Chapter 75 Diana is Your Sister-in-Law!

The guy looked up, and when I finally saw his face, my heart dropped. It was Alice's husband, Eric Allen.

I blinked in shock and stammered, "Eric? Is that you?"

Eric's face was a mix of shame and defiance. He struggled a bit and yelled, "Ms. Cooper, right?"

Edward frowned, looking confused, and asked, "Diana, what the hell is going on? Do you know this nutjob?"

I took a deep breath to steady myself and explained, "He's Eric, Alice's husband." Turning to Eric, who was squirming under the bodyguards' grip, I asked, "Why did you attack me?"

Eric snorted, his eyes blazing. He struggled and said, "I wanted to talk to you. Things between Alice and me aren't what you think."

I walked up to him, squatted down, and looked him in the eye. "Mr. Allen, I get that you're upset, but attacking me isn't the way. You're just making things worse for yourself."

Edward scoffed, "This guy came at you like a maniac. Good thing I stopped him, or you'd be hurt."

I realized Edward's presence was a bit odd, so I softly asked, "Honey, why are you here?"

Edward hugged me, "Clara said you came to the law firm, and she was worried, so she asked me to check on you. Good thing I did. Are you okay?" He looked me over, concerned.

At that moment, I felt a wave of anxiety, not from the attack, but from Edward's sudden concern. The last time Anne had someone attack me here, Edward ignored me and only cared about Anne. Now, he was asking if I was okay, and it felt strange.

Alice rushed over, her face pale when she saw Eric restrained. She grabbed him, "Are you crazy, Eric? What are you doing? How could you attack Ms. Cooper?" Her voice was desperate.

Seeing Alice, Eric's eyes softened a bit, but he stayed stubborn, "Alice, I won't divorce you. No matter what, I believe you won't betray me."

Alice started crying. She looked at me helplessly and said, "Ms. Cooper, please help me."

I stood up and said to Eric, "Eric, things might not be what you think. If you have a point, we can handle it legally, but attacking me isn't the way."

"Call the police. We need to call the police!" Edward said.

Eric was silent for a moment, then slowly raised his head, "I'm sorry, Ms. Cooper. I was wrong. I was too anxious to talk to you. Please forgive me."

Seeing Alice's tearful eyes, I felt a bit heartbroken. After a moment, I turned to Edward and said, "Honey, this might just be a misunderstanding. Since Alice and Eric are public figures, we should try to handle this quietly."

A cold wind blew, rustling the leaves and making me shiver. Edward looked at the flickering streetlight and decided, "No, we need to call the police. Eric's actions are illegal. We can't just let this slide."

Seeing the tension, Nolan suddenly said, "Mr. Howard, how about you take Ms. Cooper home to rest, and I'll talk to Mr. Allen?" Nolan didn't want to involve the police and kept looking at me for help.

I grabbed Edward's arm and whispered, "Honey, I'm starving, and Clara's waiting for us at home for dinner. Let's head back." I glanced at Eric, then went on, "As for this guy, Nolan can handle this."

Edward couldn't argue with that, so we left.

The ride home was thick with tension. Edward's face was stormy, his fists clenched tight. I sat next to him, feeling uneasy, not sure how to break the silence.

"Honey," I started cautiously, my voice barely above a whisper. Almost immediately, Edward stopped and turned to me, "Diana, why do you insist on being a lawyer? Don't you see how dangerous it is?" His voice shook with anger.

I felt a pang of hurt. "I'm just doing my job," I said, meeting his gaze but feeling unsure. Why did other lawyers not face so many dangers, while I seemed to attract trouble since my internship?

"Tell me," Edward said, his voice hard, "You said Joshua was protecting you back then. Was it like what I did today?"

I didn't expect him to bring up Joshua. I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, but my voice still had a hint of frustration. "What should I do then? Give up my dream of being a lawyer because of threats?" I looked at him, my eyes pleading for understanding.

Edward's anger faded into something more complex: helplessness and disappointment. "Diana, the world isn't just black and white. If you keep being reckless, you'll get hurt. If you want to work, I can find you a position in the Howard Group. Or you could be the president of the Cooper Group."

I finally understood. Edward wanted me to leave the legal profession, but that wasn't an option for me.

When we got back to the Howard mansion, Clara was waiting at the door. She came forward and held my hand, "I knew there must be something. You've been through a lot." The bodyguards must have filled her in.

Anne stood nearby, glaring at me. She didn't rush to hug Edward, probably because Clara was there.

During dinner, Anne couldn't hold back. She banged the dishes loudly, and when I ignored her, she finally slammed her utensils down. "Diana, if you can't handle being a lawyer, then quit! Edward works hard enough, and he finally has time to go to an exhibition with me on this weekends, he has to run off to save you. I'm sick of it!"

I put down my utensils, and Edward frowned, doing the same.
