Chapter 171 Deceitful and Cunning
I gave a small nod and said, "I'll head out right after breakfast."
"But your health..." Melissa looked worried and hesitated.
I grabbed the milk, chugged it down, and shook the empty glass at her with a grin. "Melissa, see? I'm good now," I said.
Melissa looked like she wanted to say more, but she held back. Soon, breakfast was on the table. I forced myself to eat a few bites, but the nausea wouldn't go away. I gently touched my belly and whispered, "Baby, you gotta be strong. Let's eat a bit more and grow up fast. You're my last hope."
Whether it was a coincidence or a connection with the baby, I felt a bit better after saying that. After breakfast, I drove straight to Brightlight Hospital, the best in Wind City and owned by the Howard family, which meant they had a super VIP ward there.
With a nervous heart, I walked into the VIP ward area. As I got closer to the room at the end, I overheard Edward and Aria talking.
"Edward, I'm really fine. Please don't blame Mrs. Diana Howard because of me. This is all my fault; I'm the one who let you down. The Howard family has been so kind to me, and I thought I could repay that kindness by giving you a child. But now..." Aria's voice trembled, and her eyes filled with tears.
She seemed to be blaming herself. "Now, in my current state, I fear I can't even fulfill this last wish. Once I recover a bit, please let me return to Veridian. I'll spend the rest of my life there alone and never come back. That would be best for everyone." She bit her lip, trying not to cry, but her voice still had a hint of sobbing.
The room went silent. I peeked through the window and saw Edward standing by the window. I couldn't see his face, but his tense body made it clear he was furious.
"You don't need to worry. I will seek justice for you. Those who dare to harm you won't get away with it," Edward's voice was icy, each word filled with determination. "No matter who it is, even if they're close to me, I won't let them off."
"No," Aria suddenly got out of bed. "Don't involve the police with Mrs. Diana Howard. I don't want to disrupt your family's harmony because of me," she said.
With a scream, Aria fell to the ground. Edward frowned slightly, then slowly turned around. His gaze was impassive as he looked at her crumpled form on the floor, yet he gently picked her up and placed her back on the bed. Aria nestled in Edward's arms, and I saw a slight blush on her cheeks.
Standing at the door, I was puzzled. She didn't have to get out of bed. Maybe she just wanted Edward's attention.
Unable to watch their affectionate display any longer, I gently knocked on the door. Edward looked up, and the moment our eyes met, his face turned colder and more ruthless. "What are you doing here?" His tone was filled with disgust, like my presence was the most repulsive thing in the world.
I walked into the room and said, "I came to see Aria."
"Please leave. Your presence is the greatest harm to her." Edward's lips curled into a mocking smile as he pointed to the door, making a gesture for me to leave. "You're not welcome here. Get out."
Ignoring Edward, I walked straight to the bedside and stared at Aria. "What evidence do you have that I hurt you? Why are you framing me?" I asked.
Aria seemed shocked that I approached her, shrinking to the corner of the bed and screaming with her head in her hands. Her screams were ear-piercing, attracting many doctors and nurses, but when they saw Edward at the door, none dared to approach.
An elderly, kind-faced doctor cautiously asked, "Mr. Howard, is there anything we can help with?"
Edward shook his head expressionlessly. Seeing this, the doctor quickly left with the others. The super VIP ward had such privileges; no matter what happened inside, no one dared to linger or watch. Especially with the Howard family's prominent status, others avoided their affairs, fearing to bring trouble upon themselves.
"Look at what you've done to Aria! How dare you claim this has nothing to do with you? If it weren't for you, why would she be so afraid of you?" Edward said, stepping forward and forcefully pushing me.
I deftly dodged, a flash of anger in my eyes, and raised my voice. "If I had really done something wrong, how would I dare to show up here?"
Edward's lips curled into a cruel smile, and he sneered, "Criminals often like to return to the scene of the crime or watch the victim's reaction to satisfy their twisted psychology. Aren't you just that kind of person? You appear here, looking at Aria lying pitifully, probably gloating inside, right? You, a woman with a heart of stone, are the most despicable."
"I just wanted to ask Aria what happened. I didn't expect you to blindly accuse me of being the culprit." My eyes were filled with grievance and disappointment, my voice trembling slightly. "Edward, I'm a woman too! I have no grudge against Aria. How could I do such a heinous thing to her? Even if I had the thought, I don't have the ability!"
I grabbed Aria's hand and demanded loudly, "Tell me the truth, what really happened?"
"Stop your lies. Don't think I don't know your tricks. You may not have the courage to act directly, but that doesn't stop you from using your dirty money to hire a hitman. You hide in the shadows, manipulating everything, letting others do the dirty work while you try to stay clean. Diana, you are a cunning and deceitful woman, and you disgust me to the core." Edward spoke, his eyes filled with loathing and distrust, as if he had already condemned me.
Aria looked at me in terror, her body trembling uncontrollably, her lips quivering as she stammered, "Edward, save me!" Her voice was filled with heart-wrenching fear.
Edward frowned, a clear sign of impatience in his eyes. He pressed the call button forcefully. Once connected, he coldly ordered, "Give her a sedative."
The nurses, well aware of Edward's temper, hurried into the room and carefully administered the injection. As the medication took effect, Aria's cries gradually weakened, her eyes became dazed, and she eventually fell silent.
