Chapter 248 You Are Still the Best

I really hoped Lila or Theo would come to pick me up from the hospital, but since this was a hospital under the Howard Group, no one could get in without Edward's say-so.

On the day I was discharged, the sun was shining, but I still felt down. Edward showed up early to help me pack. He reached out to help me, but I sped up and walked ahead of him to the car parked at the entrance.

It was the same business car he had gotten for our private moments, but we didn't say a word on the way, my handbag sitting between us like a wall.

The car finally stopped in front of a brand-new apartment, the area was so quiet.

Edward got out first and came around to open my door.

I looked around, confused, and couldn't help but ask, "Where are we? I've never been here before."

Edward glanced around too, then turned to me and said softly, "Diana, too much has happened at the old villa. It's not a good place anymore. I don't want you to be reminded of those memories and feel sad. Let's start fresh here."

I started to take in the house. "This apartment is right between Stellar Legal Advisors and the Cooper Group, so it'll be easier for you to get to work. Plus, it's quiet around here, so you can relax."

There was a hopeful look in Edward's eyes, like he wanted me to appreciate his thoughtfulness.

Hearing that he sold the Howard Villa made my heart tighten. I bit my lip and asked, "What about Melissa? Where did she go?"

Edward's body tensed up, and his eyes flickered for a second, but it was so quick I almost missed it. He quickly composed himself and said as naturally as he could, "Melissa had some family stuff to deal with, so she went back home."

I stared into his eyes, trying to catch a lie. In the past, Edward never avoided my gaze when talking to me, but now, I noticed he was.

I forced myself to push down my doubts and didn't ask more, just nodding slightly and softly replying, "Okay."

Then I followed him into the apartment.

As the door opened, a warm and elegant atmosphere greeted me. I looked around, a bit surprised: the decor was exactly my style.

The living room was done in my favorite warm beige, with light wood floors, cozy yet stylish. Even the furniture was arranged just how I liked it.

The whole place felt like a bigger version of my old apartment.

Edward followed behind me, smiling, and started to explain, "The windows here are all floor-to-ceiling, so there's great lighting. You can read and sunbathe here."

He patted the comfy sofa by the window as he spoke. "The study has all the office supplies you might need. If anything's missing, just ask Albert to get it for you."

But I didn't seem to hear him and walked straight to the bedroom.

What caught my eyes in the bedroom was the wardrobe that took up an entire wall. The doors had that warm white matte finish I had always wanted, with a delicate and smooth touch. When I opened it, the inside was spacious and well-organized. One side was filled with my favorite clothes, all from top designers, including limited edition dresses and custom-made suits, neatly arranged by occasion and season.

The other side had various drawers, holding valuable accessories, from diamond-studded necklaces to limited edition branded watches, to luxurious scarves with hand-embroidered gold and silver threads. Each item was a treasure, exuding luxury and uniqueness. I stood in front of the wardrobe, my eyes empty as I touched the door, my thoughts drifting.

Edward stood at the door for a long time before breaking the silence, "Diana, I know I messed up a lot in the past and hurt you. But I really want to make it up to you, to make sure you and the baby are comfortable and safe."

I looked at the items in the wardrobe and tried to keep my voice steady as I said, "You don't need to go to such lengths. It doesn't matter to me where I live."

Edward's pupils contracted sharply, then he slowly walked into the bedroom, placing his hands on my shoulders and turning me to face him.

Edward's Adam's apple bobbed as he slowly reached into the inner pocket of his suit and took out a slightly worn but still exquisite velvet box. With trembling hands, he opened the box, revealing a ring lying quietly inside.

It was the ring we wore when we got married.

For a moment, I was stunned.

When he got engaged to Aria, he had placed this ring on her finger himself. I didn't expect that after Aria's death, he would still keep it.

"Diana," Edward's voice choked slightly, "After all this time, I realized that you are the best. This ring has been with us for four years. It's like an invisible thread, bringing me back to you. I was confused before, but now I understand that only where you and the baby are is home. You are my true destination. I want all the past mistakes to be the foundation for our future together. Will you marry me again?"

As he spoke, he knelt on one knee and held the ring up to me.

I stared at the ring, memories flooding back, both sweet and bitter moments swirling in my mind. But now, the chasm between Edward and me was too wide and deep to be bridged by a ring or a confession.

I took a deep breath and slowly shook my head, "Edward, the past is the past. Some wounds can't be erased. I can't agree to this right now."

Edward looked up at me in shock, then slowly stood up, gently closing the velvet box. The light in his eyes dimmed as the box closed. "I understand. Get some rest."

Edward said softly, then turned and left the room, leaving me standing alone in the bedroom.

That night, I lay in bed, unable to sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, Edward's disappointed face appeared before me.

I pulled the blanket over my head, trying to block out these troubling thoughts, but Edward's disappointed expression stubbornly replayed in my mind, refusing to fade.

I didn't know how long it was before I heard a very faint sound in the darkness. The door slowly opened, and a weak light seeped through the crack, only to be swallowed by the darkness again.
