Chapter 51 Edward's Revenge

I gently pushed open the bedroom door, and the room was filled with a faint smell of alcohol. Moonlight streamed through the window, casting its glow on Edward. At this moment, he was sound asleep on the bed, his breathing even and deep, his cheeks flushed from the alcohol. His usually deep and sharp eyes were now closed, with long eyelashes casting shadows below them.

I had watched Edward sleep countless times before, but the affection I once felt was no longer there.

My heart was filled with confusion. I suddenly realized that Anne wasn't causing trouble in the past, at least not as frequently as now. Maybe Anne had grown up and could no longer suppress her nature.

I hesitated for a moment , then slowly opened the drawer of the bedside table. My gaze fell directly on the box of condoms. We bought this shortly after we got married and had only used one. Edward always felt that wearing a condom lacked sensation, so it had been left untouched in the drawer ever since. I carefully counted them, and once I confirmed the number was correct, my tense nerves relaxed a bit.

I sat on the edge of the bed, gently stroking Edward's cheek. He slept so soundly, seemingly unaware of everything. I wanted to fall asleep in Edward's arms as usual, but the thought of Anne having sat and lain on these sheets, with her scent still lingering, made me feel nauseous. In the end, I decided to rest in the guest bedroom.

As I walked out of the bedroom, I couldn't help but glance back at Edward lying on the bed.

In the moonlight, his silhouette still looked as charming as ever, but I truly felt exhausted.

The distance from the master bedroom to the guest bedroom was short, but each step felt heavy. So much had happened in the past few days that I hadn't had time to think it all through. I didn't know when Anne's possessiveness towards Edward had shifted from being coquettish to criminal.

What made me even more uneasy was that since this incident, I hadn't contacted Hayden and Clara, nor had they reached out to me. I wondered if they held any grudges against me by now.

The guest bedroom was smaller than the master bedroom, and standing at the door, I could see the entire room. It felt much colder than the master bedroom. I took a clean set of bedding from the closet and curled up in the corner of the bed.

The phone's ringtone pierced the night. I reached under the pillow for my phone. Seeing it was a message from Joshua, I rubbed my eyes and opened it: [Diana, there are some things I want to talk to you about in person.]

Joshua didn't know about the grievances between David and me, nor did he know about Edward shielding me from drinking today. Figuring Edward would likely be at home in the morning, I arranged to meet Joshua in the afternoon.

Maybe I was too tired these past few days, and I soon fell into a deep sleep.

In the morning, sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, gently waking me. I rubbed my sleepy eyes and suddenly found Edward standing by the bed. His deep eyes were focused on me. Edward's lips curved slightly, with a faint smile.

"You're awake. Get up and make me breakfast," Edward's voice was emotionless.

I propped myself up, my thick hair falling over my shoulders. I remembered that I had asked Melissa last night to buy some fresh seafood for me from the supermarket because I was going to meet Hayden and Clara.

In the kitchen, I was a bit flustered. The kitchen utensils seemed uncooperative in my hands. I searched for ingredients while looking at recipes on my phone.

Suddenly, Edward hugged me tightly from behind. His chest was warm, pressed against my back. I could feel his breath teasing my hair. My heart started to race, and a complex emotion surged within me.

I was a bit nervous, especially in this bright kitchen, but there was also a hint of uncontrollable anticipation.

Edward didn't press further, only murmuring in my ear to hurry, saying he had to get back to the company to handle an acquisition project. I let out a small sigh of relief and relaxed. In the past, Edward rarely mentioned company matters to me. In his eyes, my role was to get beauty treatments, shop, and fuss over a pet, not to concern myself with his career or emotions.

After breakfast, Edward didn't linger. He turned and went to the walk-in closet to change into a crisp suit before leaving.

Watching his car drive away, I cleaned up the leftovers on the table and prepared to go out. Originally, cleaning was Melissa's responsibility, but whenever I was home, I enjoyed doing it myself. Melissa once joked that I was the hardest-working wealthy wife.

Sunlight streamed through the coffee shop's glass windows, casting dappled light on the wooden tables and chairs. I walked into this patch of light and saw that Joshua had already arrived.

The moment I saw him, my heart tightened. His once upright posture was now hunched as he sat in the corner of the coffee shop. Under his black baseball cap, his face was sallow, and his eye bags drooped to his cheeks. The stubble on his chin made him look ten years older. When he saw me come in, he waved at me, his eyes filled with fatigue. He was a far cry from the elegant man he had been a few days ago.

"Officer Thomas, what happened to you?" I walked up and couldn't help but ask.

Joshua lifted his baseball cap slightly. "Diana, don't call me that. I've been suspended and under investigation."

"Why?" I leaned forward in shock.

"After taking Anne away that day, I was accused of using excessive force and got suspended," Joshua's voice was calm, but it was like a bomb going off in my mind.

I widened my eyes, asking, "Was it Edward?"I never thought Edward would go to such lengths. Seeing Joshua so haggard in front of me, knowing he suffered such a huge blow for helping me, I realized he was innocent, and the real culprit was the person I wanted to escape from, Edward.

"It doesn't matter who it was," Joshua rubbed his eyes and gave a bitter smile. "Remember what you once said? You said that after getting married, you would no longer be a lawyer, but this time you've gotten yourself involved. I don't regret helping you, but I won't be able to protect you in the future. You need to learn to protect yourself, understand?" His eyes were filled with determination and helplessness.

I was filled with guilt. He had lost his beloved job because of me, yet he was still thinking about my future. My heart was in turmoil. I had imagined all kinds of revenge Edward might take on me, but I never thought he would target my friends. Now, both Nolan and Joshua had lost their jobs because of me. I didn't know if Lila or Mia would be the next to be affected.
