Chapter 356 Unsatisfactory Result
Jessa gripped Lila's hand, her voice shaky as she finally spoke up, "Diana, did they catch the guy who hurt Lila? We can't let someone like that get away with it."
I nodded, lowering my voice to keep things calm. "Mr. and Mrs. Green, they got him. It was Lanny. And Nicholas has already taken care of it."
When I said "taken care of," I tried to sound as normal as possible, but I knew it came out softer than I intended.
"What do you mean?" Lachlan raised an eyebrow, clearly puzzled.
I hesitated, biting my lip, then decided to be honest. "Nicholas had him killed. Quietly."
"What?" Jessa's eyes went wide with shock. She exclaimed, "How is this possible? How can he take matters into his own hands and kill someone?"
Lila looked just as stunned, her mouth open but no words coming out.
Lachlan's face turned serious, his voice full of disapproval. "No wonder Lucas wouldn't tell us anything. Even if Lanny was a bad guy, he should've faced the law. What Nicholas did is illegal!"
Jessa nodded, worry etched on her face. "Exactly. If this gets out, how can Lila keep being a lawyer? How can she earn people's trust?"
Lachlan's frustration grew. "They're no better than criminals! The law is supposed to handle justice. What does this say about our legal system?"
Lila, already feeling down, looked even paler. She bit her lip and finally managed to speak. "Did this involve the Wilson family? And what about David? He's our friend."
Her eyes started to well up with tears.
I sighed, sitting by her bed, trying to reassure her. "Lila, don't worry. Lanny was the main problem. The rest of the Wilson family wasn't involved. David was shocked and angry when he found out and has been helping with the aftermath. He was the one who told me where Lanny was hiding. He really cares about you and asked me to tell you to focus on getting better."
Jessa wiped her tears and complained, "He says he cares, but why hasn't he come to visit us?"
I quickly explained, "He wanted to, but the Wilson family is in chaos right now, and Fiona is causing trouble. He really can't get away. He'll come to see you as soon as he can."
Lila felt a bit more at ease after hearing this. "How did it come to this? David must be feeling awful. He always considered us friends, but now this happened because of Lanny. Is the Wilson family suffering a lot?"
I sighed again, saying, "The Wilson family is definitely affected. Even though David and Daniel weren't directly involved in any crimes, the Wilson Group is under a lot of scrutiny because of Lanny's actions. Many business partners have pulled out, and the company's stock price has plummeted. It's a huge blow, and it'll be tough to recover quickly."
Lila's eyes reddened again, and she leaned back on her pillow, murmuring, "I just wish everyone could be okay."
Seeing Lila so upset, I gently patted her shoulder, trying to comfort her. "Lila, try not to worry too much. David wants you to get better soon. Focus on healing for now. We'll handle everything else."The room went dead quiet, the only sound being the wind outside, almost like it was sighing.
Lachlan couldn't help but break the silence. "The Wilson family has definitely hit rock bottom, but wrongdoers need to be punished. It's just a shame innocent folks get caught in the crossfire."
The atmosphere was heavy, and I was trying to think of how to comfort Lila when my phone buzzed. It was a call from Fiona.
I hesitated for a moment before stepping out to answer. "Fiona, what's up?" I asked.
Fiona's voice was sharp on the other end. "Diana, where are you? Are you with David?"
I frowned, feeling a twinge of annoyance. "I'm at the hospital with Lila. David's been swamped lately. Don't you know?"
Fiona snorted. "Of course, he's busy cleaning up Lanny's mess. I'm telling you, the Griffin family won't suffer any more because of the Wilson family. I'm divorcing David."
I was taken aback. I knew the Griffin family was unhappy with the Wilson family, but I didn't expect Fiona to be so direct about divorce.
"Fiona, don't be rash. David is already under a lot of pressure, and the Wilson family is in crisis."
Fiona retorted, "Crisis? They brought this on themselves!"
Her emotions surged. "If it weren't for that bastard Lanny, would I have lost my child? Would the Griffin family be dragged down? David, as my husband, should have maintained the relationship between our families. Did he do that? Now, the Wilson family's reputation is in tatters, and the Wilson Group is on the brink of collapse. I have no reason to stay in this marriage."
I fell silent for a moment, trying to reason with her. "Fiona, David is having a hard time too. He's been working hard to fix things. If you bring up divorce now, it will be a huge blow to him. And you two did have feelings for each other."
Fiona's tone was resolute. "Feelings? In the face of interests, feelings are worthless."
"I've made up my mind. I'll have the lawyer draft the divorce papers, and David will have to sign them. And you, stay away from him. Don't think I don't know you've always had a thing for him." With that, she hung up.
I stood in the hallway, trying to suppress my emotions.
When I returned to the room, Lila noticed my pale face and asked with concern, "Diana, what's wrong? Who was that on the phone?"
I didn't want to tell Lila about Fiona's divorce plans, fearing it would worry her. But Lila guessed anyway, looking at me with worry.
"Was it David? Did something happen?"
I shook my head. "It was Fiona."
Lila was shocked, unable to speak for a while, then she said softly, "You and Edward divorced, and now Fiona and David are heading that way too. When will all this end?"
I looked into Lila's worried eyes and spoke gently, "Lila, no one can predict matters of the heart. Fiona and David's marriage is complicated and beyond our control. But look, we've been through so much, and now you're recovering. That's a good start."
