Chapter 33 The Failed Divorce Attempt

"Mom and Dad are waiting for you at the hospital," Edward said, not wasting any words. "Come with me."

Ever since Anne's accident, Edward's been a real pain. I still had no clue how Hayden and Clara felt about me, so I figured I might as well go back and find out, especially from Anne's mom, Clara. Plus, it was a good chance to tell Hayden and Clara that Edward and I were getting a divorce. The thought made me a bit sad. To be fair, they'd always been good to me. It sucked that their son Edward cheated on me with his half-sister, Anne.

I opened the car door and got in, but Edward just stood there.

"Aren't we going?" I asked, sticking my head out the window.

Once Edward got in, the car smoothly headed towards the hospital. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

"Do you really think Nolan can help you?" Edward asked, frowning, his tone dripping with skepticism.

That got me fired up. "Nolan's great at his job. We're just colleagues." I turned my head away, staring at the scenery whizzing by, feeling wronged.

"Colleagues? Who knows what he's really after," Edward shot back, anger flashing in his eyes.

"Can you stop being so unreasonable?" I snapped, my frustration boiling over. Our argument filled the car, making the air feel stifling.

"Unreasonable? Have you forgotten who Nolan is?" Edward slammed on the brakes, pulling over to the side of the road.

My head hit the windshield. If I hadn't been wearing a seatbelt, I might've flown out. I turned to look at Edward, only to find him staring back at me.

His eyes weren't as harsh as usual; there was even a hint of softness. My eyes welled up, and Edward seemed surprised before he grabbed my hand tightly.

I remembered how he used to hold Anne's hand like this, which made me feel uneasy. We locked eyes, and it felt like time had stopped. Edward slowly leaned in, and my heart started racing. The next second, he suddenly kissed me hard.

His lips were soft, but the kiss was anything but gentle. It was passionate and forceful, invading my mouth bit by bit, sucking on my lips and tongue. If this were before, I might've thought it was his unique way of showing love. I would've responded eagerly, maybe even taken the lead.

But now I knew he was just trying to get back at me. Edward seemed clueless about how to express his feelings, only knowing how to kiss me aggressively and possess me. This physical contact made me feel sick.

I tried to push Edward away, but he held me tighter. I'd resisted like this countless times before but never succeeded. In my anger, I bit Edward's lower lip, forcing him to let go. He touched his swollen lip and restarted the car, saying angrily, "You weren't like this before."

I'd always been like this; Edward just never noticed. I really wanted to ask him, what did he think I was like before? Over the years, I'd changed so much for him, only to end up here. Luckily, this would all end today.

Halfway through the drive, Edward got a call. I thought it might be from Anne, but he mentioned Albert. After hanging up, Edward turned ice-cold. He pulled over again and told me to get out.

I had no idea what I'd done to piss him off this time, so I just stared at him silently. Seeing me not budging, Edward explained, "Albert called. There's a problem at the company. I need to go back now. You can go on your own."

Edward was always good at handling business stuff, so his serious look made me realize this was probably a big deal. Guess I wouldn't be seeing Anne today. I got out of the car alone. Luckily, this area was pretty busy, and I quickly hailed another cab.

"Sir, take me to Stellar Legal Advisors." Since I had nothing to do at home, I figured I might as well go to the law firm. Nolan and Lila were really worried about me. But there was one person there I didn't want to see—David.

Thinking about David made my emotions all tangled up. He used to be the person I disliked the most, but lately, he didn't seem so bad. Still, I couldn't say I liked him.

'He's got a huge business empire to run; this law firm is just a small piece of it. He probably won't even be there,' Thinking this made me feel better. But as I hummed a tune and walked into the office building, I realized things weren't that simple. David was sitting at the head of the conference table, a faintly mocking smile on his lips, making me shiver.

"David, what are you doing here?" I couldn't help but ask.

"This is my investment. Why can't I be here?" David laughed triumphantly.

"Of course, you can inspect the work anytime." I sat down next to David and casually picked up his cup to drink.

"Hey, that's my cup! You're a married woman!" David, who was super picky, hated when others used his stuff. He leaned over the conference table to grab the cup from me.

"So what? I'm getting divorced." I nonchalantly wiped my mouth. "Mr. Wilson has excellent taste in beverages."

"Diana, are you serious?" David was clearly shocked, his body frozen mid-air.

I nodded. "The divorce papers were sent to Edward a long time ago; he just hasn't signed them yet."

"I'm out here working to earn money to pay back what he spent on me over the years!" I slumped into the chair. "I was planning to talk to his parents today, but he had an emergency at work and canceled again."

"Diana, you better think this through. There's no turning back. Once Edward signs, you won't be Mrs. Howard anymore."

Oddly enough, David didn't seem to support my decision to divorce at this moment.

"Of course, I know," I nodded solemnly. "I don't want to be Mrs. Howard anymore."
