Chapter 165 Waited Too Long

Looking at Edward's face, I realized I didn't hate him as much as I used to. His good looks still made my heart skip a beat. And now, with his baby growing inside me, the idea of us as a family of three didn't seem so far-fetched anymore.

Edward must have felt my stare because, even with his eyes closed, he reached out and grabbed my hand. "What's on your mind?" he asked, his voice smooth and soothing.

I traced my fingers over his palm and whispered, "I never thought we'd get back to this place."

He smiled, all confident and sure of himself. "Diana, I told you before, as long as you play nice, I can give you everything you want."

I sighed, the weight of his words settling heavily on my shoulders. I looked at him, still confused. I couldn't figure out if he really loved me or just liked having control over me. This mix of feelings hung around like a fog I couldn't shake.

Back at the Howard Villa, Edward led me to the main bedroom. The thought of Anne having slept in that bed made me hesitate. When I stopped at the door, Edward asked, "Aren't you coming in?"

I felt a wave of disgust and shook my head. "I'd rather go back to my room," I said.

Edward just laughed softly. "What are you talking about? This is your room." He opened the door and pulled me inside.

The bedroom was completely redone. New bed, new wardrobe, new coffee table. I stood there, stunned.

Edward, looking pretty pleased with himself, said, "Our baby's coming soon, so everything has to be the best."

I felt a little touched. Even if he said it was for the baby, at least he was willing to make changes. Maybe he really would adjust things with Anne for our child's sake.

The night wrapped around the Howard Villa like a thick, black blanket. But lying on that soft mattress, I couldn't sleep. Edward was next to me, breathing steady, but the subtle quickening of his heartbeat told me that he was awake. I turned to face him, his chiseled features etched sharply even in the dim light. I watched him quietly, trying not to touch him, not wanting to break the peace of the night.

Suddenly, the mood shifted.

Edward turned over, pulling me into his arms. His breath tickled my ear as he whispered, "Why are you still awake? What are you looking at?"

Caught in the act, my heart skipped a beat, my cheeks flushed with a sudden warmth, and I quickly shut my eyes, stammering, "I was asleep."

As soon as I said it, I knew it was a lame excuse.

Edward pinched my nose playfully and teased, "You talk in your sleep now?"

Feeling guilty but still stubborn, I shot back, "You woke me up."

He smirked, a different look in his eyes. "Since you're awake, don't go back to sleep."

Before I could react, his lips brushed my cheek. I tensed up, thinking about the baby. I tried to pull away, but his strong arms held me tight. His voice had a hint of anger. "Why are you avoiding me? Do you think I'm going to do something to you?"

I was anxious and scared, curling up into a ball to show my protest.

But Edward didn't stop. He gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his eyes full of affection. "Diana, I've waited so long for this. Thank God you finally let me wait. You've done well."

His warm breath on my neck made me feel all tingly and flustered. I didn't know what to do, so I mimicked him, reaching out to touch his chest.

He seemed moved, his voice tense. "You're driving me crazy."

Then his gaze turned intense, and he warned, "Diana, you're playing with fire."

Before I could say anything, he kissed me, giving me no chance to explain.

I regretted it instantly. How could I be so impulsive? I was pregnant, and it wasn't a stable pregnancy. How could I provoke him like this? If anything happened to the baby, I'd never forgive myself.

Edward kissed me deeply for a while, then suddenly pulled away, looking pained. He rushed into the bathroom, and soon, the sound of running water filled the room. For some reason, it made me think of him masturbating to Anne's photo in the dressing room. That unbearable image was like a thorn in my heart, sparking anger. The anger grew, mixed with resentment and disgust.

Thinking of this, I held back my tears and quietly left the main bedroom while Edward was still in the bathroom. I went to the guest room. The mattress there wasn't as soft and comfy, but it offered a rare peace that helped me calm down a bit. I lay on the bed, unable to sleep, staring at the ceiling. My mind replayed everything that had just happened, and my emotions were all over the place.

I had no idea how long it had been when the door creaked open. It was Edward. Not in the mood to deal with him, I quickly shut my eyes, pretending to be asleep, hoping he'd leave me alone.

"Diana, are you hiding here because you're scared I can't control myself?" he whispered.
