Chapter 393 Lucas's Concerns

Lucas and Lila exchanged a look, Lucas trying to play it cool.

"Look, Diana," Lucas said, "I get what you're saying. We've all been doing our own thing for a while now. Even though he's my dad, our business philosophies never really lined up. This project handover is my way of moving forward with my career. As long as it doesn't mess with his main interests, I doubt he'll get too involved. Plus, he's always respected Lila's work at the law firm. After I leave, he shouldn't give her a hard time."

I took a deep breath and said, "Still, we can't let our guard down."

Everyone nodded.

Lila grabbed a notebook from the table, breaking the silence.

"Alright, let's not dwell on this," she said. "Diana, let's talk about your investigation into the Griffin Group and Nicholas's scandal. Maybe we can find a way in."

In the living room, everyone's focus shifted back to the main issue.

I remembered why I was there and quickly said, "I do have something urgent, but I'm more worried about your safety."

I then explained the problems David and Edward were having with the real estate project, the obstacles from the Griffin Group and Nicholas, and the plan to have Lila dig into the scandal to find evidence.

As I talked, Lucas and Alaric listened closely, occasionally exchanging looks, while Lila frowned, deep in thought.

When I finished, Alaric said seriously, "Diana, this is really tough. The Griffin Group is deeply entrenched, and Nicholas has a lot of connections in the industry. One wrong move could not only tank the project but also have serious consequences for everyone involved."

Lucas added, "If we can find solid evidence, it would be a game-changer for the project. But it would be really risky for Lila. This would hit my dad's core interests."

I responded, "Yeah, you had a tech project that Nicholas might have been interested in, but since you moved it, he's probably pissed. If Lila starts digging into his scandal now, things could get messy."

I started to regret wanting to give this task to Lila.

Lila stayed quiet for a moment before saying, "Diana, Lucas, I want to take this on. From a legal standpoint, their illegal activities can't be ignored. If I'm careful, it should be okay."

She looked at Lucas and Alaric. "What do you guys think?"

Lucas quickly stood up. "No way, I don't agree. Anything that puts you in danger is off the table."

His eyes were filled with worry, fixed on Lila as if he wanted to shield her from everything.

Lila stood up and softly hugged Lucas's shoulders, her voice gentle but resolute. "Honey, I know you're worried about me, but this is about my professional principles. As a lawyer, if I ignore illegal activities, how can I keep doing this job and live with myself?"

Lila had always upheld strong professional ethics, believing in the inviolability of justice.Alaric, who had been sitting quietly, finally spoke up. "Lila makes a good point. But practically speaking, if Lila directly investigates Nicholas, the risk is extremely high. Nicholas is ruthless and domineering. If he realizes Lila is investigating him, who knows what extreme measures he might take in retaliation."

Alaric's analytical mind always took the practical implications into account.

At this, I quickly added, "Lila, I appreciate your willingness to help, but I can't let you risk your safety for this. Let's think of a better way."

I wasn't a selfish person, and Lila was my most important friend.

Lucas's brows furrowed, and his breathing grew heavy. He knew Lila was driven by a strong sense of justice, always ready to fight against unfairness. But the thought of her facing danger made him uneasy.

Lila looked at Lucas's pained and tormented expression, and her tone softened even more. "Honey, I have an idea. I won't directly participate in the frontline investigation. I'll have experienced, capable lawyers from the firm handle it. I'll provide legal support and guidance from behind the scenes. This way, the risk is greatly reduced. How about that?"

Lila's thoughtful compromise showed her careful consideration.

Lucas looked at Lila seriously. After a long pause, he gently brushed a strand of hair from her face. He replied, "Alright, we'll do it that way. But you must promise not to put yourself in danger. If there's any sign of trouble, you must stop immediately."

Lila smiled and nodded. "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing."

She then opened her notebook and quickly jotted down key points. She said, "Diana, organize the scattered clues you've collected and send them to me. I'll assemble a special investigation team from the firm and get them started right away."

Lucas gently held Lila's hand, his eyes full of concern. "Be safe. No matter how late it is, let me know you're okay every day."

Lila squeezed his hand and smiled warmly. "I will. You take care, too, and don't overwork yourself chasing your dreams."

Alaric adjusted his glasses, his expression contemplative. He remarked, "From a business perspective, once the Griffin Group and Nicholas realize they're being investigated, they'll likely take countermeasures. So be cautious."

I nodded repeatedly, filled with gratitude. "Thank you all on behalf of David and Edward. I'll go back and organize the clues with them to ensure nothing is missed for Lila."

With many tasks still needing attention, I hurriedly said goodbye to Lila and headed back to the office.

Just as I reached the gate, I heard hurried footsteps behind me.

"Diana, wait!" Alaric's voice called out.

I stopped in my tracks and turned around to see Alaric running toward me, slightly out of breath.

"Alaric, what's going on?" I looked at him, puzzled.

Alaric opened his mouth as if to say something but hesitated. His eyes searched my face before finally settling on my eyes.
