Chapter 322 Protecting Diana and Skylar
Seeing Skylar getting more and more upset, her face turning red and her hands flailing to keep Edward away, I had to step in.
"Alright, you've seen her. Skylar's safe. But she doesn't want to see you. You should head back to the hospital and continue your treatment," I said.
Edward's eyes showed a hint of reluctance as he softly murmured, "Skylar, I'm sorry."
Skylar's trembling body instantly tensed up. The calm she had barely managed to regain shattered once more. She clung tightly to my shirt, her face pale, and began to wail, her cries filled with fear and helplessness.
Edward awkwardly scratched his head and said, "Diana, I'm sorry."
I waved my hand impatiently, my only thought being to get Skylar away from this unsettling place as quickly as possible.
Just then, Alaric came running over, his chest heaving from the sprint. "Diana, I just heard about what happened and rushed over. Are you and Skylar okay?" he asked.
Edward turned sharply at the sound of Alaric's voice, a flash of hostility in his eyes. "What are you doing here? This is a family matter!" he exclaimed.
Seeing this, Alaric stepped forward, positioning himself between me and Edward. He stared Edward down and said, "I'm here because I'm worried about Diana and Skylar. Look at Skylar. Who do you think is to blame for this?"
"You!" Edward was left speechless by Alaric's reprimand.
Ignoring Edward, Alaric turned his attention to me, his eyes scanning over Skylar, who was still crying in my arms. "What happened to Skylar?" he asked.
I gently patted Skylar's back, trying to soothe her, and looked at Alaric with weary eyes. "Skylar was just found. She was scared and hasn't calmed down since," I replied.
I sighed softly and then coldly addressed Edward. "I'm taking Skylar to the hospital for a check-up. Do you need a ride?"
Edward's eyes darted between me, Skylar, and Alaric before he finally shook his head in defeat. "No, I'll go back to the hospital on my own." With that, Edward signaled to an orderly, who came over to help him leave.
Alaric watched Edward's retreating figure and muttered, "I can't believe he had the nerve to show up."
Even as Edward disappeared from view, Skylar continued to sob in my arms. She buried her face in my neck, her voice trembling. "Mommy, I'm scared."
I held her tightly, whispering soothingly, "Don't be scared, sweetie. I'm here. I'll take you away from here."
Yet Skylar's cries didn't stop.
"Skylar, look what I have," Alaric said, pulling a lollipop from behind his back like a magician and waving it in front of her.
Skylar's tears halted instantly at the sight of the candy. "Candy," she said in surprise, reaching for the lollipop in Alaric's hand.Alaric took the chance to take Skylar from me and handed her the candy. "You've been holding her for so long. You must be tired. Let me hold her for a bit," he said.
A wave of gratitude washed over me. "Thanks, Alaric. I don't know how long she would have cried if it weren't for you." I rubbed my sore arms and smiled wryly.
Alaric smiled back. "No need to thank me. Taking care of you two is the least I can do."
He gestured toward the door. "Let's go. I'll take you home." Warmth filled my heart as I nodded and followed Alaric. Skylar's mood improved with the candy, and Alaric's jokes soon had her laughing in his arms.
We reached the car quickly. Alaric gently handed Skylar back to me and got into the driver's seat. I settled into the backseat with Skylar, who clutched the lollipop in one hand and my shirt in the other.
As the car smoothly headed towards the hospital, Skylar, exhausted from crying, began to doze off. I gently stroked her hair and whispered, "Sleep, baby. I'm here."
Skylar nestled closer, finding a comfortable spot, and soon her breathing became steady as she drifted into a peaceful sleep.
I kissed her cheek, hoping that a restful sleep in my arms would chase away the day's fears for my three-year-old.
Remembering how much time Skylar typically spent with Melissa, I decided to send her a text, asking if she could meet us at the hospital.
At that time, Alaric glanced at me through the rearview mirror, our eyes meeting. He gave a slight nod, offering silent comfort before focusing back on the road.
Breaking the silence, I said, "Recently, someone posted fake videos about Skylar online. It caused a lot of trouble for the police."
Alaric frowned. "How could that happen?"
I shook my head with a wry smile. "The internet is a messy and complicated place. Some people will do anything for a bit of attention."
Alaric thought for a moment before saying, "Have you considered clearing things up through some channels? Maybe get some reputable media to speak out or do a live stream yourself?"
I sighed, looking at the sleeping Skylar. "I'm worried it might affect her. She's so young. I don't want her caught up in all this."
Alaric's voice was firm. "That's exactly why you can't back down. If you keep avoiding it, the rumors will only get worse. We need to take the initiative to protect you and Skylar."
His words filled me with a warm resolve. I said, "Alright, I'll do a live stream to explain everything soon."
The car continued smoothly towards the hospital, and we didn't speak again for the rest of the journey.
We arrived at the hospital, the automatic doors sliding open to the familiar scent of disinfectant.
