Chapter 218 Anne's Scheme
David gave me a gentle pat on the head and chuckled, "Silly, of course, I'll come back. I'm just heading to the branch office over there. How could I not come back? You stay home and wait for me."
I hugged David tightly and shook my head like crazy.
"Let me go with you," I pleaded. "If we're together, we can look out for each other. How can I stand to let you go so far away alone?"
David sighed, "Diana, be good, okay? Wait for me at home."
Just then, the airport PA system blared, "Dear passengers, the flight to Ignis is now boarding. Please bring your belongings and proceed to the boarding gate."
It wasn't until the third announcement that we finally let go of each other.
As David walked away, it felt like my heart was flying with him to that far-off place. Our relationship hit a calm period. An ocean separated us, but I knew I had a place in his heart, and he was always in mine.
We turned our longing into motivation, throwing ourselves into our careers. Despite the time difference, I video-called David every night before bed. When he had free time, he'd quietly join my livestream, sometimes sending extravagant gifts that made him my top contributor. Ironically, as the weather got colder, my passion for streaming only grew stronger.
One day, I got a private message from Anne on my short video platform: [Diana, I'm so happy to see your live-streaming career thriving. It's been a long time since we last met. Let's find a time to catch up. I have a secret to tell you!]
Remembering the constant drama whenever I met Anne, I didn't really want to see her. But her mention of a secret got me curious. So, I prepared carefully, hiding a recording pen in my trench coat pocket. This way, even if she had any bad intentions, I'd have solid evidence.
Unlike before, when Anne would always meet me in busy places, this time she chose a quiet bookstore. Though puzzled, I felt confident with my preparations and went to the meeting. Seeing me, Anne waved excitedly, like she was genuinely happy to see an old friend.
I sat across from Anne and got straight to the point, "What do you want to tell me today?"
Anne pouted and said, "Diana, I've been kicked out of the Howard family for so long, and you don't even care about how I've been doing?"
I couldn't help but sneer, "Even though you were kicked out of the Howard family, Edward didn't treat you badly, did he? You're still his little princess, so I don't need to worry about your life."
At the mention of Edward, the light in Anne's eyes noticeably dimmed.
"Talking about Edward just annoys me," she said, sounding tired.
"Really?" I asked, my interest piqued.
"Diana, you should reconcile with Edward," Anne said, almost like an order.
Hearing this, I couldn't help but laugh.
"Weren't you the one who wanted to break up Edward and me? Now you're asking me to reconcile with him. Do you think marriage is a game?" I asked, genuinely curious.
"You don't know that I'm so fed up with Aria," Anne practically shouted.
Her voice echoed through the quiet bookstore, drawing curious glances from a few people. Realizing this, she quickly lowered her voice and continued, "Ever since Edward got with Aria, he doesn't care about me anymore. And Aria's got him on a tight leash." Anne's face twisted with resentment, still looking as childish as ever.
I was full of doubts and asked, "What does this have to do with me?"
Anne raised her chin slightly and responded confidently, "How does it not? When Edward was with you, he still put me first. But now, I think he's almost forgotten about me."
Understanding Anne's selfishness, I sighed in resignation.
Anne crossed her arms and leaned back on the sofa, continuing. "Anyway, you and David won't have a future together. Why not reconcile with Edward? It would be good for both of us."
My heart tightened, and I became instantly alert. I asked, "How do you know David and I won't have a future together?"
Anne said nonchalantly, "Edward told me. He said David was sent to Ignis by the Wilson family to marry a business partner's daughter over there. He won't come back."
Hearing this, I froze, gripping the sofa armrest so tightly my knuckles turned white. I almost broke it.
"Diana, if you damage the sofa, you'll have to pay for it," Anne reminded me with a crescent-eyed smile.
I felt as if I had woken from a dream, my eyes filled with a mix of panic and disbelief. My lips trembled slightly as I asked her, "Is it true? David went to Ignis to get married?"
Anne nodded lightly, her expression calm and straightforward, looking directly into my eyes.
She replied, "Edward told me. So I advise you not to foolishly wait for David to come back. He won't. Even if he does, it will probably be with his family for a visit. Do you want to see David and his family showing off their love in front of you?"
Calming down, I asked Anne, with a hint of anger and unwillingness, "Anne, why are you telling me this?"
Anne shrugged, a sly smile playing on her lips.
"Of course, to join forces with you." She paused and leaned forward, her eyes glittering with calculation as she moved deliberately closer. She continued, "To counter Aria. Help me bring her down, and I'll find a way to plead David's case and bring him back."
I found it absurd and couldn't help but show a mocking smile, asking mercilessly, "You? Can you speak to Mr. Wilson?"
Anne was momentarily stunned, then a smug smile appeared on her lips. She replied, "Yes, I may not have that much power, but I can say a few words to Edward, and he should listen, right? Then Edward can talk to Mr. Wilson."
Suddenly, as if struck by a thought, Anne raised her voice and shouted, "I must be so foolish. If you reconcile with Edward, David will be heartbroken when he returns, right? It might be better for him to marry and have children in Ignis."
With that, Anne crossed her arms and laughed heartily. Her unrestrained laughter echoed in the empty space, each sound carrying a chilling malice.
