Chapter 436 The Howling Sound of Wind and Rain

I clutched the music box tightly, watching Edward as he geared up to chase after the man in black again. Desperately, I shouted, "Edward, we got the music box back! Don't go after him! We've been lucky enough to get it back, there's no need to take more risks!"

Edward glanced back at me briefly, his teeth clenched as he spat out, "That jerk is too cocky. I can't let him get away today!"

His eyes burned with a fury I had never seen before, and his stubbornness told me he wouldn't stop. Without another word, Edward charged in the direction where the man in black had disappeared.

I sighed in frustration. How could I let him face danger alone? Despite my legs aching from running and the constraints of my dress, I quickened my pace to follow him.

As I stepped into the abandoned freight yard, the stench of decay grew stronger, making me wrinkle my nose adapt to the awful environment. The dim light cast large shadows between the shipping containers, with unknown dangers lurking in every dark corner.

Edward weaved through the maze of pathways, pausing at each intersection to listen for any signs of the man in black. I finally caught up to him, panting heavily, and tried to persuade him again, "We really should go back. The cops might be here any minute. Let them handle it."

Edward shook his head, his gaze resolute. "No way. The way he acted just now, he's clearly got something up his sleeve. I need to find out what he's up to and if someone else is behind this."

Just then, the previously clear night sky suddenly darkened as thick clouds gathered rapidly, hanging low. Large raindrops began to fall without warning, drenching us instantly. I gasped, instinctively hugging the music box closer to shield it from the rain. Water streamed down my face, blurring my vision.

Edward was momentarily stunned by the sudden downpour but quickly regained his composure, continuing his pursuit without hesitation. The rain intensified, quickly forming puddles on the ground. Each step splashed water everywhere, and my dress became heavier, dragging me down and making it difficult to move.

I jogged, keeping my eyes fixed on Edward's silhouette ahead, carefully avoiding the scattered debris on the ground to avoid tripping. The wind howled, sounding like ghostly wails, sending chills down my spine.

"Edward, wait for me!" I shouted, but my voice was swallowed by the raging storm.

As I rounded a puddle, I slipped and nearly fell. In my panic, I grabbed onto a nearby container to steady myself. When I looked up again, Edward's figure had vanished into the rain and darkness.

"Edward!" I screamed, but the only response was the howling wind and the relentless drumming of rain on the containers. My heart raced as I desperately followed the direction he had run, rainwater filling my shoes and making each step heavy and difficult. In the maze of containers, I searched frantically but couldn't find any trace of him.

Everything around me was shrouded in rain, becoming blurry and unfamiliar. Fear began to creep in as I clutched the music box, my only source of comfort. I didn't know whether to keep going or wait for the police. But the thought of Edward facing danger alone made me grit my teeth and continue searching.

My phone suddenly vibrated, the eerie blue light of the unknown number cutting through the darkness like a sharp blade.

I took a deep breath to steady my racing heart before answering the call.

The sound of the storm and static filled my ear, followed by a voice altered by a voice changer, mixed with the unsettling click of gears turning, like a whisper from the depths of hell. "The metal wall of container seven is rusted through. Five minutes ago, Edward kicked the door open, breaking two hinges."

I quickly scanned my surroundings, the wind howling madly and the rain pouring down in torrents. The large raindrops pounded on the containers, creating a deafening noise. The area was eerily empty, with only the hidden danger lurking like a beast ready to pounce. I could feel my breath quicken, my heart pounding in my chest, each beat echoing in my ribs as if trying to break free.

I pressed my back against a container, the cold metal seeping through my clothes and making me shiver. My hands gripped the phone tightly, my knuckles turning white from the pressure.

Despite the fear filling my heart, I mustered the courage to shout, "Jeffrey, where are you hiding, controlling everything like a coward? Do you think you can get away with this?"

My voice trembled slightly in the wind, but I tried to make it sound strong and determined.

There was a sound of papers rustling on the other end, eerily out of place against the storm's backdrop, making my skin crawl and my hair stand on end.

"Impressive, Diana. You can read micro-expressions well. You really are capable."

The voice changer stuttered, accidentally letting out a malicious chuckle. The sinister laugh echoed in the storm, sending a chill from my feet to my head.

A thunderclap boomed, shaking the ground and making my ears ring. The only streetlight in the yard flickered, its dim light wavering. Fear gripped my heart, my legs weakening, almost causing me to collapse.

But my strong will and concern for Edward made me react quickly. I steadied myself against a container, trying to draw strength from it.

The phone emitted a sharp beep, characteristic of surveillance equipment. "Right now, Edward is using his jacket to stop his sister's bleeding. The old scar on his left pinky, from when he shielded her from a bottle cap, do you remember?"

I suppressed my fear and anger, keeping my breathing steady, and asked coldly, "What do you want? Don't think you can control everything!"

Jeffrey was silent for a moment before speaking again, his voice through the changer sending a chill down my spine, like it came from the deep sea. "I just want to see you tear apart your so-called dignity. Watching you break down, seeing your pain, that's the fun part. Ha ha."
