Chapter 310 Edward Seems Suspicious
The park, once buzzing with life, now felt like a ghost town. The gate hung ajar, creaking in the night breeze, sending shivers down my spine.
We rushed inside. The fountain was off, and the dark pool looked like it went on forever. The silence was deafening, broken only by our hurried footsteps and the occasional chirp of insects. Moonlight cast eerie shadows, making everything look even creepier.
"Skylar! Skylar!" I yelled, waving my phone's flashlight around.
My voice echoed into the darkness, but nothing came back.
Suddenly, Theo pointed to a nearby bush, his voice shaky. "Hey, isn't that Skylar's balloon?"
In the dim light, I spotted a familiar red balloon tangled in the branches. It was the one Edward had given Skylar. I dashed over and found a tiny shoe lying in the grass next to it. "It's Skylar's shoe! They were definitely here."
I clutched my hair, screaming in desperation. "Skylar, where are you? I'm here to get you."
Wilmer and Theo rushed over to help me up, but I was too weak, paralyzed by fear and despair. Skylar's sweet smile kept flashing in my mind, along with all the dangers she might be facing. I was drowning in pain and guilt.
Even though it was late, none of us were ready to give up.
Theo called a few reliable guys from work. We went back to the bushes where we found Skylar's shoe. Our flashlights flickered in the darkness, making the insects go quiet.
"Skylar! Skylar!" Our voices echoed through the night, but only silence answered.
"What are you doing?" A strong but old voice suddenly called out, followed by a harsh beam of light hitting me.
Startled, I turned to see a park ranger giving us a stern look.
"Sir, we're looking for a little girl named Skylar," I said urgently. "She's only three and was taken after dinner. We found her shoe nearby."
The ranger's frown softened a bit. "So you're looking for a child. No wonder you're here so late. I did see a middle-aged man carrying a little girl pass by. Thought it was odd for someone to be in the park this late."
Theo stepped forward, his voice anxious. "Sir, do you know which way they went? This child means everything to us. We're desperate."
The ranger shook his head. "Didn't pay much attention. Maybe they left because there's nothing to see here at night."
Before he finished, the old ranger walked away, his flashlight bobbing in the dark.
We exchanged glances and kept searching, our flashlights sweeping through the darkness as we called out Skylar's name.
But the whole night passed with no luck. Exhaustion, despair, and helplessness washed over me again, but I didn't dare stop, didn't dare rest, fearing that if I did, I'd never see Skylar again. As the sun came up, we still had no clue where Skylar was.
Theo, dragging his feet, came over to me and said, "Diana, this isn't working. We need a new plan. Can you ask Detective Joshua for help? The cops have way more resources and experience. They'll be better at this than us."
I looked up, hesitating, and stammered, "But we don't even know if Skylar was really kidnapped. Isn't it too soon to call the police?"
Theo sighed, clearly frustrated. "Does it matter at this point? Skylar's been missing for hours. Every minute counts. We can't keep stumbling around in the dark. We need the pros."
He was right.
I bit my lip and finally nodded. "Okay, I'll go find him now. You guys keep searching around here. Maybe we'll get lucky."
Ignoring my exhaustion from a sleepless night, I got up and headed to the police station.
When I arrived, it was still early morning.
The cool breeze helped clear my head a bit. I kept looking inside the police station, every second of waiting felt like torture.
I kept checking my phone, hoping for a message from Theo, but nothing.
As the sun climbed higher, cops started showing up at the station.
Every time I saw an officer, I rushed over, hoping it was Joshua, but I kept getting disappointed.
I went back to my spot, waiting, my legs aching, but I didn't dare sit down, afraid I'd miss Joshua.
Just when I was about to lose hope, I finally saw a familiar face.
It was Joshua! He was in his crisp uniform, walking steadily towards the station.
He noticed me right away, his eyes filled with surprise. "Diana, what's going on? Why are you here so early? What happened?"
I rushed to him, my voice trembling with tears. "Joshua, please help me. Skylar might have been taken by Edward, and I can't reach him. I don't know what to do. You're the only one who can save her."
Joshua replied, "Is that so? Don't worry, come to my office and tell me everything."
I followed him into his office and spilled everything about Skylar's disappearance. After I finished, I looked at him anxiously.
Joshua listened, frowned slightly, and then said calmly, "Don't worry. We've handled cases like this before. Since Skylar disappeared in the park, there must be some clues. I'll have someone check the surveillance footage."
He picked up the phone and started coordinating the search.
After making the arrangements, Joshua turned to me. "This Edward sounds suspicious. He might be using Skylar to get back at you. Don't worry, I'll do everything I can to find her."
Watching him organize everything so methodically, a spark of hope ignited in my heart. I silently prayed that he would find Skylar quickly and put an end to this nightmare.
