Chapter 358 David Seeks Help
Edward's face went ice-cold in a heartbeat.
He muttered, "Didn't see that coming."
I quickly chimed in, "You were so caught up in your career back then, and you had so many women around you that you didn't even notice her feelings."
Edward went quiet, his head dropping a bit as he tried to wrap his mind around the news.
Just then, the door to the consultation room swung open, and out came Lila. She spotted Edward right away, her steps faltering as a cautious look crossed her face. She sped up, positioning herself in front of me, her eyes locked on Edward like she was ready to fend off a threat.
Seeing this, I quickly said, "Lila, you're done? I just bumped into Edward and we were chatting a bit."
I turned to Edward. "You two know each other, so no need for intros."
Edward gave a slight nod, breaking the awkward silence first. "Lila, it's been a while."
But Lila's expression stayed cold, and she only gave a slight nod back.
I tried to lighten the mood with a smile. "What a coincidence running into each other today," I said.
After a few more words, Edward excused himself, saying he had some volunteer work to get to. His departing figure seemed a bit lonely, and Lila watched him leave without a word.
I gently patted her shoulder and said, "Alright, don't overthink it. We should head back too."
Lila turned to me, her eyes filled with concern. "Diana, I'm still worried that Edward's reappearance might mess up your life again."
I pretended to be relaxed as I reassured her, "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing. The past is the past. I cherish my life now, and Edward has moved on too."
On the way back, the car moved slowly, the scenery outside fading into the distance. Lila broke the silence, asking softly, "Are you really okay with Edward? Seeing him like that, I can't help but worry."
I looked at the road ahead, my thoughts drifting, and said softly, "There's nothing between us. I'm just glad to see he's trying to improve his life."
After I dropped Lila off with Lachlan and Jessa, thoughts of Fiona and Edward lingered in my mind, refusing to fade away. As soon as I got home, I couldn't wait to pick up my phone and find David's number. After a moment of hesitation, I dialed.
"Diana?" David's tired voice came through the receiver.
I didn't beat around the bush. "David, I heard Fiona contacted Edward and plans to fund his startup after the divorce. Is that true?"
There was a brief silence on the other end before David sighed, "It's true. Fiona has completely changed recently. She keeps talking about divorce and wanting to help Edward. I've tried to talk her out of it and apologized, but she won't listen."
Hearing this, I felt a sense of dread wash over me. I asked, "Why is she doing this all of a sudden? What's going on between them?"David went quiet again, and after what felt like forever, he finally spoke, "Diana, you know some of it. The car accident that caused Fiona's miscarriage was orchestrated by Lanny. Fiona thinks that if it weren't for your company's overseas project and her involvement in helping you find Lanny, none of this would have happened, and she wouldn't have lost her child. So now, she's doing this partly to get back at the Wilson family and partly to make you feel the pain of losing something important."
Hearing this, my grip on the phone went numb, a chill creeping over me. I was overwhelmed with shock and regret, struggling to find the words. "Fiona's revenge has started, David. I never imagined it would come to this, putting you and the Wilson family in such a tough spot."
David replied, "This isn't your fault; it's Lanny's. But Fiona is stuck in this mindset. She's consumed by hatred and won't listen to reason."
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. "I understand. Thank you for telling me. Take care of yourself. I hope we can handle this properly," I responded.
After hanging up, I sat on the couch, feeling incredibly heavy-hearted. I closed my eyes, trying to sort through my thoughts. Fiona's pain and hatred, David's helplessness and guilt over Fiona's betrayal and family issues, Edward's confusion and struggle being caught in the middle—all of it was somehow connected to me.
Not long after, my phone rang, pulling me back to reality. The screen showed David's number. I quickly answered.
"Diana." David's voice sounded even more urgent than before. "I know this is sudden, but the Wilson family is in unprecedented trouble. Fiona's actions have severely impacted our business. If this continues, the Wilson family might go bankrupt."
"What can I do to help?" I asked, knowing David was just as proud as Edward and wouldn't easily seek assistance.
David remarked, "I've thought it over, and the only one who can help us is Nicholas. He's your godfather. Could you ask him to help the Wilson family, for old times' sake?"
Listening to David's near-pleading tone, I felt torn. The Cooper Group's involvement had indirectly led to Fiona's tragedy, and I felt guilty towards both the Wilson and Griffin families. Helping David seemed like the right thing to do.
But I also remembered how Nicholas had been furious when Lanny kidnapped Lila, leading him to personally end Lanny's life. Though Nicholas hadn't blamed David or the Wilson family, he had warned that he wouldn't tolerate any more misconduct from them.
Given David's desperate situation, I couldn't simply stand by and do nothing. After a long hesitation, I said slowly, "David, I can't promise anything right away. Nicholas isn't easy to persuade, but I'll try my best."
"Diana, thank you so much!" David's voice was filled with gratitude and a hint of relief. "If we can get through this, the Wilson family will never forget your kindness."
After hanging up, I fell into deep thought. Asking Nicholas for help was no simple task. He was highly respected in the business world and had his own principles. After much deliberation, I decided to first gauge Nicholas's attitude.
