Chapter 371 Parent-Child Time
Skylar spotted Lila and me chilling on the bench right away, her eyes lighting up as she waved like crazy.
Lila and I got up and headed over to her.
"Mommy! Lila!" Skylar's clear, childlike voice rang out at the kindergarten entrance, making the other parents around us smile.
I quickly knelt down and opened my arms, catching Skylar as she ran into my hug.
Skylar squeezed my neck tight, her little head nuzzling against my shoulder. Then she turned to Lila, reaching out her tiny hand. "I want Lila to hold me," she said.
Lila smiled warmly, gently scooping Skylar into her arms and planting a kiss on her rosy cheek. "My sweet Skylar, did you miss me?"
"Super much!" Skylar replied in her sweet, childlike voice, her face lighting up with a big smile.
Then she turned to me, pleading. "Mommy, I want to invite Lila to our house to play with my toys."
"Sure, Lila can play with you as much as you want!" I agreed without hesitation.
The troubles from the hospital seemed to have vanished, and life felt perfect at that moment.
The walk home wasn't far, so we strolled back, soaking in this rare, peaceful time.
Skylar excitedly broke free from Lila's arms, hopping and skipping ahead of us, occasionally picking up fallen leaves from the roadside to show us her new "treasures."
Lila and I slowed our pace, smiling as we watched Skylar. She hummed a new song she had learned at kindergarten, her cheerful spirit infecting everything around us, even if the lyrics were a bit unclear and the tune off-key.
As we passed a flower shop, Skylar stopped, her eyes full of dreams.
She said, "Mommy, when I grow up, I'm going to buy you lots and lots of beautiful flowers. I want to open a flower shop and turn our house into a garden!"
I walked up and gently patted her head, saying softly, "Alright, I'll be waiting for that day."
Just then, a cat that had been wandering near the flowers suddenly jumped out in front of Skylar.
Skylar's cheerful steps froze instantly, and her smile disappeared. She let out a sharp scream and buried her head in my arms, her small body trembling slightly as she cried, "Mommy, a cat!"
I quickly hugged Skylar tightly, gently patting her back to calm her down. "Skylar, don't be afraid. The cat won't hurt you."
Lila knelt down, speaking softly. "Skylar, don't be scared. The kitty is just a bit playful. Look, it got scared by us too."
She pointed to the cat, which was now huddled in a corner, watching us warily.
Skylar peeked out from my arms, her eyes fixed on the cat, and said timidly, "I'm sorry, kitty. I scared you."
The cat seemed to understand Skylar's words, meowing before disappearing back into the flowers.
Lila said, "Skylar is such a sweet and sensitive child."
I nodded, my eyes full of affection for Skylar.
We continued walking, with Skylar staying close to me, occasionally glancing back to see if the cat was following.
Lila's gaze remained fixed on Skylar, her eyes filled with admiration. She spoke softly, "Diana, spending time with you and seeing how adorable Skylar is, I really envy you. I dream of having my own child, watching them grow up and experiencing the purest joy in the world, just like now."
Hearing Lila's words, I felt deeply moved.
After everything that had happened, I had seen Lila struggle through the depths of pain, her spirit low. But with the support of family, loved ones, and friends, she had rediscovered hope for her children and the future. How could I not be happy for her?
Though having a child meant more responsibilities and challenges, I believed that with Lila's kindness and resilience, she would make an excellent mother.
I gently tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and smiled. "You will, Lila. You and Lucas will have your own little angel."
Lila smiled shyly, her gaze on Skylar growing even more tender.
We continued walking home, the setting sun casting long shadows of the three of us.
Skylar, still close to me, seemed to have quickly recovered from the cat incident. She began chattering about her friends at kindergarten, her innocent voice echoing down the street.
However, Lila seemed to notice something, frowning slightly as she subtly nudged my arm and whispered. "Diana, I feel like someone is following us."
My heart skipped a beat. I discreetly looked around, and just as I glanced behind us, I caught a familiar figure ducking behind a newsstand.
Even though it was just a quick glimpse, I recognized Edward.
Lila's eyes widened in surprise, and she instinctively shielded Skylar, looking warily in Edward's direction.
"Why is he following us?" Lila's tone was tinged with annoyance.
Skylar looked at us, sensing the tension, and tugged on my hand, whispering. "Mommy, I'm scared."
I held Skylar's hand tightly, speaking gently. "Skylar, it's okay. I'm here."
At that time, Lila turned and called out loudly, "Edward, stop hiding. Come out!"
After a moment, Edward slowly emerged from behind the newsstand, looking a bit uneasy.
His gaze first fell on Skylar, filled with longing, before he looked at me.
I stared directly at Edward, trying to keep my voice steady but unable to hide a hint of accusation. "Edward, what are you doing here? Why are you following us?"
Edward took a small step forward, his lips trembling as he struggled to find the right words. His eyes never left Skylar as he stammered, "Diana, I was in the area for work and happened to see you. I couldn't help but follow for a bit. I just wanted to see Skylar, to know how she's doing."
Apparently, young Skylar didn't remember Edward. She peeked out from behind me and said in her sweet, childlike voice, "Mommy, I've seen this man before. When Melissa takes me to school, he often goes the same way."
Hearing Skylar's words, I felt my mind go blank. Edward had been appearing in Skylar's life without my knowledge. Even Melissa, who took Skylar to school every day, hadn't noticed.
