Chapter 400 No Need to Be So Polite
Alaric gripped the steering wheel tightly as he drove. "I set our phones to send emergency alerts to each other. When you called the cops, I got the notification and rushed over."
A mix of emotions surged within me. "Aren't you worried Nicholas might come after you?"
Alaric kept his eyes on the road and shook his head. "This car doesn't have plates. Even if he wants to retaliate, he won't know it was me who rescued you."
I felt a wave of relief at his foresight, but the recent harrowing experience replayed in my mind, leaving me shaken.
I glanced at Edward sitting beside me. He let out a quiet sigh of relief, but the fleeting admiration in his eyes was quickly replaced by a more complex emotion.
I understood that in this crisis, Alaric's thorough actions must have stirred mixed feelings in Edward.
But given the urgency of the situation, he knew this help was crucial.
The car sped through the streets, and everyone was still on edge, too stunned to speak.
After a while, Lila asked softly, "Where are we going now?"
Edward furrowed his brow in thought for a moment before replying, "Let's find a safe place first and go through the information Anne gave us. We need to organize the evidence and figure out how to make it public. That's our best chance to turn things around."
Alaric then asked me, "How about my company? The security there is pretty tight. It should provide a safe environment for you all. What do you think?"
Edward thought for a moment and then said, "There's no better place right now. Your place is the safest option. We owe you for coming to our rescue. Without you, who knows what would have happened. We're going to need your help again."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
When we arrived at Alaric's company, he led us quickly to a spacious conference room.
I carefully placed the envelope containing the evidence on the table, and Lila eagerly began to sift through it.
I looked at Lila and gently reminded her, "Lila, we need to be thorough. This evidence is crucial."
Lila nodded firmly. "Don't worry, I won't miss a single detail."
We quickly immersed ourselves in organizing the evidence.
The documents detailed Nicholas and Fiona's illegal activities in various business transactions, along with key financial records. We focused intently, categorizing the files and marking important information.
Alaric, realizing he couldn't help with the sorting, frowned and said, "Even though the company's security is usually tight, given today's situation, Nicholas might send hitmen. I'll do a thorough check around the building to be sure."
Edward looked up, gratitude evident in his eyes. "With you checking the security, we can focus on the evidence. You've done so much for us already. Thank you."
Alaric gave a sincere smile, patting Edward on the shoulder. "No need to thank me. I'm doing this for Diana."
It felt like Alaric was staking his claim over me.
With that, he turned and quickly left the room.
After a while, Alaric returned, looking more relaxed. "Everything seems secure. No signs of trouble. You can keep working without worry."
David, who had been silent, finally spoke up. He adjusted his glasses and said, "We need to find a way to get this evidence out. We should hand it over to the media or the police and let them handle it."
Just then, my phone rang again. It was the same number as before. I hesitated for a moment before answering.
Jeffrey's anxious voice came through. "Diana, is Anne with you? I can't reach her. She's not answering her messages or calls!"
My grip tightened on the phone, and my heart sank. I glanced at everyone, who had paused their work and were now looking at me with concern.
I steadied myself and tried to sound calm. "Anne did come to see me after you left, but she left in a hurry. I don't know where she went. What's going on?"
Jeffrey's voice trembled with worry. "I'm afraid she was discovered while investigating Nicholas's illegal activities. She might be in danger."
My brow furrowed, and I remembered what Anne had said before she left. I exchanged a worried look with Edward, who seemed just as concerned.
I pressed Jeffrey for more information. "Jeffrey, think carefully. Did she say anything unusual recently or mention where she might go?"
Jeffrey scoffed. "She was determined to take down Nicholas, claiming she had decisive evidence. But she's not capable of that. She said she was bringing the evidence to you. Didn't she say anything when she saw you?"
Everyone's attention turned to the pile of documents on the table.
"Did Anne go through all this trouble to get these?" David asked, incredulous.
I remembered the moment she handed over the files, but now she was missing. I thought about her feelings for Jeffrey and his current worry.
Taking a deep breath, I said, "Jeffrey, she was in a hurry when she brought the evidence. I thought she went to find you. Don't panic. We need to stay calm to avoid alerting the enemy. We'll keep organizing the evidence and try to find her. If you get any new information, contact me immediately."
"Alright, thank you. I'll keep you updated."
After hanging up, the room fell silent.
"Anne must have more crucial evidence. Her disappearance is a bad sign. We need to speed up our work and find her," I said.
Lila, her voice choked with emotion, added, "She must be in danger. Despite everything she did before, she's trying to make things right now."
She buried herself back in the documents.
Alaric stood up, his expression serious. "I'll mobilize our security team to search for her. We might find some clues."
With that, he strode out of the room to organize the search.
