Chapter 408 Unity Will Surely Win

I quickly caught up with Edward and Skylar.

Skylar's eyes lit up the moment she saw me. She waved her little hand excitedly, her clear, childish voice ringing out, "Mommy, come on, join us!"

Skylar's innocent smile was like the sunshine of spring, instantly lifting the lingering gloom in my heart.

Edward also stopped and turned to look at me. His eyes first showed a hint of surprise, then filled with joy, and a gentle smile curved his lips.

I walked up to them and, in perfect sync with Edward, took Skylar's little hands on either side.

Skylar, this mischievous little sprite, immediately became lively. She lifted her feet off the ground, relaxing completely, letting us lift her into the air.

Her legs swung back and forth, and her clear, small voice echoed in my ears.

"So fun, so fun," Skylar shouted excitedly.

Seeing my happy child, my heart felt comforted.

The hardships of raising a child alone were something only I could understand. Yet, at this moment, Edward and I, without needing words, moved in perfect harmony, effortlessly supporting Skylar's weight and playing with her.

Skylar's laughter drew the attention of passersby, who looked at us with envy.

For that moment, we seemed like a family who had been together for years, understanding each other perfectly.

The first event was a parent-child relay race. Edward flashed a confident smile and encouraged, "Skylar, we need to run as fast as the wind, okay?"

Skylar nodded vigorously, clenching her little fists, full of determination.

Edward stood at the starting line, his posture slightly leaning forward, looking quite professional.

As the starting gun fired, Edward shot forward.

However, after just a few steps, his dress shoes caused him to stumble. His once-straight suit flapped awkwardly with his unsteady movements, making him look quite comical. He hadn't gone far before his body showed signs of fatigue, his steps growing heavy and his breathing labored.

Skylar, waiting for the baton, shouted encouragement loudly.

Hearing our cheers, a look of determination flashed in Edward's eyes, and he quickened his pace.

But ultimately, his attire hindered him, and he was left far behind by the other parents. Watching Edward's somewhat clumsy yet earnest effort, I found it hard to believe.

In the past, no matter how busy Edward was with work, he always kept up with his fitness. A run like this should have been nothing for him. I couldn't believe how quickly his stamina had declined.

Just then, Skylar anxiously tugged at my clothes, looking up at me with her big eyes. "Mommy, Mr. Howard looks so tired. Let's cheer him on together, okay?"

I snapped out of my thoughts and quickly joined Skylar in shouting, "Mr. Howard, you can do it! Mr. Howard, run faster!"

Hearing our cheers, Edward seemed to find new strength, quickening his pace and successfully passing the baton to Skylar.

Skylar, holding the baton, dashed off like a joyful little deer.

Despite her best efforts, we still finished behind the other families, losing the race.

Edward was panting heavily, sweat soaking his forehead, his hair sticking to it messily.

He turned to me, a bit embarrassed, and said, "This outfit really messed me up today. I'm sorry I let you and Skylar down."

I couldn't help but smile, reassuring him, "You did your best. Skylar saw that."

Next was the parent-child tug-of-war. Gripping the thick rope, I felt a twinge of nervousness.

Edward seemed to sense my anxiety. He moved closer and whispered, "Diana, don't worry. We'll pull together, and we'll be fine."

I nodded slightly, looking at Skylar beside me. She was staring intently at the rope, muttering, "Mommy, our teacher said if we work together, we can win!"

As the match began, Edward shouted, "One, two, pull!"

His voice, hoarse from exertion, was full of encouraging strength.

Skylar and I followed his rhythm, our feet firmly planted, our bodies leaning back with all our might.

I stumbled forward, but Edward quickly reached out, grabbing my arm to steady me. His hand was warm and strong, and in that moment, a different feeling surged in my heart.

With our combined efforts, the rope gradually moved in our direction, and we won the match.

Skylar jumped up and down excitedly, holding one of my hands and one of Edward's, cheering, "Mommy, we won! We won!"

Edward and I exchanged smiles, and in that smile, all the past misunderstandings and distance between us melted away.

Edward's smile was filled with the joy of our shared effort, and in his smile, I felt a long-lost sense of harmony and closeness.

Skylar hugged the first-place prize, excitedly opening her arms to me, shouting, "Mommy, hug!"

Before I could move, Edward stepped forward, a doting smile on his face. "Diana, I've got the strength. Let me carry Skylar."

He crouched down gently, extending his arms to Skylar. "Skylar, come here. I'll carry you. You were amazing today!"

Skylar's eyes sparkled as she leaped into Edward's arms, one hand clutching the prize, the other wrapping around Edward's neck.

Edward stood up steadily, holding Skylar securely. Perhaps feeling a bit emotional, his voice trembled slightly. "Our Skylar is the best, holding the prize so proudly!"

Skylar giggled, waving the prize in front of Edward's face, exclaiming, "Mr. Howard, look, we won this together!"

Edward nodded repeatedly, agreeing, "Yes, this is the result of our teamwork."

For the three-legged race, the staff tied my leg to Edward's with a rope. At first, we almost fell due to our mismatched steps.

Skylar, anxious, stomped her feet and shouted, "Mommy, Mr. Howard, you have to walk together!"

Edward quickly supported me. "Diana, let's try again. When I step with my left foot, you step with your right. We'll follow Skylar's lead."

I nodded in agreement, determination in my eyes.

Skylar had a sudden idea and shouted, "Mommy, Mr. Howard, I'll sing a song for you. Follow my rhythm!"

She began to hum a cheerful tune. Edward and I listened to Skylar's song, trying our best to match our steps.
