Chapter 40 Edward Killed the Woman Who Loved Him
"You miserable woman. Edward's the best, and you can't talk about him like that." Anne clung to Edward's arm, shaking it. Her shoulder looked fine now, like she'd healed up pretty well.
"Mr. Howard, did you even check the time before coming to pick someone up? It's so late. If you took any longer, we'd be home by now." I had to hand it to David; he had a real talent for sarcasm.
"Diana, we're here to take you home today. Don't be ungrateful." Edward's voice had a sharp edge to it.
"What if Diana doesn't want to go back?" David shot back, his tone icy.
"That's not her call!" Edward's eyes blazed with anger, like a lion ready to pounce.
The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Edward's fists were clenched tight. David stood firm, his back straight, meeting Edward's fiery gaze head-on.
As their eyes locked, I felt trouble brewing. After a brief standoff, Edward made the first move, his fist flying toward David like a bolt of lightning.
David dodged, sidestepping the punch. He quickly countered with a kick to Edward's gut. Edward grunted but didn't back down; he came at David even harder. Their fight got more intense, the air around them practically buzzing with their energy.
I watched anxiously from the sidelines, my worry spiking. This whole mess started because of me, and seeing them go at it like this made my heart ache. I shouted their names, my voice raw, hoping they'd stop this pointless fight.
But my cries seemed to fall on deaf ears. They were too wrapped up in their brawl. Finally, after a fierce exchange, they both seemed to run out of steam. Edward and David stopped, panting heavily, still glaring at each other with eyes full of anger.
Anne rushed to Edward's side, gently tugging his arm, her voice soft and sweet. "Edward, don't be mad. I'm so worried about you."
Edward's mouth twitched slightly as he looked at Anne, but he didn't say anything. Anne's eyes lit up with an idea. She hurried over to me, grabbed my hand, and placed it in Edward's, positioning me between the two men.
Edward's hand was cold, and he stood in front of me with a serious look, his eyes full of determination. "Diana, you're coming home with me."
I glared at him. "Why? You can't make me."
Edward frowned, his tone firm. "We're still married. I'm your husband. You are coming home with me."
I struggled with all my might, but Edward held my arm tightly, not letting go. "Edward, you're too controlling. You don't care about my feelings at all."
He didn't budge. "I'm doing this for your own good. Let's go home and talk."
"Diana, just go with Edward. Let's go home together. There's lots of good food at home, and I'll play with you." Anne's cute act only made me more irritated. I had been in a good mood today, but Edward and Anne's arrival had ruined it. Right now, I just wanted to be alone.
I glanced at Lila, who then looked at Nolan, who finally turned to David. David broke the silence, "Look, if she wants to go, let her go. Why ask us?" With that, he turned away.
I struggled like crazy, trying to break free from Edward's iron grip, but he held on tight, like he was trying to trap me in his world.
Why was life so unfair? Why couldn't I even choose my own path? I used to be so hopeful about love, but now, it felt like a distant dream.
Edward had killed the part of me that loved him. As I looked at his determined face, my heart filled with resentment. How could he be so selfish? Didn't he realize he was destroying my hope for the future bit by bit?
My body started trembling uncontrollably. I shook my head in despair, tears streaming down my face and landing on Edward's sleeve. I saw him flinch.
"Diana, Edward really cares about you. While you weren't home, he was searching everywhere for news about you, trying to get you out as soon as possible," Anne gently tugged at my sleeve, speaking softly.
I believed Edward had been looking for me, but not to get me out. He wanted to lock me up and never let me go.
I turned my face away, not wanting to engage. But Anne didn't give up. "Edward just doesn't know how to express himself. You know, he had autism as a child. He just doesn't know how to show his feelings. He's always only loved you. He's afraid of losing you, that's why he's so impulsive." Anne gently shook my arm, looking at me expectantly. "Diana, the roses we planted together in the yard have bloomed. They smell so good! You said you wanted to make rose jam."
"Diana, if you want to go back, then go. You can work things out when you get home," Nolan suggested, seeing my hesitation.
Edward's eyes were filled with disdain and pride as he looked down at me, like he was admiring his prey.
I looked at David, then at Edward, feeling torn. If I went with Edward, I didn't know what awaited me. If I didn't go, the issues between us would never be resolved, and I'd never truly be free.
"Fine, I'll go with you." I took a deep breath, making up my mind. David, who had been facing away from me, suddenly turned around. His lips trembled slightly, but he said nothing.
As the car slowly started, I saw David watching me, his eyes full of sorrow.
"Diana, have some water." Anne handed me a thermos. "I made this juice especially for you." Her voice was still sweet and charming.
"It tastes really good." I took a sip, the fragrance filling my mouth, making my body feel lighter. I took a couple more sips, and a wave of drowsiness washed over me.
