Chapter 287 Skylar Cannot Be Without a Father
Alaric shot me a look, waiting for me to chime in. When I stayed quiet, he turned back to Edward and said, "If Diana's got a problem, she can speak up herself. Right now, the Howard Group's in deep trouble, and Diana's got to handle it. She doesn't have time to waste here with you."
Edward's face showed a flicker of surprise at the mention of the Howard Group's trouble, followed by a mix of emotions. He instinctively stepped forward, like he wanted to say something, but Alaric put out his arm to stop him.
"What happened to the Howard Group? Maybe I can help," Edward said, his earlier hostility replaced by concern.
Alaric stared coldly at Edward and said, "When you walked out on the Howard Group and Diana, you cut ties with them. Why humiliate yourself now?"
Edward's face flushed slightly, but he patiently explained, "I'm familiar with the Howard Group's business. Maybe I could reach out to some past partners to help us through this tough time." "What do you think, Diana?" Edward asked hopefully.
Watching them argue, I felt a wave of frustration. The past and present tangled in my mind, creating a chaotic mess.
I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples, saying, "Edward, I really don't have the time to discuss this right now. The people at the office are still waiting for me. Please, just go. We can talk another time."
Edward looked like he wanted to argue, but seeing my anxious expression, he held back.
Alaric, maybe trying to provoke Edward, leaned in close to my ear and said softly, "Diana, let's go. The company needs us."
Edward's eyes burned with anger and jealousy at Alaric's intimate gesture. His hands clenched into fists, and his face was a mask of rage.
He glared at Alaric, as if trying to pierce through him, silently thinking, 'How dare Alaric get so close to Diana and whisper in her ear?'
Suddenly, Edward pushed past Alaric and grabbed my arm, his voice trembling, "Diana, please, give me another chance. I know I messed up. I'll be good to you and Skylar. I can't live without you."
Seeing Edward almost in tears, I couldn't help but feel moved.
His increasingly frantic behavior soon drew the attention of the people around us. The parking lot security also noticed the commotion and quickly approached.
An older security guard frowned and said sternly, "Sir, please calm down."
The onlookers began to murmur among themselves.
But Edward seemed oblivious to their comments, still holding onto my hand. He said, "Diana, look at me. I've really changed. Please don't leave me."
Edward's grip made it hard for me to stand. The security guards, seeing this, immediately moved in to restrain him."Let go of me! I'm not leaving!" Edward struggled, his voice hoarse. "Diana, you can't be so heartless. You can't let our daughter grow up without a father!"
The guards forcefully dragged Edward towards the parking lot exit, but he kept shouting desperately.
Edward stumbled, nearly falling. But he didn't give up, turning his head to shout at me, "Diana, no one is better for you than me. I am your husband!"
I didn't respond, letting Edward struggle against the guards.
As Edward resisted, the guards became increasingly impatient. One of the younger guards, visibly frustrated, gave him a hard shove. Edward lost his footing and slammed into a nearby car with a thud.
Then, the guard punched him hard in the shoulder. The other guards joined in, showing no concern for Edward's well-being.
Caught off guard by the sudden attack, Edward instinctively covered his head with his arms, trying to fend off the blows. But against the group of guards, his resistance was futile.
Watching Edward in such a sorry state made my heart race, and I could feel myself starting to shake.
"How can you hit him? Stop it!" I shouted in horror.
Despite the pain Edward had caused me, I couldn't bear to see him suffer such senseless violence. I thought about how Edward had likely faced similar situations over the years. The world could be so cruel.
I wanted to intervene, but Alaric held me back. "Don't go over there. It's dangerous! You might get hurt!"
"I can't just watch them beat Edward. It's not fair!" I raised my voice.
Alaric looked at me intently and said, "I'll talk to the guards."
As Alaric intervened, the guards finally stopped.
At that time, Edward lay on the ground, trembling and groaning in pain.
Seeing Edward's miserable state, I couldn't stop shaking.
Alaric quickly supported me, asking worriedly, "Diana, are you okay?"
I nodded, trying to stay calm, and urged Alaric, "Let's go!"
Alaric understood and helped me into the car, closing the door behind me.
The car slowly drove out of the parking lot.
Through the rearview mirror, I saw Edward surrounded by the guards. His hair was disheveled, his clothes wrinkled, and his face full of despair and helplessness. But his eyes followed our car until he was out of sight.
I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes, but my mind replayed the recent events like a movie and the Howard Group's pressing issues.
Meanwhile, Alaric drove quietly, occasionally glancing at me. He understood that I needed to calm down, so he didn't disturb me.
We soon arrived at the Howard Group. We hurried into the elevator and headed straight for the conference room.
