Chapter 182 Beg for Mercy

The argument between Anne and Clara was getting out of hand, their voices climbing higher and higher, turning the ward into a madhouse with all the yelling and crying. The noise was so loud that even the nurses outside took notice. One of them stormed into the room, her face all scrunched up, and yelled, "This is a hospital, not a fight club! If you want to brawl, take it outside and let the patients rest!" Her voice was sharp and commanding. After that, she spun around and stomped out, still fuming.

The nurse's outburst shut everyone up instantly, leaving just the sound of heavy breathing. Hayden's face was red with anger, his eyes blazing as he shouted at Anne and Clara, "Get out now!"

Clara flinched at Hayden's roar, her face going blank for a second, fear and reluctance flashing in her eyes. But then, a look of determination crossed her face. She took a deep breath, her muscles tensing, and slowly moved towards Hayden's wheelchair.

She grabbed one of Hayden's hands, her knuckles white from the grip, sweat dripping down her face. Her eyes were full of tears as she pleaded, "Hayden, I've taken care of you for years, working day and night to make you comfortable. I had no idea about what Anne did. I'm a victim too!"

I watched quietly from the side, shocked by what was happening.

Hayden's face was dark with anger. He yanked his hand away and glared at Clara, "Stop making excuses! Anne's behavior is your fault for always indulging her. Do you think I don't know what you've been up to? It's your coddling that led her astray."

Clara's body went rigid, tears streaming down her face. She quickly said, "I love Anne, but I also taught her the rules. As she got older, she became more willful, and I couldn't control her anymore. If I'm not here to take care of you, how will you manage? I just want to stay and serve the Howard family. Please, for the sake of our past, kick Anne out of the family. Let me stay and take care of you like I always have. I'm begging you."

But Hayden just snorted, "You're trying to dodge responsibility! Do you think you can fool me that easily? If you had done your job as a mother, she wouldn't be so reckless. And now you want to clear your name?"

Seeing things getting worse, Clara moved closer to Hayden and begged, "I know I was wrong. I'll make up for it if you forgive me this time. I've worked hard for the Howard family for years; you can't just throw me out like this."

Hayden was quiet for a bit before he finally said, "If you really want a shot, beg Diana for her forgiveness. If she forgives you, maybe I'll think about letting you stay with the Howard family. Otherwise, take Anne and get out for good. No more illusions."

Clara hesitated, gritting her teeth, but eventually agreed, "I'll go beg Diana now."

I was just trying to be a bystander in this whole mess, but somehow, I got dragged into it. I felt torn. Part of me was curious if Clara would actually swallow her pride and beg me. But deep down, I hoped she wouldn't, because I had no intention of forgiving her.

Sure enough, Clara really shuffled over to my bedside, her face desperate. She said, "Diana, please forgive me this time. From now on, I'll serve you like a servant, take care of your life, and help you with the kids."

Seeing this, Anne followed suit, crying and pleading, "Diana, please forgive me this time. I swear, I'll never hurt you again. If anyone tries to bully you, I'll be the first to protect you, even if it means taking a bullet." Anne's hair was a mess, her white T-shirt stained with dirt, looking utterly disheveled.

I was beyond annoyed with Anne and Clara, having no intention of forgiving them.

I frowned, my face full of anger, and said, "Anne, do you think I'm as foolish and soft-hearted as before? The pain you caused me isn't just physical; the real wound is here."

I poked my chest with my finger, my voice choked with emotion. "You and Clara—one of you tried to poison me to prevent pregnancy, and the other schemed to have Edward kill my child once I got pregnant. Why should I forgive you? Just because you're making empty promises? That's enough. Now, get out of my room. I need to rest."

Hayden chimed in, "Diana needs to rest; you better leave now, or I'll get angry."

I looked at Hayden, my tone softening a bit. "Mr. Howard, it's late. You should go home and rest, too."

Anne looked like she wanted to argue, her lips trembling, but before she could speak, Clara quietly tugged her sleeve. Clara quickly grabbed the handles of Hayden's wheelchair, and pushed him out of the ward. Anne was momentarily stunned but quickly followed.

Hayden sat in the wheelchair, swaying slightly with the movement, and turned his head, his face livid, saying, "We'll settle this at home!"

Suddenly, it all felt like a ridiculous joke. Hayden seemed to bring Clara and Anne to apologize to me, but on closer inspection, the whole thing felt like a carefully orchestrated plot to gain sympathy. I couldn't figure out the complex thoughts and motives behind this. They might not be truly remorseful; they could just be forced by some circumstance to make such a gesture.
