Chapter 49 Go Home First
As soon as those words left his mouth, the guests started buzzing. Zara's eyes went wide, her perfectly painted red lips parting like she wanted to say something but couldn't figure out where to start. She almost dropped her wine glass.
The girl next to Zara frowned, curiosity all over her face, and whispered, "Seriously? Diana's cute and all, but she's nothing special. Why her?"
Another girl leaned in closer. "I heard Diana was the one who chased after Mr. Howard."
They giggled, their voices dripping with judgment. "So she managed to snag him after all."
But Zara didn't laugh this time. Her eyes darted between Edward and I, a mix of jealousy and frustration creeping in. She knew her earlier attempt to cozy up to Edward had already ticked off David. She sneaked a glance at David, only to see his face dark and stormy. Zara's mind was racing, trying to figure out how to make it up to him.
"Mrs. Howard, I'm going to need you to take care of me tonight," Edward whispered in my ear.
My heart was pounding amidst the chatter, and I couldn't help but look at David.
David's mouth twitched, then he suddenly raised his wine glass and smashed it at my feet. The sound of shattering glass silenced the room, and no one dared to make a sound.
"Diana, now that you have him, can you just ignore everything?" David's voice was filled with anger and resentment, cutting through the sudden quiet of the club. Zara rushed to his side, gently patting his back to calm him down.
"Mr. Wilson, why get mad over her? You still have me." David's chest was heaving, and he didn't seem to hear Zara, his eyes locked on me.
I supported Edward and turned to leave. After a few steps, I heard David's voice behind me.
"Diana." I stopped, waiting for his next words.
David said coldly, "From now on, you and I are done. I won't care what you do anymore."I thought I was over feeling sad about David, but a pang of sorrow hit me. I slowly turned around and saw him, eyes shut tight, face set in determination.
I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Edward squeezed my hand, signaling me to leave. In the end, I just softly said, "Okay." Then I turned and left with Edward, everyone watching.
The dim streetlights cast long shadows on the quiet street. I struggled to support the drunken Edward, his steps wobbly, and he mumbled incoherently.
Under the streetlight, Edward stopped. He grabbed my arm and pulled me into his arms, his eyes locked on mine, his breath reeking of alcohol. I was a bit tipsy too.
"Diana, please let Anne go!" His voice carried a plea I had never heard before.
I frowned but kept quiet, just kept moving forward, supporting him. When I didn't respond, Edward started rambling, "Anne's been with Clara since she was 8, when she married into the Howard Family. She's always been so careful, scared of upsetting Hayden and me, never asking for anything. She's a kid who needs security, so she leans on me a lot. She's always been like this. Didn't you think Anne was cute before? Why are you going after her now?"
The cool breeze made me feel even sadder.
To Edward, all of Anne's actions were because she felt insecure, but I knew better. She was deliberately targeting me, even trying to put me in danger. She wanted to push me away from Edward so she could take my place. But I couldn't say that out loud. Even if I did, Edward wouldn't believe me, or maybe he just didn't want to.
Seeing I was still unmoved, Edward got agitated. "Diana, why can't you be more forgiving? Anne's my sister. We're family. Can't you let it go for Hayden, Clara, and me?"
Edward was usually a good drinker. No matter how much he drank, he never did anything crazy, just fell asleep. But now, he seemed like a madman, shaking my shoulders non-stop.
I stopped and looked up at Edward's face, a face I used to be so in love with but now found annoying. I saw the urgency and impatience in his eyes. My heart was conflicted. I thought he came to my rescue today because he still cared about me, but now I realized Edward just needed something from me.
I spoke calmly. "You've had too much to drink. Let's go home first."
Edward suddenly broke free from my support and rushed to the middle of the road. "Diana, give me an answer right here, right now!" His eyes were a bit blurry but stubborn.
"That's dangerous, come back!" A large truck roared past Edward, the driver sticking his head out to curse. Edward was startled and walked back to the roadside with his head down.
I took a deep breath, thinking about all the things Anne had done. She had schemed against me, making me look bad in front of Edward. How could I easily forgive her? But looking at Edward, pleading for Anne, I felt a bit of heartache. I bit my lip and still said nothing, lowered my head, and walked forward. Edward, who had sobered up a bit, didn't say anything more, following me like a child who had done something wrong.
A black sedan stopped beside me, and the driver got out, bowing respectfully. "Mr. Howard, Mrs. Howard. Mr. Wilson was worried about you two and sent me to take you home."
I looked at the brightly lit club in the distance, and wondered what David was thinking. The journey from the city center where the club was to the Howard Villa was not short, and with a drunken Edward, I couldn't walk too far. So I had to help Edward into the car with the driver's assistance.
Edward leaned back in the back seat, his eyes a bit blurry, still muttering something I couldn't hear clearly. Soon, Edward fell into a deep sleep.
