Chapter 63 Don't Make a Sound
Mia's funeral came around fast. That day, a light rain drizzled down, and the damp air made it tough to breathe. Even though I wanted to keep things simple, a lot of people still showed up to pay their respects.
During the farewell ceremony, I stood front and center, taking condolences from the guests. Most of them were strangers to me; I knew they weren't there for me but for my status. Now, I was not only Mrs. Howard, but the CEO of the Cooper Group. I knew I didn't have what it took to run the Cooper Group, but Edward, the man behind me, did, and he put me in this position.
To outsiders, it looked like the Howard Group acquiring the Cooper Group and Edward letting someone from the Cooper family be president was a generous move. For him, it was a win-win. And for me, it wasn't bad either. Being the president in name gave me a chance to get close to the senior management and internal affairs of the Cooper Group. If I worked hard enough, one day, I could really bring the Cooper Group back into my hands.
All the shareholders and top execs from the partner companies came to pay their respects. I knew most of them were there out of respect for the Howard family, and some just wanted to see the show. But none of that mattered to me. As long as I held Edward's hand and sweetly called him "honey," he'd hold my hand and back me up.
At the funeral, I kept my expressions in check. But one person couldn't hold back his tears—David, who was with Daniel. Every time I looked at him, a pang of guilt hit me. Mia died because of me, and yet, for my own secret reasons, I turned her funeral into a performance. Everyone was playing their part, except for David, who showed real emotions.
After the farewell ceremony, the guests slowly left, with only a few hanging around to chat. I headed to the lounge, and as soon as I walked in, a tall figure cornered me against the wall.
"Honey," I whispered.
Edward's eyes narrowed a bit, and his face softened. He pressed me into the corner behind the door, making it impossible for me to move.
I reached out with difficulty and gently touched his cheek. I knew struggling was pointless. What I needed to do was use my gentleness to melt Edward's icy heart.
"You behaved well today," Edward said with a smile.
I lowered my eyes and softly said, "Today is my mother's funeral."
I looked up and smiled, my eyes curving. "Thank you for setting all this up for me. Without you, I couldn't have done anything." I wanted Edward to know I needed him. Only then would he not be suspicious of me.
"Very good." He lifted my chin, making me meet his cold gaze.
I quickly adjusted my expression, looking at Edward with admiration. Suddenly, I stood on tiptoe and kissed his lips.
Edward seemed taken aback by my move. For a second, he was stunned, but then he responded. His hand slid down my back, and I clung to his neck, my body trembling a bit. Being this close to him was something I'd always dreamed of, and I wished time could just freeze. But my heart felt like it was being stabbed by a thousand needles. This was my mom's funeral; I shouldn't be this intimate with Edward.
I snapped back to reality and tried to return to the farewell ceremony. As I took a step, he pulled me back, his fingers tracing my waist. Out of nowhere, he said, "David is really sad today."
I got it—he was wary of David. After all, as David had said, I knew him first, but I chose Edward later. Now that I knew David's feelings for me, I understood that Edward's actions were driven by possessiveness, not genuine concern. He was warning me to stay away from David.
I couldn't let David's feelings mess up my plans, so I moved Edward's hand from my waist to my chest, showing him that I didn't care about David's feelings; I only cared about Edward.
I meant it. From the first time I saw Edward at six years old, I had fallen deeply in love with him, and that hadn't changed in twenty years.
Edward pulled me into the inner room. He pushed me onto the sofa, and his lips suddenly pressed against mine, kissing me urgently. Outside, I heard footsteps and Daniel's voice. I bit my lip and let out a muffled sound. Edward stopped and whispered in my ear, "Don't make a sound; they can hear us outside."
I was super nervous, my whole body tense. Edward noticed and placed his hand on my chest, playing with my body. I tried to push him away several times, but he pressed me down harder, kissing me more urgently. His hands started to roam over my body, first brushing through my hair, then down my back, waist, and finally to my hips.
My body trembled uncontrollably, and I softly reminded him, "I'm wet."
He lifted my dress and slipped his hand into my panties.
"Do you want it?" It seemed he confirmed what I guessed and wanted to take further action.
I grabbed his arms, trying to suppress the sensations in my body. "Today is my mom's funeral," I reminded him softly.
Edward seemed not to hear me and continued to remove my panties. He used my panties to wipe the glistening liquid from his fingers, then stood up and unbuckled his belt.
I understood his intention and knelt on the floor, following his lead. As I pulled down his underwear, his erection sprang up and touched my lips. I gently took it into my mouth, licking and sucking with my tongue.
The closed door acted as a barrier, separating us from David and Daniel outside. It also temporarily isolated me from all the conflicts in the world.
The last time Mia met me, she asked me to drop my knees in front of Edward and apologize. Now, I was having sex with Edward at her funeral. Mia shouldn't blame me, right?
Edward gently stroked my face, and I looked up at him. His gaze was tender, but I knew there was no love in that tenderness, only satisfaction after release. Edward was very pleased with me.
After tidying up our clothes, Edward tied my long hair with my underwear. It was like he was dressing up a doll. At that moment, I was almost certain that when Anne's anus was torn, she must have been with Edward. He was far crazier than I had imagined.
Listening to the silence outside, Edward and I walked out of the inner chamber one after another. Seeing his tall figure, I felt my heart ache. Just as I was about to return to the farewell hall, David called out to me. Edward heard it too and turned to leave. David glared at Edward and said, "Mr. Howard, I need to speak with Diana alone."
