is such a happy occasion, and I want to take it all in."
At that time, I was playing with Skylar on the grass, and a clown selling balloons nearby caught her attention.Skylar pointed eagerly at the balloons, her sweet voice calling out, "Mommy, I want a balloon."
I couldn't help but smile as I nodded and carried her towards the clown. As we got closer, the clown's goofy outfit came into focus. When we reached him, the clown looked up, and for a moment, the world seemed to freeze.
The clown was Edward! Despite the heavy makeup, I could recognize those eyes anywhere.
Seeing me, Edward stood there, stunned, just as shocked as I was by this unexpected reunion. After a brief moment of surprise, his eyes softened with a deep tenderness. Skylar, oblivious to the tension between us, excitedly pointed at the balloons and said, "Hi, I want that balloon."
Hearing this, Edward snapped out of his daze, quickly picking out a bright red balloon and handing it to Skylar, his voice trembling with emotion. "Here you go, little one."
Holding Skylar, I was speechless, my throat tight with unspoken emotions.
Edward looked at me, his lips parting slightly as he softly said, "Diana, it's been a long time."
My eyes instantly welled up, and I struggled to keep my emotions in check as I replied, "Yeah, it's been a while. Why are you here, dressed as a clown and selling balloons?"
Edward's smile wavered, a trace of embarrassment flickering across his face as he responded with a wry grin, "I had to find a way to make ends meet. This job isn't glamorous, but it puts food on the table."
Skylar clutched the balloon string tightly, her little body wriggling in my arms. She alternated between staring at the balloon and curiously studying Edward with her big eyes.
Edward looked at the lively Skylar, a gentle expression in his eyes. After a moment's hesitation, he reached out and gently patted her head. Skylar didn't shy away; instead, she laughed even more joyfully.
Watching this scene, I felt a whirlwind of emotions. Taking a deep breath, I tried to steady myself and said, "Thank you for the balloon, Edward."
A flicker of sadness crossed Edward's eyes, but he forced a smile and nodded. "Skylar is a lovely name," he said.
Meanwhile, guests began to spill out of the church. Lila and Lucas, hand in hand, basked in the congratulations of their friends and family.
I glanced back at the crowd, then turned to Edward and said softly, "I have to go back. I wish you all the best."
Edward's mouth opened slightly, and it took him a moment to find his voice. "Diana, I'm really sorry I couldn't give you and Skylar a better life. Seeing you both doing well now, I feel at peace."
As I turned to leave, the sunlight cast a lonely silhouette around Edward. The square was still bustling with laughter and chatter, but he seemed isolated from the joy.
Holding Skylar, I blended back into the crowd. I couldn't help but glance back, seeing Edward still standing there, his silhouette elongated by the sun. Taking a deep breath, I hugged Skylar tighter, feeling tears welling up in my eyes.
"Mommy, don't cry." Skylar reached out to wipe away my tears.
"Sweetie, I'm not crying. The wind just blew some dust into my eyes." I kissed Skylar's cheek and quickened my pace.
