Chapter 340 Confrontation
Thinking on my feet, I fired up my computer, yanked the screen closer, and pulled up all the docs related to the overseas project. Lila and I had combed through these files before and found nothing, but I was sure we missed something.
I went over each document with a fine-tooth comb, not letting a single detail slip by, especially anything about Lanny. And bingo, in the latest list of partners, a new company popped up, with Lanny's name listed as a shareholder.
This clue made my suspicion skyrocket, and I was convinced Lila's sudden disappearance had something to do with Lanny.
But this company was like a ghost, barely any info on it. I dug through various business databases but came up empty on its trade dealings.
Why would Lanny invest in such a shady company for no apparent reason? What was he up to?
Whatever his game was, the priority was finding Lila and making sure she was safe.
Just as I was lost in thought, a rapid knock on the door broke the silence in my office.
Annoyed, I yelled, "Come in!"
Alaric pushed the door open and walked in, immediately noticing my stressed-out look.
"Diana, what's going on? You look like you've seen a ghost," Alaric said, his face full of concern.
I was frantic, pointing at the computer screen with shaking fingers, my voice almost cracking. "Alaric, Lila's missing! She went to meet with the overseas project contact and hasn't come back, not a word from her. I checked the company's info and found a link to Lanny. I'm freaking out, thinking this is tied to Fiona's car accident. That was no accident. Now Lila's gone, and I'm losing it!"
Alaric's voice was firm, "Lanny's a ruthless jerk! Fiona's accident was fishy enough, and now he's messed with Lila too."
My eyes were already red, and I was on the verge of tears. "Alaric, please, help me find her. Even the smallest lead, we need to track her down. I can't let anything happen to her. If she gets hurt because of this project, I'll never forgive myself."
I was practically screaming by the end.
Alaric hadn't expected me to be so emotional. He said, "Diana, this is a lot. Calm down and give me the details."
I snapped at Alaric, "There's no time for that! We need to find Lila now!"
Alaric hesitated. "I have a new tracking system, but it's still in testing. I'm not sure if it'll work. In theory, it can pinpoint locations within feet, but it hasn't been tested in real situations."
I was desperate, my voice trembling. "Alaric, we have no other options. Even if it's a long shot, we have to try."Alaric gritted his teeth. "Alright, Diana. I know some folks in the tech world. I'll reach out and get all the help we can."
I couldn't help but vent, "Lila's disappearance is driving me nuts. I feel like there's a massive conspiracy here. Lanny's been stirring up trouble with this project, investing in shady companies, and causing issues at the worst times. I'm sure he's behind this."
Alaric reassured me, "I get it, Diana. We need to find Lila fast. She could be in serious danger, and every second counts!"
He continued, "Let me use your computer. I'll start the tracking right away."
I quickly made room for Alaric, who began typing furiously. The dense lines of code seemed like our only hope of finding Lila. With each keystroke, I silently prayed for a breakthrough.
"Why is this signal so unstable?" Alaric frowned, rapidly switching commands on the keyboard. He exclaimed, "Damn it; if only it were more precise!"
The tracking system's interface was flashing constantly, with maps and charts cycling quickly as his eyes followed the movements.
Realizing that Alaric needed to stay focused, I decided to contact Lanny, hoping to squeeze some useful information out of him. I was determined to get something from him today, no matter what it took.
I dialed Lanny's number, skipping any pleasantries, and directly questioned, "Lanny, Lila went to negotiate with our overseas project contact this morning but has gone missing. Is this related to you?"
Lanny's voice immediately rose, impatiently shouting, "Diana, what do you mean by that? How can you suspect me out of nowhere? I wouldn't do such a thing! Don't accuse me unjustly!"
"Lila went to your territory, and now she's missing. How convenient is that?" I retorted, pressing him further. "Stop pretending. And about Fiona's miscarriage, Ronnie has investigated thoroughly. You're the mastermind! Don't think you can fool everyone."
There was a brief silence on the other end, then Lanny raised his voice, trying to sound calm. "Don't listen to Ronnie's nonsense. He must be mistaken. I, Lanny, do things openly and honestly. I wouldn't stoop to such low acts."
In the past, Lanny would always act nonchalant even when misunderstood. His anger today was clearly a sign of guilt.
I sneered, dismissing his excuses. "Ronnie has solid evidence. He said he's going to take action against you! Now Lila has disappeared, and I've already tracked her location."
I deliberately tried to scare Lanny.
Lanny's tone was noticeably flustered, but he still refused to admit. "Stop slandering me! I really don't know anything about this. Don't cause trouble."
"Fine, Lanny. I hope you're telling the truth. If I find out you're involved in Lila's disappearance, you won't get away with it!" I suppressed my anger and coldly threatened him.
"Do whatever you want. I'm not afraid of you," Lanny spat out before hanging up the phone.
