Chapter 131 Doing One's Best
His harsh tone made me feel a wave of disgust; I couldn't stand it when people talked to me like that. So, without a second thought, I slammed the door shut, trying to block out his accusations and anger.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. After a while, David started knocking again, still sounding pissed. "Diana, you've got some nerve, shutting me out!"
By this time, I had calmed down a bit. I shouted through the door, "How did you know I was here?"
David sighed and said, "I kept calling you but couldn't get through, so I went to the Howard Villa to find you. Melissa said you hadn't been back for days, so I figured you might be here."
I slowly opened the door, stepped aside to let David in, then closed it and turned to face him. "I didn't post those photos. I've had my phone off these past two days because I've been focused on a case. I haven't even checked if those pictures are real or fake. I'm innocent too." I shrugged helplessly, feeling tired and a bit wronged.
David's tense body relaxed immediately, like a deflated balloon. "I knew something was off. Diana, who do you think did this? Could it be Edward trying to force you to reconcile with him?"
I sighed, frowning slightly, my eyes filled with uncertainty. "I don't know; he wouldn't stoop that low."
"Could it be..." David stared at me, hesitating, but I knew who he was thinking of: Anne.
"If it wasn't Edward, then it must be Anne." David frowned, looking at me worriedly. "Diana, you have to be careful! How could you let someone take such photos of you?"
"I don't know what happened. I was just about to confront Anne." As I spoke, I clenched my fists unconsciously.
David quickly waved his hand, disagreeing with my plan. "Diana, have you thought about what might happen if you anger her?"
David's question left me stunned, my body slightly stiff. Yeah, I hadn't considered what Anne might do if I provoked her. With my identity now exposed and her schemes still under wraps, the uncertainty of what other damaging information she might have sent a chill racing down my spine.
"So what do you suggest?" I asked, feeling a bit dejected, my voice low.
"Have you talked to Daisy about this?" David asked, rubbing his nose awkwardly.
I shook my head, looking at him in confusion. "She called me, but I haven't contacted her since I just turned my phone on." I sighed helplessly, feeling a bit irritated.
David frowned slightly, a thoughtful expression on his face. After a moment, he said slowly, "Why don't you ask Daisy for advice? She's a journalist, very active online, and often deals with situations like this. She might have some useful experience."
Why didn't I think of that? Daisy had always been on top of things online as a journalist. David made a lot of sense, and since I had no better ideas, I quickly grabbed my phone and called her.
On the other end, Daisy sounded more anxious than I expected, her voice filled with urgency and worry. "Diana, I knew those photos couldn't be you, right? Did someone Photoshop your face onto them?"
I shook my head, even though she couldn't see me. "No, that's really me."
There was a gasp from Daisy, and I could almost see her bewildered expression. "What? You said that's really you? But why would you post such photos? I was defending you all this time, I'm so disappointed in you." Her tone was full of disappointment and confusion.
"Daisy, although the photos are of me, please believe me, I didn't post them." My voice carried a hint of urgency and grievance.
Daisy seemed to pause for a moment, then quickly regained her composure. "I knew it wasn't you. Don't worry; I'll help clear all the bad rumors about you online."
I then remembered seeing some comments defending me while browsing the web earlier, thinking they were from a few rational netizens, but it turned out Daisy was working behind the scenes for me.
"Don't worry; I'll always stand by you and do my best for you," Daisy assured me firmly.
"Even if it means giving up on David, I won't hesitate." Her voice trembled slightly as she said this, as if she had made a big decision.
I awkwardly looked up at David, seeing his face dark and unreadable. I knew that Daisy had always secretly liked David, but he never reciprocated her feelings. I also knew that she insisted on going to Veridian after graduation to avoid seeing David. At that time, I thought Daisy had moved on, but their awkward encounter at the bar when she returned proved otherwise.
A few days ago, Daisy told me she was willing to take all of Edward's punishment for me, even if it meant going back to Veridian, which made me feel deeply guilty. Now she said she was willing to give up on David for me, making me feel even more remorseful.
I said to Daisy on the phone, "It was David who suggested I ask you for advice." As I said this, I glanced at David, my eyes showing a hint of helplessness.
Daisy laughed heartily, her laughter seeming to dispel the oppressive atmosphere. She said, "David does care about me. Even if he thought of me for your sake, I'm content."
Her tone carried a bit of self-mockery and relief. Then she seriously said, "I'll do my best to guide public opinion online, but the problem is to find the culprit and make them delete the original post." She paused, as if suddenly remembering something.
"If they can issue an apology, that would be even better. Do you know who posted it?" she asked.
"I'm not sure, but I think it might be someone from the Howard family." I frowned slightly, hesitating before voicing my suspicion.
"Do you mean Edward?" Daisy asked, her voice filled with confusion.
I sighed lightly, shaking my head helplessly. "It might be Anne."
"That bitch." Daisy immediately became furious and said, "Diana, let's split up and take action."
Before I could say anything, she angrily hung up. I listened to the busy tone on the phone, helplessly putting it down.
"Are you off to find Anne?" David could tell I was pissed, but he didn't try to stop me.
I nodded. "Yeah, I need to get to the bottom of this."
"Alright, I'll drive you." David pulled out his car keys, ready to go.
I shook my head. "Nah, don't worry about it. It's a girl thing, I'll handle it."
