Chapter 231 Reunion with an Old Friend
The next morning, I was still knocked out when my phone suddenly blared. It was Lila calling.
Half-asleep, I answered, "Hey, what's up?"
Lila's voice on the other end sounded a bit shaky. "Diana, can you help out at Stellar Legal Advisors for a few days?"
I snapped awake, feeling a bit uneasy. "What's going on? Everything okay?" I asked.
Lila coughed awkwardly. "It's nothing serious. I just need to leave Wind City for a bit, and I need your help."
I paused, thinking about my recent plans. "Alright, I can cover for a while. But come back soon. I've decided to reclaim the Cooper Group, and I might need to focus on that."
"What? Are you giving up being a lawyer?" Lila sounded shocked. She let out a short, bitter laugh. "Well, I guess it makes sense. The Cooper Group is your family's legacy. You should take it back."
Her words gave me some comfort. She continued, "Since you're so determined, I can't just run away. Let's head to Stellar Legal Advisors together today."
After hanging up, I rushed out the door. The weather was nice, but my mind was elsewhere.
On one hand, I was about to tackle the mess at the Cooper Group. On the other, there was Stellar Legal Advisors, which Lila and I had built together. The future was full of unknowns and challenges.
The morning streets were packed with traffic. In my hurry, I rear-ended a white sedan at an intersection.
My heart skipped a beat. I quickly unbuckled my seatbelt and got out to check the situation. The other driver was fine but started yelling at me from inside his car, leaving me flustered.
Just then, the driver of the car next to us got out. I looked up and saw it was Theo.
"Ms. Cooper, don't worry. I'll handle this," Theo said calmly. He walked over to me, his eyes filled with concern as he checked to see if I was okay. Then, he began negotiating with the other driver, calming him down with just a few words.
Theo methodically took out his phone, contacted the insurance company and the police, and clearly explained the location and details of the accident.
Once everything was settled, Theo turned to me with a hint of nostalgia. He said, "Ms. Cooper, it's been a while. Since I left the Cooper Group, I've been keeping an eye on you, wondering how you've been."
His words warmed my heart. Being genuinely cared for made me feel a rare sense of comfort amidst the chaos of the accident.
Soon, the police and insurance reps arrived. With his experience and calm demeanor, Theo helped them quickly complete the accident investigation and liability determination.
Throughout the process, I stood by, watching Theo's busy figure, feeling grateful to have run into him at this moment.
When everything was sorted out, Theo said, "Ms. Cooper, the car issue is resolved. It's nothing serious. Where are you headed? I'll take you there."
We were close to Stellar Legal Advisors, so I invited him to come along.
Theo didn't hesitate and followed me to the office. Surprisingly, Lila, who had said she was leaving town, was already busy in her office.
After greeting Lila, I took Theo to a small meeting room.
Theo and I had always been straightforward with each other. I got straight to the point. "Theo, I was planning to visit you, but I didn't expect us to meet like this today."
Theo sighed, "I should be the one visiting you."
He was always so polite. I was eager for our conversation, hoping he could help with the Cooper Group.
"Just call me Diana," I reminded him. "No need to be so formal."
Theo nodded.
I asked, "Have you been in touch with anyone from the Cooper Group lately?"
At the mention of the Cooper Group, Theo's expression darkened. He replied, "I worked there for many years, but when I left, it wasn't exactly on good terms. Those people are opportunists. I haven't kept in touch."
I nodded and asked, "What if I asked you to return to the Cooper Group?"
Theo's eyes widened in genuine confusion. "What do you mean?" he asked.
I took a sip of coffee and said, "I want you to come back to the Cooper Group and help me manage it."
"Diana, are you serious?" Theo's voice trembled with disbelief.
I nodded solemnly. "I'm negotiating to reclaim my shares. You know I'm not great at running a company, and I have the law firm and other commitments. I need a capable person I trust."
I smiled at Theo, but his impassive expression made it hard to read his reaction. I looked at him expectantly, hoping for a positive response.
After a moment of contemplation, Theo seemed to make a decision. He said, "Diana, I've always said that if you need me, I'll be there for you. Just tell me what you need."
I was relieved by his determination. "I haven't secured the shares yet, but Edward is negotiating. With his mediation and your support, acquiring the shares at a reasonable price shouldn't be difficult," I said.
Theo looked puzzled. "You and him..."
"There's nothing between us," I said flatly.
Theo didn't doubt Edward's abilities. Seeing I didn't want to elaborate, he didn't press further. He said, "I believe he can do it. Once we have the shares, I'll do everything in my power to manage the Cooper Group."
Theo had been with the Cooper Group since Mason was alive. His loyalty was a great comfort to me.
I promised Theo, "As long as the Cooper Group is profitable, your compensation will be higher than any comparable position in the city."
Just then, my phone rang urgently. Seeing the number on the screen, I felt my heart skip a beat. It was David! Why was he calling me?
