Chapter 220 The Best Destination
Seeing Lanny's twisted face made my blood boil. "How dare you compare yourself to the child David and I might have?" I snapped. "David and I truly love each other. If we have a kid, we'll be a happy family."
I gripped the hem of my shirt, memories of David flooding my mind, giving me the strength to stand my ground.
Lanny just nodded, leaning back in his chair, crossing his legs, one hand on the armrest, the other tapping the table.
"David's always loved you," he said. "If I remember right, it's been over ten years. But you ended up with Edward. You think the Wilson family doesn't know?"
He leaned in closer. "We should thank Edward for taking you in, so David wouldn't have to end up with someone like you."
His words cut deep, making my heart ache and my body tremble.
"But who would've thought Edward was just playing with you?" Lanny went on. "Now that he's ditched you, you want to run back to David? Even if the Wilson family had to marry David off to someone from Ignis, we wouldn't let him be with you."
I couldn't believe this was how the Wilson family felt. I took a step forward. "Did David really go to Ignis to get married?"
Lanny ignored me, turning to Anne. "Did you tell her about David?"
Anne nodded, a smug look in her eyes. "She doesn't believe it," she said, giving me a sinister smile that sent chills down my spine.
Lanny walked over, arms crossed. "We've told her, so our job's done."
He put on a fake respectful face, bent slightly, and grabbed my arm. "Diana, you should go back to Edward."
His hypocrisy made me sick.
"Look at your life with David now. If you go back to Edward, at least you'll have a good life, even if he's got a bad temper..." Lanny's lewd laugh made my stomach turn.
I shook off his hand and stepped back.
Lanny smirked, then stepped forward, his hand crossing over my shoulder to rest on my chest.
"How about we have some fun?" he said. "I don't think David or Edward would mind."
Terror surged through me. I struggled to break free, cursing him for his shamelessness. I just wanted to get out of there. But before I could move, a loud noise came from the door. I turned to see Edward kicking open the tavern door.
Anne screamed, "Edward! What are you doing here?"
But Edward ignored her. His eyes were ice-cold, locked onto Lanny. Without a second thought, he charged at him.
Lanny's face flashed with panic, but he tried to fight back, swinging a right hook at Edward's jaw. Edward dodged it easily, grabbed Lanny's wrist, and twisted it hard, making Lanny's face contort in pain and he scream.
Edward countered swiftly, blocking Lanny's next move with his left hand and twisting Lanny's wrist behind his back with his right. Lanny's forehead veins bulged, and he screamed in agony.
I was stunned. How did Edward end up here?
Maybe he had been listening outside, waiting for the right moment to step in when Lanny crossed the line. By now, the bartender had long since hidden in fear.
As Edward pinned Lanny to the ground, Anne stepped forward to plead, but Edward didn't give her a chance.
"Go home," Edward said coldly to Anne.
Anne reluctantly glanced at the wailing Lanny but had no choice but to leave.
I tried to slip out behind her, but Edward stopped me. "Diana, wait."
I froze, not daring to look back.
Edward kicked Lanny's back twice more, growling, "Get out." His voice was low but full of fury.
Lanny scrambled to his feet and fled the tavern.
As he ran, Edward added, "And stay away from Anne."
Suddenly, it was just me and Edward in the tavern. I stood there, tense and unsure, not daring to move or look back.
Edward walked over, his hands on my shoulders, his eyes scanning me. Once he was sure I was okay, he let out a long breath, his tone a mix of anger and concern. "Diana, why were you with him?"
I nodded slightly, trying to stay calm. "Anne asked me to meet him."
Edward flinched at Anne's name, disbelief twisting his face. "How is that possible? Anne's always been so obedient and gentle. How could she be involved with someone like him?"
His protective feelings for Anne were clear.
Anger flared up inside me, and I raised my voice. "Why are they together? You should ask Anne."
Sensing my anger, Edward suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace. Still shaken from the fight, I was startled and tried to pull away.
But the more I struggled, the tighter Edward held me, as if he wanted to keep me safe in his arms.
He lowered his head, his warm breath brushing my ear, speaking gently but firmly. "Diana, as much as Lanny is a jerk, he was right about one thing. Being with me is your best choice."
