Chapter 337 The Only Choice

Even though I felt totally wronged, I stood tall. No way I was gonna show any weakness right now.

With heavy steps, I left the hospital room. The hallway stank of disinfectant, and the occasional cries of babies from other rooms kept messing with my thoughts.

As I got to the corner, I bumped into David, who was rushing over.

He looked surprised to see me.

"Diana, what are you doing here?" David's voice was full of concern.

"You don't look well," he said.

I forced a weak smile and replied, "Fiona and Mrs. Griffin think there's something shady going on between us. How could I be happy? Now they're blaming me for Fiona's miscarriage without even giving me a chance to explain."

David's brows furrowed deeply. He lowered his head and said in a somber tone, "I'm sorry, Diana. I messed up, and now you're suffering because of it. I'll help clear things up."

I shook my head slightly. "Given your position in the family, what can you do? I'll handle my own issues. You don't need to trouble yourself."

David paused, then earnestly said, "I know you're capable, Diana. But I don't want you to struggle so much. Even if I can help with some small things, at least it might ease your burden a bit."

"Enough, David! I appreciate your kindness, but there are some things I need to face on my own. Whether it's business competition or personal misunderstandings, I don't want to rely on others to resolve them. I can handle it, and I'm confident I can clear up the misunderstanding between Fiona and me." I was eager to end the discussion with David on this topic.

Just then, Harper's sharp voice came from behind us. "You two really are quite the pair, aren't you? How touching."

Hearing Harper's cutting words, I took a deep breath and slowly turned around.

David stood beside me, his body slightly tense. I could sense his discomfort within this family. Maybe he had indeed faced many grievances dealing with Fiona and the Griffin family.

With a polite yet distant smile, I met Harper's hostile gaze and spoke calmly. "Mrs. Griffin, I think you misunderstand. David is your son-in-law, and I respect that. As I said earlier, I came here today simply out of concern for Fiona, with no other intentions."

Harper scoffed, her face full of disdain. "Concern? Who knows if you're really concerned or just here to mock Fiona. I've seen plenty of women like you. You're a competitor to our family and a rival to Fiona. But let me tell you, you won't gain an inch from the Griffin family."

I struggled to keep my composure and patiently explained. "Mrs. Griffin, I admit there is some competition between my company and the Griffin Group, but I have always adhered to business ethics and would never use underhanded methods to gain an advantage. I will take responsibility for what happened and do my best to make amends for the harm Fiona has suffered."David couldn't help but jump in. "Diana's telling the truth. There's nothing between us. I only helped her negotiate with Lanny because her goods were seized. I was just trying to minimize losses for both sides. I had no intention of targeting the Griffin family or doing anything to hurt Fiona."

Harper glared at David. "This is none of your business."

David pressed his lips together, a hint of embarrassment flashing across his face. As the Griffin family's son-in-law, he didn't even have the right to speak up for himself under their authority. This grievance was something only he could silently endure.

I looked at David sympathetically, then turned back to Harper, my tone softening slightly. "Mrs. Griffin, I'm deeply sorry for what happened. I understand your anger and blame toward me because Fiona was hurt. But please believe me. I will prove my innocence through my actions. No matter what difficulties I face, I will resolve them and give you and Fiona an explanation."

With that, I gave a slight nod and turned to leave. I knew tackling this crisis alone would be tough, but it was my only choice at this point.

As I exited the hospital building, I felt a sense of solemnity. Unexpectedly, I ran into Edward at the entrance. He was carrying a simple bag, looking frail.

Edward noticed me immediately and asked with concern, "Diana, what are you doing here? You don't look well."

I forced a smile, not wanting him to worry. "I'm fine, don't worry about me. Are you being discharged? Is your health okay now?"

Edward looked down, a bit embarrassed. "I couldn't come up with the money for the medical bills, so I have to leave and recover at home."

Hearing this, I felt a pang in my heart and quickly said, "If you need help, I can cover some of the medical expenses. After all..." I paused, then continued, "You're Skylar's father."

To my surprise, Edward shook his head firmly, stubbornly saying, "No, I can't. After losing Skylar and causing you so much trouble, I already feel terrible. I can't trouble you again."

I sighed and gently waved my hand. "It's all in the past. I won't hold anyone responsible anymore. I've also arranged for Anne's bail, so she won't have to go to jail this time."

Edward's eyes widened in disbelief, his voice trembling. "Diana, is that true? Thank you for still caring about us."

I smiled and patted his shoulder. "You don't need to feel any burden. I'm doing this for Skylar. So, what are your plans now?"

Edward took a deep breath, looking out at the bustling street. "I'm planning to find a job and save up some money."

Then, as if remembering something, Edward asked curiously, "Diana, why are you at the hospital?"

I didn't want to tell him about the dispute that brought me here, so I smiled and deflected. "I came to see a friend. She was upset, and I guess it affected me too."

Edward scrutinized me, then suddenly said, "Diana, you really don't look well. You seem exhausted. You need to rest."

Just then, my phone rang urgently. I took it out and saw it was Amy calling. A sense of foreboding washed over me.
