Chapter 304 There Is Gain and Loss
Wilmer did as he was told and left the room, shutting the door behind him. I felt pretty stranded.
Now, it was just me and a bunch of gigolos.
One of them grabbed a glass of wine from the table and walked over, saying, "Ms. Cooper, let me toast to you." The others chimed in, "Ms. Cooper, have a drink!"
I cut them off, annoyed, "I don't have time for this. Please, leave." I pointed at the door.
The guy with the wine looked uneasy. "Ms. Cooper, Nicholas booked us for you today, and the fee's already paid. We have to do our job."
He stepped closer with the wine glass.
I waved him off, "I won't ask for a refund. Don't worry about it."
The lead gigolo sighed, "Ms. Cooper, you don't get it. At this club, if we take the money but don't do the job, we get punished. Worst case, we might have to serve men. We'd rather stick with female clients."
The others nodded in agreement.
I took a deep breath, shocked that this place had such shady practices. But I wasn't interested in these guys, and Skylar was waiting for me at home.
After thinking for a bit, I had an idea. "You all stay in this room until Nicholas's booking time is up, then you can leave."
The lead gigolo hesitated. "That's against the rules."
I didn't want to argue anymore, so I said firmly, "If you don't want to break the rules, fine. See the guy guarding the door? I can call him in, and you can serve him."
The gigolos glanced at Wilmer outside the door and gasped.
I called out, "Wilmer, come in here for a second."
The lead gigolo quickly said, "No, Ms. Cooper, we'll stay here and won't go anywhere. You can go about your business."
The others nodded quickly.
"Ms. Cooper." Wilmer entered the room.
I looked at him and said, "Nicholas sent you to protect me, so you must know me well, right?"
Wilmer nodded respectfully. "Yes, I've done my research."
I nodded back and pointed to the gigolos. "I need to use the restroom. Explain to them how to serve me."
Wilmer looked surprised, clearly not expecting this.
Before he could react, I hurried out of the room.
I didn't actually go to the restroom. Instead, I took the chance to leave the club. I thought I'd need to call a cab, but Theo saw me and pulled the car up to the entrance. I quickly got in.
"Ms. Cooper, where to now?" Theo asked.
"Home," I replied, glancing at my watch. "Skylar is waiting for me to put her to bed. Tomorrow's her first day of preschool, and I want to take her myself."
Theo nodded and started the car.As we drove, I said, "You're the company's general manager now. It's not really convenient for you to always be my chauffeur."
Theo chuckled, "I owe my position to you. Driving you around is the least I can do."
I couldn't help but vent a little. "Nicholas assigned me a bodyguard, but I just ditched him."
Theo raised an eyebrow. "A bodyguard?"
I offered a wry smile and said, "He claims it's for my safety, but I know he's really just trying to keep an eye on me and the business."
Theo nodded thoughtfully and fell silent.
Curious, I asked, "What are you thinking about?"
Theo glanced at me through the rearview mirror and said slowly, "I'm thinking about the new branch we established today. You announced it this morning, and Nicholas sent someone tonight. It seems my branch won't have peace either."
I sighed, "Exactly. We're involved in all the profitable sectors now. Anyone would be envious. Nicholas, being the cunning person he is, naturally sees me as a rival."
Theo hesitated but then spoke, "Ms. Cooper, I remember Nicholas used to treat you well."
I replied, "That was when we had no conflicts of interest. Now that we're competitors, how could he treat me the same?"
I rubbed my fingers over my bag and added, "Today, I signed an agreement with Anne. I gave her a sum of money, and she'll leave Wind City within 24 hours to settle in another country, never to return."
"Really?" Theo was surprised and asked, "Anne agreed?"
I looked out at the rapidly passing streets and said, "Nicholas spoke to her. She wouldn't dare refuse. But Anne is still Nicholas's person. By making her leave, I've defied Nicholas, and he won't be happy with me."
"What will you do next?" Theo asked.
I rubbed my aching head and sighed, "What else can I do? Take it one step at a time. Fighting in the business world is not as comfortable as being a lawyer."
Theo smiled and said, "You win some, you lose some."
I smiled wryly and said no more.
Theo parked the car in front of my building, and I hurried upstairs.
Skylar was already in bed under Melissa's care.
Hearing me open the door, Skylar jumped up and hugged me affectionately.
I said, "My sweet little one, I'm back."
I then changed into comfortable clothes and lay down with Skylar.
I gently patted her back to help her sleep.
"Mommy, I'm going to preschool tomorrow. I wonder what it's like," Skylar asked, her big eyes full of curiosity.
"There will be lovely teachers, fun toys, and lots of cute friends. You need to sleep well to have energy for preschool tomorrow," I explained gently.
Skylar looked up, worried. "What if I miss you at preschool?"
I brushed her bangs aside and said softly, "I promise to pick you up every day after school, okay?"
"Great! It's a deal, Mommy!" Skylar kissed my cheeks.
I tucked her in, and she obediently closed her eyes.
