Chapter 29 Diana, It's All Your Fault!

Edward was giving me the cold shoulder. When I got to the hospital, I called Mia.

As soon as she heard I was hurt, my biological mom rushed over, dragging Lila along with her.

"Diana, what happened?" Mia asked, all worried.

Honestly, I wasn't too sure myself. One minute we were all excited about our trip, and the next, everything went sideways. Poor Anne was just looking forward to some juice, and then bam, she got stabbed and kidnapped.

Despite our differences, she was still only twenty. I had no idea where she was or if she was even alive.

"Diana, you need to think about whether this was random or if someone was targeting the Howard Family," Lila, who's a sharp lawyer, pointed out, catching me off guard.

I hadn't even considered that. The cops said it was planned, but they didn't mention if it was aimed at the Howard Family or just one of us.

I desperately needed to talk to Edward, to find out what the police knew.

After trying to reach him a bunch of times, I got even more anxious. Did Hayden and Clara know? Could they handle the news about Anne?

Lila suggested we find a cop she knew to get some info and kept texting on her phone.

I couldn't wait any longer; I had to go to the police station to find Edward.

"Mrs. Howard, you need to stay in the hospital with your injuries. If you leave, sign this discharge form. We won't be responsible if things get worse!" The doctor was firm, but I didn't care. If something happened to Anne, Edward would blame me. I quickly signed and bolted out of the hospital.

An ambulance screeched to a stop in front of me. Two paramedics and Edward jumped out, wheeling Anne out. Edward held her hand, comforting her until she was taken into surgery.

We waited anxiously outside the operating room.

"Edward, weren't you going on a trip? What happened?" Mia asked. Edward shot her a terrifying glare with his bloodshot eyes, and Mia backed off.

Lila waved her phone with an incoming call and gestured to leave. I nodded, and she slipped away.

Hayden and Clara showed up with the butler. Seeing us covered in blood, Clara freaked out and collapsed.

Finally, the operating room door opened. The doctor came out and said, "The patient's injuries are serious, and she's lost a lot of blood. She has a rare blood type. Any family members with the same blood type should be ready to donate." Then he went back in.

"Rare blood type?" I had been married to Edward for four years and had known Anne for just as long, but I never knew her blood type. Everyone's eyes turned to Clara.

"I'm not. Anne's blood type is the same as her biological father's. As far as I know, this blood type is very rare in Wind City. One is Anne, and the other is her biological father. I don't know about anyone else," Clara said, her eyes swollen and tearless. "My poor child, you're only 22."

The red light in the operating room remained on. I lowered my head, unable to look at the light or Clara.

The air seemed to freeze. My heart was full of guilt and pain. Anne shouldn't have been hurt; it was all because of me. If I hadn't dodged suddenly, the knife would have stabbed me, and she would still be the cheerful girl she was. I hated my cowardice and for putting Anne in such danger.

Edward's face was full of anger, his eyes fixed on me. Suddenly, he grabbed my arm and pulled me to the stairwell, the bandages on my arm starting to bleed. I stumbled, and fell, a searing pain shooting up from my ankle.

"Diana, this is all your fault! If it weren't for you, Anne wouldn't be lying in there!" Edward gripped my injured arm tightly, his voice full of blame. "I want you to feel Anne's pain tenfold."

I lowered my head, tears welling up. "It hurts. Why are you doing this to me? The scene was chaotic; I didn't know the homeless man had a knife."

Edward clenched his fists, his body trembling slightly. "You're always so selfish. Now Anne's life is in danger, are you satisfied?"

"Selfish?" I looked up at Edward's angry face, feeling wronged. "I just instinctively dodged. I didn't push her, and I'm injured too. How can you say that to me?"

Edward turned away, no longer looking at me, but his shoulders were shaking. I knew he was too worried about Anne, and his blame was out of fear of losing her.

Anne and Edward had grown up together. I knew that in this situation, his mind unable to function.. I endured the pain in my foot and walked to his side, gently tugging at his sleeve. "Edward, I'm sorry. I know nothing I say matters now, but I really hope Anne gets better soon."

"Just go. I don't want you here." Edward's voice reverted to its icy demeanor.

"Anne's surgery isn't over yet. I can't leave. Where should I go?" I was shocked.

"Anywhere. Home, to find David, or on a trip, I don't care. Just get out of my sight!" Edward's voice was on the verge of breaking.

In the past, Edward had been cold to me, but I thought he was at least kind. This time, because of Anne's injury, Edward said such heartless words to me. I thought I wouldn't be sad, but I overestimated myself.

Clara heard the commotion in the stairwell and, holding back her sadness, came to find us. "Edward, don't blame Diana. It was an accident. Anne got hurt, and Diana was also frightened. Fortunately, the police found Anne. Don't be harsh on Diana. But what exactly happened? Can you tell me?" Despite her sadness and worry, Clara tried to persuade Edward gently.
