Chapter 148 Useless Husband

When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital bed. Melissa was dozing off beside me, looking completely wiped out. Her hair was a mess, and even in her sleep, she seemed worried. I tried to sit up and get some water, but Melissa noticed the movement and woke up.

"Melissa," I croaked out, my voice rough.

She snapped awake, rubbing her eyes. Relief and surprise flashed across her face. "Mrs. Howard, you're awake! You scared me so much last night..." Her voice was still shaky from the scare.

My mind went back to last night. I remembered leaving the Howard Mansion and driving Melissa back to the Howard Villa. Suddenly, I felt nauseous, my head got fuzzy, and then... nothing.

"What happened last night?" I asked, my lips dry and cracked.

Melissa quickly poured me a glass of water and handed it to me. "Mrs. Howard, last night in the car, you said you wanted to divorce Mr. Howard. Right after that, you passed out. It scared me to death."

"Did we crash? Are you okay?" I asked, worried.

Melissa gave a bitter smile. "Mrs. Howard, we were lucky. The car hit some roadside bushes, which slowed us down. We weren't seriously hurt. It was a close call."

I sighed in relief but still felt uneasy. "What about the car?"

Melissa shook her head, looking a bit scared. "The traffic police probably towed it. You were unconscious, and all I could think about was getting you to the hospital."

I nodded slightly. "Please don't tell the Howard family about this yet."

Melissa looked confused. "Why not tell Mr. Howard? Even if he's busy, he shouldn't ignore something like this." She sounded angry.

I sighed, feeling a mix of pain and determination. "Melissa, you don't get it. My marriage with him is over. Once I'm better, I'll divorce him. If I tell him now, he'll just think I'm trying to get his sympathy. I don't want his fake concern. I just want to rest for a few days."

Melissa nodded, thinking it over. "Mr. Howard might not take care of you as well as I can. Let me stay with you for the next few days."

"No, Melissa, you should go back to the Howard Villa. I'll have a friend take care of me," I said softly.

"You don't want Mr. Howard to take care of you, and you don't want me either?" Melissa's voice was hurt, her eyes a bit red. "You hired me. Even if you divorce Mr. Howard, I want to stay with you."

I knew that even though Melissa had a decent salary at the Howard Villa, she wasn't happy. The work wasn't hard, but she had to deal with Edward and Anne, that awful couple, every day. She must have been holding back a lot of anger and couldn't be happy.

I held her hand, my eyes full of gratitude. "Melissa, just hang in there a little longer. Once I get all this sorted out, I'll definitely bring you over. You know I need someone like you to take care of me," I said.

Melissa's eyes lit up, and a smile spread across her face.

After drinking a glass of warm water, I felt the warmth spread through my body, making me feel more relaxed. I glanced at the wall clock to check the time. I figured Lila should be up by now. I took out my phone, feeling a bit hesitant about calling her. But given the situation, I had no choice. I dialed her number, and after a few rings, she answered, sounding cheerful.

"Diana, are you regretting resigning? You're always welcome back at Stellar Legal Advisors," Lila said, her voice full of expectation. I was a bit taken aback, not expecting her to think that way. I smiled wryly; she still didn't understand how determined I was, but her concern showed how much she cared.

I sighed lightly, my voice tired. "No, I don't plan to go back right now. But I'm in a bit of trouble." I hesitated, unsure where to start.

As expected, the moment Lila heard I was in trouble, her tone turned anxious. "Is Edward bothering you again?" she asked, her voice quick and worried.

I could imagine her frowning with concern, feeling touched; my problems always seemed to worry her so much. I replied, "No. But, Lila, could you help me find a caregiver?" I felt uneasy, not knowing how to explain without making her too worried.

"A caregiver?" Lila's voice rose, sounding even more worried. "Are you sick? Why do you suddenly need a caregiver?" she bombarded me with questions. I could feel her urgency, and it warmed my heart.

I replied helplessly, "I'm in the hospital now." After saying that, I realized I didn't even know the name of the hospital. I turned to Melissa and asked, "Melissa, which hospital is this?" I silently scolded myself for not knowing.

Melissa told me the hospital's name, and I quickly relayed it to Lila. "Lila, please arrange for a caregiver to come to the hospital. I'll explain everything when you get here." I hoped she wouldn't rush over, but I knew she wouldn't listen.

"Okay, I'll be there as soon as I can. Just rest and wait for me," Lila said before hanging up hurriedly.

I shook my head helplessly. "Lila really has no patience," I said.

I wanted to tell her not to rush, but I knew it wouldn't have made a difference. Thinking of this, I felt a warmth fill my heart. Every time I needed help, Lila would drop everything and rush to my side, like a guardian angel. Having such a caring friend made Edward's indifference as a husband even more apparent, and I felt even more disappointed in him by comparison.

Thinking Lila would show up soon, I turned to Melissa and said, "Hey, Melissa, it's still early. You should head back to the Howard Villa. Don't want anyone getting suspicious."

Melissa shook her head and replied, "Anne went straight from the Howard Mansion to her friend's party last night, and she probably hasn't come back yet. Aria moved back to the Howard Mansion recently, and Mr. Edward Howard hasn't been around for days. If I go back, I'd just be cleaning. I'd rather stay here and look after you. I'll leave when Lila gets here."

Even though she was just stating the obvious, I picked up on something important. "Wait, you said Anne went to a party again last night?" I asked.
