Chapter 88 Protecting You Is What I Should Do

I froze and looked at them.

A blonde girl next to her said, "No doubt, I've seen her photo online. This is the one."

I was taken aback, realizing this might be because of some online rumors. I gathered my courage and asked, "What do you want?"

The leader sneered. "What do we want? Think about what you've done first!"

Edward heard the commotion and turned around. "What are you doing?" he yelled, walking over to me.

The girls seemed startled for a moment but quickly surrounded us again. They started cursing, and from their words, I figured out they were fans of Eric and Alice. They thought I had helped the cheating Alice and wanted to get back at me for their idol, Eric.

Thinking back to the arguments I had with some bloggers online, I felt it was probably these people. I never thought they'd take it this far and find me in real life. I felt nervous and scared, shouting, "Stop! This is illegal!"

They ignored me, not caring about the law. One of them stepped forward and pushed Edward, making him stumble. I angrily shouted, "How can you hit us?"

"This is just the beginning," the leader said, stepping forward again. I felt worried and instinctively wanted to protect Edward.

Edward pulled me behind him, saying, "Diana, stay back." His eyes were calm and determined. He then said to the girls, "I don't want to hit women, but if you keep this up, I'll call the police!"

"You're quite handsome and well-dressed. You must be Edward, right?" the leader said.

Edward lowered his voice, "Since you know me, you should know my status."

"So what if you're rich? Big deal. Today, I'm going to hit you. Girls, let's go!" The group of women surrounded Edward.

Edward worked out regularly. Even when he fought David and Joshua, he never backed down. I wasn't worried he couldn't handle these people.

But as Edward said, he wouldn't hit women and could only dodge. I saw one girl grab him from behind while another bit his arm hard. He cried out in pain, shaking off the girl holding him. I felt a surge of tension, worried Edward would get hurt and angry at the girls' barbaric behavior.

Seeing Edward fighting against many, I was terrified.

"Edward!" I shouted his name, picking up a long branch from the ground and swinging it at the girls. The branch hit one girl's back, and she turned angrily to attack me. Edward, enduring the pain in his arm, rushed to shield me. My eyes welled up with tears, and I shouted at the girls, "Do you have any sense of decency? We'll call the police if you keep this up!"

At that moment, a passerby shouted, "The police are coming."

The delinquent girls scattered and disappeared into the night. I helped Edward up. He had a superficial wound on his forehead and two long cuts on his arm, but luckily, it didn't injure the bone.  I comforted him while helping him to the parking lot.

"Edward, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault," I said, my voice breaking.

I had a real beef with Edward, but I also felt guilty and worried. I never thought those people would track me down because of some online rumors, and I didn't expect Edward to jump in to save me without a second thought.

Edward, wincing from the pain, gently patted my back. "Diana, what are you talking about? You're my wife; it's my job to protect you."

I looked up, and as our eyes met, tears streamed down my face. Edward wiped my tears with the back of his hand, and I said seriously, "Why are you so foolish? There were so many of them, and you just rushed in?" I complained softly.

Edward smiled and said, "I only thought about protecting you at that moment; nothing else mattered."

Hearing his words, I felt a warm feeling surge in my heart.

The driver was shocked to see me helping Edward back. He couldn't believe that in just the time of one meal, his boss had gotten into a fight and was injured. This was Edward, the CEO of the Howard Group. How could he get hurt?

"Mr. Howard, should we go to the hospital?" the driver asked cautiously.

"Yes," I said firmly while tending to Edward's arm.

"No, it's just a minor injury. Going to the hospital would be embarrassing. Take us back to the villa," Edward said.

"Yes, sir." The driver said no more and started the car.

When we arrived at the Howard Villa, Anne was sitting on the sofa painting her nails. Seeing me help Edward in, she screamed, "Edward, what happened? Are you hurt?"

She rushed over, pushing me aside to support Edward. Her tears kept falling, making me feel even worse.

"Anne, I'm fine, just a scratch," Edward said, reaching out to stroke Anne's hair, and comforting her.

"Edward, does it hurt? Let me apply some ointment," Anne said, helping Edward to the sofa and then pretending to professionally treat his wounds. Edward winced in pain under her care.

I couldn't help but step forward. "Anne, let me do it."

Anne suddenly looked up, glaring at me fiercely. "If it weren't for you, Edward wouldn't be hurt. Diana, I hate you."

I was shocked by her sudden outburst and tried to calm myself. "I know Edward got hurt because of me, but the situation was urgent, and I had no choice."

"It's all your bad luck that hurt him!" Anne's voice was choked with sobs.

I couldn't suppress my anger any longer and raised my voice. "Anne, have you said enough? What happened today was just an accident."

Anne suddenly threw herself into Edward's arms, crying, "Edward, look, Diana is bullying me. How could she do this to me?"

I was stunned by her sudden crying, standing there not knowing what to do.

"That's enough, Diana!" Edward yelled at me. "If it weren't for you, my relationship with Anne wouldn't be so strained, and my parents wouldn't oppose Anne living here."

My heart felt like it was being pounded by a hammer, shrinking uncontrollably. Was Edward saying I was unnecessary?

My eyes filled with tears. In just one night, Edward had gone from speaking to me with the utmost tenderness, promising to protect me, to hurling harsh words at me.
