Chapter 305 A Peaceful Life
Melissa quietly pushed open the bedroom door and tiptoed in, whispering, "There's a big guy named Wilmer knocking outside, asking if this is Ms. Cooper's house. Diana, did you upset someone?"
She looked worried.
I shook my head and sighed, "He's a bodyguard my godfather sent to 'protect' me, but really, he's here to keep tabs on me. I managed to shake him off, but he caught up so quickly. You stay with Skylar; I'll go talk to him."
"Be careful," Melissa said, always concerned about me even though she wasn't savvy in business matters.
Listening to Skylar's steady breathing, I quietly left the room. Today's schedule was packed, and just when I had a moment to relax, my nerves were on edge again. Wilmer's tall figure stood in the foyer. When he saw me, he immediately straightened up, his face showing the usual respect but with a hint of stubbornness.
"Ms. Cooper, finally, you're here," Wilmer's deep voice echoed in the quiet living room.
I looked at him coldly, with a hint of sarcasm. "What, I need protection in my own home? My godfather is really thoughtful, isn't he?"
Wilmer's expression faltered slightly but quickly returned to normal. "Ms. Cooper, I'm just following orders. Please don't make it hard for me."
"Following orders?" I laughed coldly. "You guys just don't trust me and want to monitor my every move. What could possibly happen to me in my own home?"
Wilmer was silent for a moment, then slowly said, "Ms. Cooper, you know Mr. Jackson's temper. He's worried about your safety. Having an extra person around is always good."
I waved my hand impatiently. "Enough with the excuses. I don't need protection. You can go back."
Wilmer looked troubled. "Ms. Cooper, if you don't let me stay, I can't report back."
I thought for a moment, my gaze falling on Wilmer, my tone softening a bit. "Look, my house is filled with women, and it's really not convenient for you to stay here as a man. Don't just hang around. Why not head back for tonight? If my godfather gets upset, I'll handle it."
Wilmer hesitated but eventually nodded. "Alright, Ms. Cooper. If you need anything, contact me anytime."
Wilmer bowed deeply and turned to leave. As I watched Wilmer walk away, my worries didn't ease at all. Suddenly, a brilliant idea flashed in my mind.
"Wilmer," I called out just as he was about to leave.
"Ms. Cooper, any instructions?" Wilmer turned back, his voice emotionless.
"Tomorrow is Skylar's first day of preschool. Go to Sunny Meadows Kindergarten early in the morning," I assigned Wilmer a task. "From now on, you and Melissa will take Skylar to preschool together."
A hint of hesitation flashed in Wilmer's eyes. He scratched his head and said, "Ms. Cooper, is that appropriate? My main task is to protect you."
I pretended to be angry. "Protecting Skylar is just as important. Are you going to disobey my orders?"
Wilmer looked a bit nervous at my question. "But Mr. Jackson gave me specific instructions..."
I patiently explained, "Skylar is still young, and I can't help but worry. With Melissa alone, I'm afraid something might go wrong. If you're there, I'll feel much more at ease."Wilmer thought for a moment, then finally nodded. "Alright, Ms. Cooper. Since you insist, I'll follow your orders."
Hearing this, I let out a sigh of relief and smiled gratefully. "Skylar's safety is in your hands. Just keep me posted if anything happens."
Wilmer straightened up and saluted. "Yes, Ms. Cooper! I'll take care of it."
With that, Wilmer turned and left.
The next morning, just as dawn broke, Skylar pulled me out of bed, eager to go to school.
Seeing Skylar's sleepy but excited face made my heart melt. After quickly helping her get ready, we headed out.
The morning air was still a bit chilly. I pulled Skylar's collar up, leaving only her big, bright eyes visible.
As we reached downstairs, we saw Wilmer already waiting.
Wilmer approached us immediately, his face showing the usual respect.
"Good morning, Ms. Cooper," Wilmer greeted.
I nodded slightly in response, noticing the dew on Wilmer's clothes. Had he been standing there all night?
Skylar hid behind me, curiously peeking at Wilmer, and whispered, "Mom, who is he?"
I smiled and patted Skylar's head. "This is Wilmer. He and Melissa will take care of you and take you to school."
On the way, Skylar chirped like a happy little bird, talking non-stop about her thoughts on preschool. Once she got comfortable with Wilmer, she bombarded him with all sorts of questions. Wilmer, though a bit awkward, patiently answered each one.
Watching their interaction, I couldn't help but think, 'If only this were a real father-daughter scene, how beautiful it would be!'
At the preschool entrance, many parents and children were already lining up. I knelt down, adjusted Skylar's clothes, and softly said, "Skylar, listen to your teachers and get along with the other kids, okay?"
Skylar nodded vigorously, gave me a kiss on the cheek, and skipped into the preschool.
Watching Skylar's figure disappear into the building, I turned to leave, feeling a bit uneasy with Wilmer following me. I could only pretend he didn't exist.
Days like this passed quickly, and before I knew it, half a year had gone by. Gradually, I seemed to get used to this routine.
Since Skylar started preschool, I had relatively fixed times to fully immerse myself in the busy company affairs. However, with Theo taking the branch company away from the Cooper Group, I lost a valuable assistant and had to handle everything myself.
No matter how busy I was, the afternoon when preschool ended was always a sacred moment for me. I would find a way to pick up Skylar.
One day, the company had a crucial negotiation that would determine its future. I had to arrange for Melissa and Wilmer to pick Skylar up from preschool, and I planned to join them afterward.
Finally, the tough negotiation ended. Without resting, I rushed to the preschool.
The moment Skylar saw me, her eyes lit up, and a bright smile spread across her face. Like a joyful little deer, she ran towards me and jumped into my arms. After cuddling with Skylar on the playground for a while, I held her hand and started walking home.
As we passed a corner, Skylar suddenly exclaimed, "Mom, look! There's a balloon seller over there. They're so pretty!"
