Chapter 438 Don't Be Impulsive
Luckily, the heavy rain stopped a fire from breaking out; otherwise, we all would've been toast.
After the chaos settled, a charred USB drive somehow ended up at my feet. Without thinking, I bent down to grab it.
"Don't touch that USB drive!"
Edward lunged forward, grabbing my wrist and shouting hoarsely.
His breath was ragged and tinged with blood."There's definitely something off about it."
Suddenly, Edward's gaze shifted past my shoulder, fixating on the shadows at the warehouse entrance.
Following his line of sight, I saw a figure emerge from the darkness—it was the man in black who had lured us here!
He held a strange-looking weapon, and as he approached, the air seemed to be sucked away by an invisible force, making it hard for me to breathe.
My heart pounded against my ribs, my legs felt weak, and I instinctively stepped back, pressing close to Edward.
But the man in black didn't attack us. He stopped about ten feet away, glaring at us for a moment before turning and leaving.
My phone vibrated violently in my pocket, a new message with a surveillance screenshot.
Jeffrey was slumped in a chair in the control room, the screen wall showing various angles of the dock, the timestamp in the corner reading five minutes ago.
The note simply said, [Final Act.]
I showed the phone to Edward. "Look, this is Jeffrey's situation. What does 'Final Act' mean?"
Edward's brow furrowed as he pondered.
The rain had lessened, and I finally heard Anne's painful moans nearby.
She had been curled up by the steel frame, now clutching her abdomen, her body convulsing uncontrollably. Her forehead was drenched in sweat, mixing with the rain and blood on the ground.
The last remaining earring in her hair glinted weakly, as if trembling with her pain.
I quickly knelt to check on Anne. When my fingers touched her abdomen, a hot, sticky sensation hit me—her blood had soaked through her clothes.
Anne's body jerked as if shocked by electricity, a more agonizing scream escaping her throat, making my hair stand on end. Edward's jacket was still draped over her, but it couldn't keep her warm anymore.
Seeing Anne's pale, weak face, I was desperate. I had only one thought, 'We must get her out of here and find help.'
For some reason, I no longer felt any hatred towards Anne; I just wanted her to survive.
"We can't wait any longer. We need to get Anne out of here."
I stood up, trying to help her up. The chains on her feet clanked loudly.
"Damn chains! Why are they so tight?"
I cursed under my breath, fumbling with the chains, trying to find a way to unlock them, but they were solid and wouldn't budge.
"Edward, help me."
Edward didn't move.
Anne, barely conscious, managed to whisper, "Forget me, save Edward first."
I turned to Edward, shocked and worried by the severity of his arm injury. I was at a loss, just standing there, watching them both in dire straits.
I steadied myself, my voice breaking, "No! I'm saving both of you!"
Edward, dragging his injured body, slowly moved towards us. He knelt down, examining the chain's lock.
"This lock is complicated. Without tools, it's hard to open."
He looked up, despair in his eyes.
I spotted a rusty iron rod nearby.
"Got it!" My eyes lit up as I ran to grab the rod, then used it to pry the chain from the ground. The rod screeched against the floor, sparks flying. One, two... my arms ached from the effort, but I didn't stop. Finally, with a snap, the chain loosened.
Ignoring my fatigue, I helped Anne up. Edward joined, using his uninjured arm to support her. We slowly made our way to the warehouse door.
Anne's bare feet stepped on shattered glass from the explosion, causing her to moan in pain, tightening my heart each time.
Finally, we saw a sliver of light from outside the warehouse—hope was within reach.
Metal clanged above us, and three smoke grenades rolled to the ground, filling the space with thick white fog. Edward pulled me into a container gap, his bloody hand covering my mouth.
Boots crunched over the glass, a voice shouting, "Find the girl, the USB drive must be with her!"
The voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it.
Flashlight beams swept across the metal, casting blinding spots.
"It's Anne, take her back!"
The rough voice brushed past my ear, and I realized it was Sebastian. When the smoke grenades fell, Anne hadn't followed us.
"It's Nicholas's men. He once sent them to guard me, but they were really spying on me. Anne won't fare well with them!"
Panicked, I tried to break free from Edward to find Anne, but he held me tight, his bloody hand burning my face.
"Don't be reckless, going out there is suicide!"
Edward hissed in my ear, his breath weak but resolute.
Tears blurred my vision as I looked towards the fog where Anne had disappeared, filled with guilt.
"Isn't she your sister? How can you leave her?" I whispered, my voice breaking.
Edward hugged me tightly from behind. "I know, but we have no weapons. How can we fight them?"
Flashlight beams danced on the container, like deadly trackers, leaving us nowhere to hide.
I felt Edward's heartbeat against my back.
When the footsteps finally faded, Edward wrapped his bleeding arm with his tie. He used his uninjured arm to pull out a small recording device from a waterproof bag, its red light blinking in the fog.
"What is this?"
I was surprised, more confused than anything.
