Chapter 368 Awkward Confession
As we strolled into the psychology clinic, the receptionist flashed us a smile and motioned for us to hang tight for a sec.
A familiar face in a volunteer vest was darting between the consultation rooms, juggling files. It was Edward.
David spotted Edward, and a flicker of surprise crossed his face. He quickly walked over and raised his hand in greeting. "Edward! Fancy seeing you here. What brings you here?"
Edward froze at the sound of David's voice. He looked up, a bit taken aback, and managed an awkward smile. "David, long time no see. I've been volunteering here lately, trying to do something meaningful."
David's eyes took in Edward's volunteer vest, and a mix of emotions played across his face. He sighed. "Time flies, huh? It's only been a few years, but it feels like forever."
Edward laughed, though there was a hint of discomfort in his laughter. "Yeah, back then, we were young and reckless, always trying to one-up each other." As he spoke, Fiona's image suddenly flashed through his mind, causing his smile to falter.
David noticed Edward's change in demeanor and immediately got what he was thinking. He quickly switched gears. "Looking back now, those things don't seem like such big deals anymore. How's volunteering treating you?"
Edward jumped on the new topic. "Volunteering's great. It feels good to genuinely help others, and it gives me a sense of fulfillment. By the way, did you come here together?"
Edward glanced at me and Lila standing next to David.
David pointed at Lila and replied, "I'm here with Lila for her follow-up appointment. She's getting treatment here."
At that moment, Lila walked over to Edward and greeted him with a smile, "Hi, Edward."
Lila had always been pretty cold towards Edward, so her friendly greeting today caught him off guard.
Edward quickly responded, "Lila, I hope you get well soon."
He scratched his head awkwardly and then looked at me. "Diana, how have you been?"
I smiled and replied casually, "Everything's been going pretty well. Volunteering here really seems to suit you."
Edward smiled and scratched his head again, his eyes warm. "It really does. Helping people every day makes me feel more grounded."
He paused for a moment and then asked, "By the way, how's Skylar doing?"
Mentioning Skylar softened my expression. "Skylar's doing well. Melissa helps take care of her, and she's made new friends at preschool."
I didn't want to dive too deep into Skylar, so I kept it brief.
Edward nodded thoughtfully, took the number card from Lila's hand, looked at it, and handed it back to her. "It's still early. You might have to wait a bit," he said.
Suddenly, the sound of urgent, high-heeled footsteps filled the air, creating a sense of pressure.
My gut told me these footsteps were heading our way, so I looked in their direction.
"Edward!" Fiona's commanding voice instantly silenced the surroundings.
She stood tall and confident, her eyes sharp, and quickly closed the distance to Edward. "Why didn't you respond to my messages? I have resources and influence. You just need to make up your mind, and I'll help you achieve your past success."Edward's face darkened immediately; I could tell he was getting really pissed.
But before he could say anything, David jumped in, "Fiona, what are you talking about?"
Fiona shot him a cold glance, her lips curling into a sneer. "David, stop pretending. I've made up my mind. Let's finalize the divorce quickly."
David's lips twitched with frustration. "Fiona, is there really no chance for us to work things out?" he asked.
Fiona retorted, "Work things out? Do you think there's any chance left?"
She raised her chin, her eyes unwavering and resolute. "I've had enough of you and this life. I want to live for myself. Edward is my true pursuit," she declared.
Fiona's sudden declaration of love made everyone feel awkward, especially Edward, who nervously rubbed his hands together. "Fiona, calm down," he said.
"I'm very calm!" Fiona interrupted him, "Supporting your startup isn't a whim. I genuinely believe you have the ability."
Fiona seemed to realize something, her eyes sharp as she looked at Lila and then at me. She then glared at David and demanded, "David, how dare you talk about reconciliation when you're here with another woman? I bet you've been looking forward to divorcing me so you can be with her!" As she spoke, she drew a circle in the air with her finger, finally pointing at me.
David's face flushed red with embarrassment. "Fiona! Lila is our friend, and Diana and I are just helping out."
Fiona retorted, "Friend? That's a nice way to put it!"
She crossed her arms over her chest and continued, "Coming all this way for a follow-up appointment? That relationship must be really 'simple.'"
Lila's eyes welled up with tears. "Fiona, you really misunderstood. We're just friends with David."
"Misunderstood? Just friends?" Fiona scoffed. "I don't think it's that simple. They're probably using you as an excuse to meet up, and you're completely in the dark!"
Fiona glared at David and remarked, "You disgust me. Refusing to divorce while being involved with another woman. I bet you won't go back to Ignis because you want to stay here and rekindle things with Diana! You've never gotten over her!"
Fiona's voice grew louder and more agitated, her chest heaving with emotion.
David, feeling wronged, clenched his fists in anger. "Fiona, you're being unreasonable! My decision about Ignis is my own career plan and has nothing to do with Diana. Please, don't impose your baseless suspicions on me!"
I stood by, suppressing my frustration as I watched the drama unfold.
Edward couldn't help but speak up, "Fiona, you're really mistaken. David isn't like that."
Fiona shouted, "Shut up!"
Fiona, consumed by anger, didn't stop but instead escalated her outburst.
She stepped closer to Edward, her face twisted in a mocking smile, and shouted, "You're all in this together, pretending to mediate the conflict!"
Realizing she had been too harsh with Edward, Fiona softened her tone slightly. "Edward, don't be foolish. Do you really think Diana still cares about you? Her heart has long been with David! For years, she's looked at him differently. Don't be fooled!"
Her words hit Edward like a hammer, causing him to pause and a hint of doubt to cross his face.
