Chapter 298 How Naive

The teacher noticed what was happening and strolled over with a grin. "You guys have such a great bond. Even though it's Skylar's dad's first time here, he really brought some energy to the class."

I was about to explain, but Alaric just gave a knowing smile and stayed quiet.

Later, during the interactive games, Skylar totally forgot about me and teamed up with Alaric to tackle all the tasks.

On the way home, Skylar snuggled up to me and said, "Mommy, I had so much fun today."

I hugged Skylar tightly and whispered, "I'm glad you had fun, Skylar. I signed you up for preschool, so you'll get to meet more friends soon."

Skylar's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really? Mommy, I want to go to preschool and make friends."

Alaric, driving, overheard our conversation and looked concerned. "Isn't Skylar a bit young for preschool?" he asked.

I looked over at Alaric and let out a sigh. "I don't want to let her go either, but preschool will give her a more structured routine and help her make friends. Plus, I'm so busy with work that I can't be there for her all the time. I hope she'll grow up happy and healthy with her new friends."

Alaric parked the car in front of my apartment complex and turned to us with a gentle smile. "We're here."

Skylar eagerly unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over to Alaric's seat. In her sweet, childlike voice, she said, "Mr. Kingsley, thank you for singing, dancing, and playing games with me. I had so much fun." She then gave Alaric a big hug.

Alaric gently patted Skylar's head. "I'm glad you had fun, Skylar. I'll play with you again sometime."

I smiled at Alaric. "Thank you so much for today. Not only did you pick me up from the hospital, but you also played those silly games with Skylar. I really appreciate it."

Alaric waved his hand dismissively. "I'm happy to be part of your lives. How could I think it's silly?"

After saying goodbye to Alaric, Skylar and I went upstairs. Just as I was about to unlock the door, my phone rang from my bag. I fumbled to find it, and when I saw "Joshua" on the screen, a sense of unease washed over me.

"Joshua, what's up?" I tried to keep my voice steady.

Joshua's calm voice came through the phone. "Diana, Anne, who's in custody, wants to see you." Hearing Anne's name, I felt anger welling up inside me. "She wants to see me? What on earth does she want?"

Joshua paused, choosing his words carefully. "We're not sure of her intentions, but she insists on seeing you and says she has something important to tell you."

"Would meeting her help with the investigation?" I weighed the pros and cons.

Joshua seemed to sense my concern and replied reassuringly, "The police think that if she has important information, it could be beneficial for you and the case.""Fine, I'll see her," I replied coldly.

"Great! We'll make sure you're safe and nothing happens to you," Joshua said, sounding relieved.

"Mommy, what's wrong?" Skylar tugged at my clothes, sensing something was off.

I patted her head and forced a smile, signaling that everything was fine.

The detention center was far from the city, so I left Skylar with Melissa and drove there. On the way, I couldn't stop thinking about Anne's hateful glare. How could she not hate me? The closer I got to the detention center, the more uneasy I felt.

Anne sat across from me, her hair disheveled, her face pale.

"You finally came." Anne broke the silence, her voice hoarse.

I suppressed my disgust and said, "Say what you need to say. I don't have time to waste."

Anne sneered. "Diana, did you think putting me in here would make you safe? How naive!"

Hearing "naive" from Anne made me even more annoyed. I remarked, "Really?"

"I've contacted Nicholas. He'll get me out soon." Anne leaned back, looking smug. She continued, "If you apologize now and return the Howard Group to me, I might forgive you."

Her attitude seemed even more childish to me. I replied calmly, "You think Nicholas will risk everything for you as Edward did? Stop deluding yourself."

Hearing this, Anne remained silent for a moment and then laughed. "Don't be ungrateful, Diana. You'll regret missing this chance."

Her laughter echoed in the small room, sending chills down my spine.

Just then, a police officer rushed in. "Anne, you're being released."

He then unlocked her handcuffs.

Anne stood up abruptly, almost knocking over the table. She stretched and walked over to me. Due to our height difference, she had to straighten up to look me in the eye.

"See, Diana? I told you I'd get out. Even if Edward can't save me, there are plenty of others who will. That's the charm of a mature woman." With that, she strutted out the door.

I watched her leave, my fists clenching. I couldn't stand the thought of her getting away with it.

Fuming, I knocked on Joshua's office door. "Joshua, you're just letting her go?" I asked.

Joshua stood by the window, looking at the shooting range in the distance. After a long silence, he said, "Diana, I understand how you feel, but we're under pressure from higher-ups. We had no choice."

"With Nicholas backing her, is the law powerless against her?" I gritted my teeth, feeling frustrated.

Joshua turned to me, trying to reassure me. "Don't worry. We've got people watching her. If she tries to hurt you again, I'll be the first to arrest her."

Seeing Joshua's determined look, I calmed down. "Alright, I'll be careful."
