Chapter 327 The Child Was Not Saved

The thug's words left everyone in the room speechless, especially David.

He quickly closed the gap between them, grabbing the thug by the collar and demanding, "Did he really say that to you?"

The thug sneered, spitting out a mouthful of blood, and looked at David mockingly. "You should be grateful I spared your life. But if your wife dies, your future won't be any better." With that, the thug laughed as a few bodyguards dragged him back to the stairwell.

The sound of fighting resumed, but soon it quieted down.

One of the bodyguards approached Ronnie and whispered something in his ear. Ronnie nodded, and the bodyguard gave a slight bow before returning to the stairwell.

Ronnie turned to David with a cold expression. "I need an explanation for this."

David looked terrified, unsure of how to respond.

Seeing David like this, I wanted to speak up for him. But given the misunderstandings between Ronnie, Harper, and me, I didn't know where to start.

The door to the emergency room slowly opened, breaking the silence in the hallway. A doctor stepped out.

David rushed forward almost instinctively, urgently asking, "Doctor, how is Fiona? Is the baby okay?"

The doctor sighed, his expression heavy. "Although we managed to save Fiona, the baby didn't make it. I'm sorry for your loss."

David's face froze, and he stood there in shock.

Hearing the news brought tears to my eyes.

Harper burst into tears, crying out, "My grandchild! How could this happen? That child was our family's hope!"

A group of nurses wheeled Fiona out of the emergency room. Everyone quickly gathered around the bed.

Fiona's once round belly was now flat, her face as pale as a ghost, and her eyes were closed in a deep coma. The steady beeping of the monitor beside her was the only sign of her stubborn fight for life. Seeing this, Ronnie gently touched Fiona's pale cheek, relieved. "Thank God Fiona is okay. Losing the baby is heartbreaking, but as long as Fiona pulls through, there's still hope."

A nurse stepped forward, gently reminding everyone, "Fiona is very weak right now. For her safety, please don't get too close."

Reluctantly, everyone took a few steps back, their eyes still fixed on Fiona.

The nurse then took a clipboard from the bedside and continued, "These are the details of the emergency procedures. Her husband needs to handle the paperwork. Who is her husband?"

The nurse's gaze swept over everyone, finally settling on David.

David instinctively reached out to take the clipboard, but Ronnie was quicker, snatching it from the nurse's hand.

Ronnie raised his chin slightly, his expression a mix of authority and affection. "I'm her father."He handed the clipboard to his assistant. "Take care of the paperwork for Fiona."

The nurse frowned slightly, clearly displeased with Ronnie's actions. She quickly composed herself and firmly explained, "Our hospital policy requires that the patient's husband complete these forms and signatures. To ensure she receives the necessary follow-up care, please handle this promptly."

She took the clipboard back, discreetly glancing at David.

David understood immediately. He took the clipboard from the nurse and hurried to the billing office.

The nurse pushed Fiona's bed towards the room, with Ronnie and Harper closely following. Taking advantage of their focus on Fiona, David returned.

He quickly approached me, speaking in a low voice, "Diana, you should go back and be with Skylar. She really needs you right now."

Noticing the exhaustion on David's face, I felt a wave of sympathy.

I realized that staying here wouldn't help David or Fiona and might only make Ronnie and Harper more upset.

After some thought, I decided to leave.

Once Fiona's bed was secured, I walked over to Ronnie and Harper, bowed slightly, and said softly, "Mr. Griffin, Mrs. Griffin, Fiona is stable now. I'll head back. I hope she recovers soon."

Hearing this, Harper turned her head, giving me a brief, indifferent glance. She replied, "Okay."

Ronnie didn't respond, just stared at me with a cold snort.

Feeling awkward and unsure of what to say, I decided to leave.

As I exited the hospital, I ran into David returning from the billing office. He noticed my downcast mood and tried to comfort me. "Fiona's been through a lot. My in-laws are understandably upset. Don't take it to heart."

Seeing David's concerned expression, I shook my head gently and advised, "Take care of yourself and Fiona."

With that, I turned and left the hospital.

Standing at the entrance, I raised my hand to hail a cab.

Just then, a familiar car pulled up. The window rolled down, revealing Alaric's face.

He said, "Diana, I'm here to pick you up."

Surprised, I hesitated for a moment before asking, "How did you know I was leaving the hospital?"

Alaric smiled warmly. "After dropping Skylar off, I came back. I figured you might not be able to answer your phone in the room, so I waited here for you."

His words filled me with a sense of warmth. I thanked him softly and got into the car.

As we drove, I stared out the window, lost in thought, but I could feel Alaric glancing at me occasionally.

After some hesitation, he finally asked, "How's Fiona?"

I turned to look at his profile, feeling drained. "Fiona's okay, but the baby didn't make it."

Alaric frowned slightly. "Don't be too sad."
