Chapter 366 After the Turmoil
"With you around, I know Lila's in good hands." Lucas was about to leave but turned back, looking frustrated.
"Honestly, I can't get over this. What was my dad thinking, giving that real estate project to Anne? I'm way more qualified than she is. It's so infuriating to be sidelined like this!"
Seeing how upset Lucas was, I gently patted his shoulder. "Lucas, I get it. Everyone knows Anne can't handle that project. But you've already got that profitable tech project on your plate. Taking on more might spread you too thin."
Lucas got even more agitated. "This tech project is a nightmare, with one technical issue after another. It's exhausting, and I'm struggling to keep up. The real estate project would be so much easier to manage and would quickly boost my reputation. But now, I don't have the chance."
I didn't agree with Lucas's perspective but smiled. "But look at it this way: the tech project, though tough, will bring immense benefits and influence once you overcome the challenges. Its potential is huge. The real estate project might seem easier, but it has its own set of problems and fierce competition. If you switch now, it might not be smooth sailing. Focus on the tech project first, make a name for yourself, and then expand your business. Opportunities will come to you, and tackling the real estate project later will be much easier."
Lucas furrowed his brow and looked down, deep in thought. After a moment, he slowly nodded. "You might be right. I've been too impatient, looking for shortcuts. I should concentrate on the tech project and make it successful."
"Exactly. If you're good enough, opportunities will come." I smiled encouragingly.
"Alright, I'll focus on the tech project first." Lucas's expression regained some determination.
An idea suddenly struck me, and I added, "Speaking of the tech project, why not consult Alaric? You two are friends, right?"
"Alaric?" Lucas looked puzzled.
"Yeah, he's experienced in tech innovation and has access to cutting-edge technology and resources. He helped me with Micah's patent issue before. If you two team up, you might overcome your current challenges faster and take the project to new heights."
Lucas's eyes lit up, and he slapped his forehead. "How did I not think of that? I've been so overwhelmed with work that I forgot about him. We're friends, so working together would be much easier," he said.
"Exactly. You trust each other and can work seamlessly. His strengths complement your project perfectly, and together, you can tackle any problem."
"Great! I'll contact him tomorrow to discuss the collaboration." Lucas's tone became much lighter.
"Good luck. I believe you two will succeed. If you need anything from the Cooper Group, just let me know."
"Thanks, Diana. You've been a huge help. Once Alaric and I finalize things, I'll make sure to thank you properly." With that, Lucas waved energetically and walked away with big strides.Watching him leave, I felt pretty satisfied.
When you're in a good mood, everything just seems to go smoother. Even the pending projects at the group started moving forward.
One day, while I was working in my office, my phone rang. It was Lucas.
I thought he might have run into another problem, so I quickly answered.
To my surprise, his excited voice came through the line. "Diana, it's going great! Thank you so much!"
"Really? What happened?" I asked, feeling his excitement rub off on me.
"Alaric is super interested in the collaboration. We hit it off and have already outlined our plans," Lucas said.
This was indeed good news. Hearing this, I felt even happier.
"That's fantastic! I knew you two would make it work. Keep pushing forward, and let me know if you encounter any issues," I replied.
After hanging up, I was filled with anticipation for Lucas's project.
As I refocused on my work, my eyes fell on a photo of Lila on my desk. I remembered the promise I had made to Lucas about taking Lila to her therapy sessions, which I hadn't fulfilled yet.
I picked up the phone and dialed David's number.
"David, are you free today?" I asked.
"What's up? Tell me," David sounded a bit distracted.
"Lila has a therapy appointment today. Let's go with her for the follow-up. The doctor said this evaluation is crucial," I said.
David paused briefly before replying, "Alright, I'm free this afternoon. I'll go with you."
"Okay, let's meet at Lila's place at 2 PM," I said before hanging up.
For some reason, I felt David was a bit distracted.
At 2 PM, David's car was parked steadily downstairs. Lila and I quickly went down and got into the back seat. David glanced at us through the rearview mirror and said in a low voice, "Buckle up."
He started the car and focused on the road ahead, not saying another word. The car was eerily quiet, with only the faint sound of the wind as we drove. At first, we didn't notice anything unusual.
Lila looked out the window, a faint smile on her lips, and said softly, "I've been feeling much better lately."
I smiled and patted her hand. "That's great! You're doing so well!"
Then I turned to David. "Right, David?"
I looked at David through the rearview mirror, hoping he'd share his thoughts. After a few seconds of silence, David finally said, "Yes, she's recovering well."
But then he fell silent again.
During the drive, I chatted with Lila, taking advantage of her good mood. I glanced at David again and noticed his furrowed brow and unusually stern expression.
Suddenly, a sharp screech of brakes shattered the silence. A cat had darted out from the bushes, nearly hitting the front of David's car. It quickly jumped away and disappeared into the grass.
"David, are you okay?" I asked anxiously.
After a while, David slowly released the steering wheel, his voice trembling. "I'm fine. Sorry, I got distracted."
