Chapter 31 Confrontation with Capital

After a long night, I finally made it to dawn and got ready to head out. Nolan called, asking me to come to the law firm. Hearing the urgency in his voice, I decided to meet him first. I also wanted to ask Nolan what he thought about this matter.

Nolan was already waiting for me in his office. He was about ten years older than David, but he still looked like a spirited young man. When he saw me, Nolan stood up to greet me.

Nolan said, "Diana, the firm has taken on several big cases recently. I owe you big time."

I was confused. "It's your expertise and Stellar Legal Advisors' reputation that attracts clients," I said honestly.

Nolan shook his head with a smile. "In the past, these clients wouldn't have even considered Stellar Legal Advisors. This time, they came because of you. I need to keep you around; the future of Stellar Legal Advisors depends on you!"

He seemed genuinely thrilled, as if I'd performed some miracle. But I knew the truth. They didn't care about me. They cared about Mrs. Howard. My self-recommendation at Hayden's birthday party had started to pay off.

"Here are some files for you to look at. We can discuss them later. I plan to have you handle this case. Mr. Wilson has already agreed, so it's up to you now!" Nolan placed a thick stack of files in front of me.

I skimmed through the files. The case was indeed interesting. If I could win it, it would bring significant benefits to Stellar Legal Advisors and a substantial reward for me personally. But right now, I couldn't focus on it. Edward believed I was the kidnapper of Anne and wanted to send me to jail. I could get involved in a lawsuit, but Stellar Legal Advisors couldn't.

I knew how hard Nolan had worked to build the firm. Besides, there were dozens of excellent lawyers at the firm who couldn't just start over like Nolan. I didn't want my issues to affect the firm.

"I'm not here for a new case today," I pushed the files back to Nolan as I said.

"What? You're not planning to work?" Nolan was shocked. When I first interviewed, I was eager to start immediately.

I showed Nolan the injury on my arm and told him what had happened in the past few days. Nolan listened quietly, occasionally frowning in thought, without saying a word. Honestly, I wanted to hear his thoughts but didn't want to tell him everything, as we weren't that close.

"What do you plan to do?" Nolan suddenly asked.

I sighed, "I don't know. I'll go to the police first and see if I can meet the suspect. I have a feeling the suspect's real target isn't Anne but me," I voiced my suspicion.

Nolan didn't respond, instead, he got up and grabbed his coat. "I'll go with you. Maybe I can help."

I was grateful for Nolan's support but worried about inconveniencing him, so I timidly asked if he was sure. Nolan nodded. "If the suspect is to be prosecuted, they'll need a lawyer, right? Maybe I or one of our firm's lawyers can be their defense attorney." Defending such suspects wasn't Nolan's specialty. His willingness to take on the case must have a purpose. I didn't ask further and followed Nolan out.

At the police station, the young officer from yesterday recognized me immediately. He shook my hand politely and told me the case was still under investigation and he couldn't provide any updates. He was just doing his job, so I didn't press him. I told him I was Edward's wife and wanted to see the chief. The young officer hesitated for a moment before running to the chief's office. Soon, a portly officer came over quickly.

"Oh, Mrs. Howard, I didn't know you were coming. I'm Chief Donovan Murphy. What can I do for you?" Donovan's oily appearance was unmistakable. I didn't want to engage in conversation with him and requested to see the suspect.

Donovan looked at the young officer, appearing troubled. "Mrs. Howard, there's no need for you to see such a lowlife." Hearing his refusal, I exchanged a glance with Nolan and decided to leave.

As we walked out, I heard Donovan tell the young officer, "Mr. Howard said this case is significant. Be extra careful with everyone, especially Mrs. Howard." I turned back and saw the young officer nodding.

I suddenly understood that some rules were only made for ordinary people. Those at the top of the capital hierarchy were both the rule-makers and the beneficiaries.

"You don't need to be too upset. Now isn't the right time to see the suspect. Why don't you think back to what happened before the incident?" Nolan comforted me.

I searched my mind but found nothing unusual. If there was anything odd, it was that Anne suddenly wanted juice and asked Edward to stop the car.

Then Edward got distracted, hit a homeless man, who then pulled out a knife and attacked. Then a van blocked Edward and me, and Anne was taken away.

It all seemed too coincidental. The juice store Anne mentioned was a cheap brand, not something a rich girl like her would usually care about. Anne had never shown interest in such things before, but she was enthusiastic that day. Yet, was there truly a correlation? It seemed plausible for a young girl to desire juice.
