Chapter 315 The Mastermind Lanny
Despite my best efforts, my eyes couldn't help but wander around the apartment.
To my surprise, the decor was almost identical to what David and I had chosen for our place. Was this just a coincidence, or did Fiona know something? A flood of questions swirled in my mind.
Fiona's gentle voice floated out from the study. "Is my guest here?"
The housekeeper quickly stepped aside and gestured for me to enter. "Ms. Cooper, please, David and Fiona are waiting for you in the study."
Taking a deep breath, I walked steadily into the study.
The room was elegantly furnished, with bookshelves filled with various books and a large desk in the center. Fiona was sitting by the desk.
She wore a loose, soft maternity dress, her belly slightly rounded, and her face radiated the unique warmth and happiness of an expectant mother.
David saw me walk in, smiled politely, and quickly moved to Fiona's side, gently supporting her arm as if he were afraid of causing her even the slightest discomfort.
With David's help, Fiona stood up slightly and smiled.
She said, "Diana, please have a seat."
Seeing this scene, I was overwhelmed by a wave of mixed emotions. I used to share so many tender moments with David, but now all his attention was focused on Fiona.
I had just sat down and hadn't had a chance to speak when Fiona confidently said, "Diana, I knew you would come to me."
I was slightly taken aback, paused for a moment, then quickly adjusted my emotions and said urgently, "Fiona, I'm really at my wit's end this time. I had no choice but to come to you for help."
A flicker of sympathy crossed Fiona's eyes, followed by a tight furrow of her brows and a troubled expression. She bit her lip gently, remained silent for a moment, then slowly spoke. "Diana, I heard about your company's goods being held up at customs. I'm worried for you too."
I was surprised at how quickly Fiona had learned about it.
She continued, "This time, customs is being particularly strict. The interests involved are complex, and Lanny is behind the trouble. He won't give up easily."
"What? Lanny? He's the one causing trouble? But why would he do that?" I looked at David in shock, unable to believe what I was hearing.
David shook his head helplessly and said, "Lanny has always wanted to prove himself in the family, so he's trying to undermine your company to showcase his abilities. He's done some sneaky things before, but you didn't notice."
I clenched my fists in anger and said through gritted teeth, "That Lanny, he's gone too far!"
Fiona continued, "Don't worry. Now that we know who's behind it, we can find a way to solve it. We've known each other for a long time; we won't let you struggle alone. David and I will do everything we can, using all available resources, to get customs to re-examine the situation and clear your company's name." She turned to David. "Right?"
David nodded firmly.Fiona thought for a moment and added, "I'll reach out to an old classmate of mine who works in customs. He's got the inside scoop and might be able to dig up evidence of Lanny's manipulation or find the real reason for the hold-up. That way, we can tackle the issue head-on." She then turned to David, "David, you should talk to the influential elders in the family and get their support to put pressure on customs. With a two-pronged approach, we'll find a way through this."
David listened to Fiona's plan and said thoughtfully, "This is ultimately the Wilson family's responsibility. I think the elders will be willing to help for the sake of the family's reputation."
I felt a warmth in my heart and quickly said, "Thank you so much. If we can resolve this crisis, I'll be forever in your debt."
Fiona smiled and waved her hand. "Don't thank us yet; we haven't solved anything."
As we were discussing, Fiona's phone rang. She answered it, and her face immediately turned serious. After hanging up, she said nervously, "Bad news. Lanny seems to have caught wind of our involvement. He's already trying to obstruct us and is even planning to use some family elders to pressure us."
My heart sank, and I immediately thought of the worsening situation my company might face: extended hold-ups, increased risk of a broken cash flow, lost clients, and more. I glanced at Fiona and David, desperation etched on my face, and asked, "What should we do? Is there really no way to stop him?"
David's face darkened, and he clenched his fists, his voice filled with anger and disappointment. "That Lanny, he's gone too far! For his own selfish desires, he's disregarded basic decency. It's one thing to fight with me, but now he's doing something that harms the family's reputation and hurts innocent people. I'm utterly disappointed in him!"
Fiona took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. She gently held David's clenched fist and softly reassured him, "David, calm down. He's doing this to provoke us. The more he tries to anger us, the more we need to stay composed. We need to act quickly. I'll contact my classmate right away to see if we can find the key to solving this before Lanny does. You should visit the family elders now. No matter how Lanny tries to obstruct us, we need their support."
David nodded, stood up, and said, "Alright, I'll get on it." He added, "Diana, you should go back and wait for updates. Stay in touch if anything new comes up."
I remarked, "I can't thank you enough. From the moment you agreed to help, I felt a sense of hope. You've thought of everything; I'm at a loss for words to express my gratitude."
David scratched his head, a bit embarrassed, and said, "Don't be so formal. We're friends; helping you is the right thing to do. Besides, helping you is also helping ourselves. Diana, go back and wait for the news. We'll do our best."
Fiona nodded slightly. "Yes, this is just a temporary setback. We'll get through it."
With that, David stood up and walked me to the study door.
To save my company, I had no choice but to seek help from Fiona and David.
I couldn't help but lament how the Cooper Group had become a casualty of Lanny and David's family feud. With Skylar still missing and this new crisis, was this a test from above?
Leaving David's house, I returned to my company, feeling numb, and waited for the latest developments.
