Chapter 203 Uninvited Guest
I was freaking out. Stellar Legal Advisors was our hardwork, and I couldn't just let it go. But after what happened to Lila, I was scared there might be more trouble ahead. Plus, Lila was in a tough spot too. She poured her heart into Stellar Legal Advisors, but her parents were getting older, and she needed to take care of them. It was a real dilemma.
After digging around, I finally got the full picture. The companies that approached Lila for business did want to outsource their legal services, but they weren't serious about working with us. Someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes. That's why they reached out to Lila; otherwise, Stellar Legal Advisors wouldn't have been on their radar.
Most of them didn't want to hurt Lila; they just wanted to use the work as an excuse to suppress her, or more accurately, to suppress Stellar Legal Advisors. But one sleazy guy saw how beautiful Lila was and spiked her drink.
Knowing the whole story, I was baffled. Who could be so bold? My first guess was Anne. She was always up to something sneaky and loved to stir the pot.
I shared my thoughts with David, but he shook his head right away. With a serious look, he said, "Anne's never been involved in the company's affairs. How could she convince those company bosses?"
David had a point, and we both fell silent. Then another name popped into my head. While I was thinking, David suddenly stood up, looking serious, and said, "Diana, I've got some stuff to handle, so I can't be around. Be careful."
"Where are you going?" I asked, confused.
David, with a cold expression, just said, "Home." And then he walked out quickly.
After David left, I realized Lila couldn't stay in such a dangerous situation. Running Stellar Legal Advisors with these risks wasn't a solution. Maybe it was better to shut it down and just practice law on our own.
This was too heavy to discuss at Lila's office, so I invited her over to my place.
That day, I cooked up a feast, waiting for Lila to arrive. She probably thought it was just a casual get-together. During dinner, I found the right moment to bring it up.
Seeing Lila in a good mood, I said, "The incident with your drink was aimed at Stellar Legal Advisors."
Lila looked surprised and asked, "You mean someone is targeting us through the firm?"
I paused and then said, "I divorced Edward. As long as Stellar Legal Advisors is around, this might keep happening. Should we keep it going?"
Lila didn't expect me to bring this up and asked, "Was it Edward?"
Lila never liked Edward, and he was the only suspect she could think of.
I shook my head and said, "Don't get worked up. It probably wasn't him, but Aria."Lila looked pretty shocked and asked, "Why would she do that?"
I sighed, feeling helpless. "She knew I took Stellar Legal Advisors from Edward and gave it to you, so she bugged Edward to start a law firm for her."
Lila, being sharp, got it right away. "So she wants to compete with us. That's so low," she said, clearly pissed.
I nodded. "As long as Stellar Legal Advisors is around, she'll keep causing trouble. Maybe it's better to shut it down and join a bigger firm."
Lila was taken aback. "Are you really thinking of giving up Stellar Legal Advisors?"
"Are you really thinking of holding on?" I shot back.
This was the first time Lila and I disagreed about business.
Lila grabbed my hands, her eyes determined. "Of course, we have to hold on. We can't back down now. Even if the Howard family isn't reliable, we still have the Wilson family. Plus, with our skills, we can definitely run a law firm well."
Seeing Lila's determination and feeling inspired by her passion, I decided to stick it out.
"Okay, but you can't go solo anymore. If there's any social event, we go together, so we can watch each other's backs."
Lila nodded in agreement.
So, that was settled. But I was still worried about David. Since he left so abruptly, I hadn't seen him, and his phone was always off. It made me anxious, but then I thought, what could be wrong with him?
I figured David probably got bored with me and went off to be with other girls.
Men are like that, and I couldn't be bothered to think more about it. Let him be.
After Lila left, I dragged my tired self back home.
The hallway was quiet, the dim light flickering. Just as I was about to open the door, a shadow darted out from the fire escape and quickly approached me.
Startled, I took several steps back until my heel hit the wall.
I widened my eyes and saw it was Edward. Shocked and angry, I shouted, "Edward, what are you doing?" I glanced warily at the surveillance camera above.
Edward acted like he didn't hear me, with a stern face, gesturing for me to open the door quickly.
Though I didn't want to, I knew I couldn't resist him, so I opened the door.
He strode in, and I cautiously followed, keeping my distance.
My chest heaved with tension, and I looked him straight in the eyes. "Why did you suddenly barge into my house?"
Edward turned and got close, almost touching me. I could feel the heat from his body.
He lowered his head slightly, staring at me with a hint of displeasure. "We've only been apart for a few days, and you're already treating me like a stranger?" He slowly raised his hand, his fingers lightly brushing my cheek, about to touch my hair.
I turned my head, slapped his hand away, took a step back, and raised my voice. "Edward, we're divorced. We have nothing to do with each other now. Don't do this!"
