Chapter 126 I Was Too Hasty!
Because of the drama between Edward and me, things got a bit awkward with Joshua too. I always felt bad about it but never had the guts to reach out. Out of the blue, he called me today. I was a bit taken aback but managed to put on a casual smile and walked over, "Joshua, long time no see, Mr. Busy."
Joshua took off his hat, scratched his head, and looked a bit awkward. "Don't start," he said, "I'm swamped with cases every single day." He frowned, looking pretty worn out.
"You're the head honcho now, and you still have to get your hands dirty?" I asked, genuinely puzzled.
Joshua shook his head with a wry smile. "Not only do I have to dive into cases myself, but I've also been pulling all-nighters for days. Diana, it's probably a good thing you didn't end up with me. You dodged a bullet, leaving me to be a workaholic bachelor." He shrugged, looking resigned.
"Is it that bad?" I asked, pretending not to catch his drift.
Joshua rubbed his temples, looking serious. "It's an international fraud case, involving some big shots. It's a real mess." He clammed up after that, and I knew better than to push for details.
"Alright, you better get back to it. I won't keep you." Just as I was about to leave, Joshua called out, "Diana, why are you alone?" He glanced around.
"Just needed some fresh air," I lied, not wanting him to worry.
"Let's grab a meal sometime when you're free," he said, looking hopeful.
"Sure, I'm free now. What are we eating?" I teased, winking.
Joshua glanced at his team, looking a bit embarrassed. "Not now. I've got work."
"Just messing with you! Go on, get busy!" I said, giving him a playful push.
"Alright, I'll catch you later," Joshua said, flashing a grin before running back to his team.
As I walked up to the hospital entrance, Clara, who was just coming out, spotted me. "Diana, what are you doing here again?" she asked, suspicion and annoyance in her eyes.
Not wanting her to know I was there for Hayden, I looked down and lied, saying I was there to see Edward. Clara's face twisted in anger. "Edward's just starting to get better, and now you're here to mess things up again?" she snapped.
"He's my husband; why shouldn't I be here?" I shot back, meeting her glare with defiance.
"How dare you say that? You've been married for years and still haven't had a child," Clara sneered. She knew how to hit where it hurt, but I was past caring.
"Stay away from Edward and Anne. They're my only children; don't you dare ruin their lives," she warned, pointing at me threateningly. Clara's warning really ticked me off, and I could feel my face getting hot with anger. I stepped closer and snapped, "Aren't I my parents' precious child too? I've called you 'Mom' for years, and you've never cared about me. My mom died because of the Howard family's pressure—what more do you want from me?" My voice got louder as my anger grew, and people started to stare.
Clara, probably worried about the family's reputation, quickly covered my mouth and cut me off, "Enough, the past is the past. Don't bring it up again." Her eyes showed a hint of panic, and her voice dropped.
She might have wanted to brush it off, but Mia's death was something I could never forget. I stood there, feeling lost, my eyes vacant and my face full of sorrow.
Just then, a cheerful ringtone broke the tension, and Clara took the chance to hurry away.
Watching her leave, I took a deep breath, tried to calm down, and shook my head. I pulled out my phone—it was Daisy calling. I answered with a slight smile.
"Diana, are you up?" Daisy sounded relaxed and in a good mood.
I was about to vent about Clara when a car zoomed by, honking loudly. Startled, I jumped to the side, my body trembling and my eyes wide with fear.
The noise was pretty loud, and Daisy's surprised voice came through the phone, "No way, you're already out? I can't believe David let you leave so early..."
"What are you talking about!" I knew she was joking, but I couldn't help but feel a bit shy and helpless.
"Okay, enough kidding. Have you been online?” Daisy’s voice turned serious and a bit mysterious.
I felt something was off. My brows furrowed slightly, and I asked, "Did something happen?" A hint of confusion crossed my eyes as I stood a bit straighter.
"Did you see what I posted last night?" Daisy's voice had a hint of pride.
I became alert, my eyes widening slightly. "What did you post?" My heart started racing, a sense of unease creeping in.
Daisy sounded incredulous, raising her voice, "You forgot? You asked me to expose Edward wanting to have a child with Aria, and Anne's inappropriate feelings for Edward."
She paused for a moment, then continued, "Lila and I thought it would be more sensational to expose Edward and Anne's affair first, then the child with Aria, so we only posted about Anne's crush on Edward."
"Those recordings were posted by you?" I was in disbelief, my mouth slightly open, eyes wide with surprise.
