Chapter 388 Joining Forces with David
"What the heck is going on?" I asked, totally confused.
Edward gave me a bitter smile and spoke slowly. "Fiona thinks you stole David from her, so she's got this huge grudge against you. She's trying to get back at you by going after me. Even though she knows you don't have feelings for me anymore, she still thinks this will hurt you emotionally and let her vent her anger."
As I listened, my mind went blank, and time seemed to freeze. All the sounds around me faded away, leaving only Edward's words, sharp as knives, echoing in my mind.
I gasped in disbelief. "How could this be? I knew she had feelings for you, but I never imagined she'd use her emotions like this! How could she come up with such a ridiculous idea?" I muttered to myself, barely audible.
Images of Fiona's usual demeanor flashed through my mind: those cold or provocative glances now seemed to have a chillingly reasonable explanation.
I had always thought she was just eccentric, but I never realized she harbored such twisted thoughts—those terrifying revenge plans born from jealousy and hatred.
But then Edward's next words hit me even harder.
"That's not all. Her ambitions go far beyond that. You need to warn David that Fiona has teamed up with Nicholas, aiming to destroy the Wilson Group completely. The Wilson Group is the result of years of hard work by the Wilson family. If they succeed, David will be the next me." Edward's voice grew heavier.
I couldn't believe Fiona would go to such lengths for petty revenge, even joining forces with Nicholas to strike at the Wilson Group.
"This is unbelievable. Fiona is truly terrifying." My voice trembled slightly.
"The Wilson family has already compensated Nicholas and the Griffin family generously. How can they be so reckless?" I felt indignant for David.
A sudden doubt crossed my mind, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Wait, don't you think Anne's actions are strange? If Fiona is using you and Nicholas to take down the Wilson family, why is Anne targeting you?" I voiced my doubts to Edward, who furrowed his brows and fell into deep thought.
After a moment, he spoke slowly, "Maybe Anne really doesn't know about Fiona and Nicholas's plan. She's always been short-sighted, only seeing immediate benefits. It's not surprising she wants me to hand over resources to her for her own expansion. Her targeting me this time is probably just a simple attempt to gain advantages, without considering the long-term consequences."
I sighed helplessly. "Anne is only focused on immediate gains. She'll end up dragging herself into the mud. If Fiona and Nicholas's plan succeeds, the entire business landscape will be turned upside down, and Nicholas will likely reclaim all of Anne's assets."
At this point, I was worried Edward might still be sentimental about his so-called family ties with Anne, so I couldn't help but ask, "What do you plan to do about Anne?"
Edward hesitated, his face full of uncertainty. He replied, "This is all so sudden. I haven't really thought about it yet."
I watched Edward's conflicted expression, my mind racing. After some thought, I had a preliminary plan.
I stirred my coffee with a spoon, not looking up as I spoke. "The situation is urgent. I think you should consider teaming up with David to face this crisis together."
Edward looked surprised and instinctively objected. "Work with David? Can that even work? We've had so many disagreements before. Can he really cooperate with me?"
"You've definitely had your conflicts before," I interrupted. "But this is an extraordinary time. Anne is targeting you, and Fiona and Nicholas are plotting to take down the Wilson Group. If the Wilson Group falls, Fiona's power will only grow, and you're just a startup. What chance do you have against them? Besides, Fiona only sees you as a pawn."
I took a sip of coffee, the bitterness spreading on my tongue, making my mind clearer.
I continued, "Although David is your competitor, you both share the same goal in opposing Fiona and Nicholas. You and David are both smart enough to understand that in the face of Fiona and Nicholas's enormous threat, only by setting aside past grievances can you have a chance. Whether he's willing to cooperate, you have to try to find out."
Edward hesitated and spoke softly. "That's true, but thinking about our past relationship makes me uncertain. If the cooperation fails, we'll offend Fiona, and how will we survive in the business world?"
He then fell silent, staring blankly at his cup.
I didn't expect Edward to become so timid now. I began to wonder if I was meddling too much. But then I thought, Fiona's ultimate goal in controlling Edward and targeting David was me. How could I sit back and do nothing?
I decided to try a different angle to persuade Edward.
I said, "Anne wants you to hand over your resources to her. You've seen her attitude. If you and David team up and combine your strengths, it will make Anne more cautious and less impulsive. It might even indirectly throw a wrench in Nicholas and Fiona's plans."
Edward furrowed his brows, deep in thought. After a long while, he said, "Working with David sounds easy, but implementing it will involve many details, like profit distribution, cooperation methods, and resolving past conflicts."
I nodded slightly, understanding his concerns, and continued. "As long as you're willing, the urgent task is to establish a cooperation framework and unite against external threats. Once the immediate crisis is over, you can slowly address internal issues."
Edward's eyes darted briefly, as if he was weighing the pros and cons. After a while, he looked up and met my gaze.
"Diana, you're right. I'll give it a try," he said.
I felt a surge of joy, finally convincing him.
I said, "I'll contact David and arrange a meeting for you two to discuss. This might avoid the awkwardness of a direct encounter and lay the groundwork for formal negotiations."
Edward looked at me with trust in his eyes and nodded. "Thank you. I hope this cooperation can turn the tide."
