Chapter 268 Edward Steps In
A sudden noise grabbed everyone's attention, and they all looked up to see a worker teetering on the roof. The sunlight made him look even more fragile.
A seasoned cop grabbed a megaphone and yelled, "Hey, man, don't do anything rash. We can sort this out. Think about your family—they need you!" The worker's voice shook as he replied, "Sort it out? How? My dad's in the hospital, and he needs this money to survive. Without my paycheck, he'll die, and I'll lose everything." The cop kept trying to calm him down, "We're working on a solution. Trust me, the Howard Group will handle this. If you jump, you won't save your dad; you'll just cause him more pain!"
The worker hesitated, his voice full of despair. "I don't trust the police. You've been in bed with those corrupt officials all along. You don't care if I live or die!"
The cop quickly responded, "I promise we'll help with your pay issue. Come down, and we can talk this through, okay?" Everyone held their breath, waiting for the worker's response. But he got more agitated, swaying dangerously over the edge, making my heart race with fear. Then he shouted, "I want to see the president of the Howard Group. I want him to give us our paychecks." The cop, sensing a glimmer of hope, urgently told his colleague, "Get in touch with the head of the Howard Group right now. We can't let this turn into a tragedy."
Soon, the police contacted Albert, who understood the seriousness of the situation and quickly reported it to Edward.
Edward, still in a hospital bed with an IV, jumped up at the news, yanking the needle from his hand as he rushed to leave.
Seeing this, Albert ran after him, blocking his way. "Mr. Howard, your health is important..."
But Edward sidestepped Albert and said, "There's no time to worry about that now."
Edward knew this incident was just the tip of the iceberg for the Howard Group's crisis. So he hurried to the scene.
Seeing the chaos, Edward felt a sense of urgency. He tried to push his way into the police cordon, but a guard stopped him.
At that moment, Albert caught up and shouted, "Make way, this is Mr. Howard from the Howard Group."
Recognizing Edward, the crowd parted, creating a path for him.
Edward took the megaphone from the cop, trying to keep his voice steady and strong. "Hey, I'm Edward from the Howard Group. Please, calm down and come down. We can work through this together."
The worker sneered, "What's the point of talking now? My dad is in the hospital waiting for money to save his life. You rich people don't care about us!"
Edward, filled with guilt, sincerely said, "This mess is on me. I'm really sorry. Please come down and let me fix this."Meanwhile, the crowd started chiming in. "Yeah, don't do anything drastic. Let's talk it out."
"Give him a chance. He might really help."
Hearing this, the worker's emotions eased a bit, and he shouted, "How are you gonna fix this?"
Edward gritted his teeth and replied, "I'll call finance right now and get your pay sorted."
He then whispered instructions to Albert, who nodded and hurried into the building.
Moments later, the worker's phone chimed with a payment notification. He looked at his phone, then at Edward, eyes wide with surprise.
Edward seized the moment and said, "The money's in your account now. Will you come down?"
The worker slowly backed away from the edge and collapsed to the ground. Paramedics rushed to check on him.
Edward then addressed the gathered employees and onlookers, "The Howard Group wouldn't be here without your support and hard work. I'll make sure all employees' wages are paid within three days. I'll handle the company's issues, and I ask for your patience and another chance."
With that, he bowed deeply to the crowd.
Murmurs spread through the crowd, followed by thunderous applause.
Seeing this, Edward knew this crisis was temporarily averted, but the Howard Group's problems were far from over. To truly turn around the situation at the Howard Group, there was still a long road ahead.
As the crowd dispersed, Edward headed into the office building. Reporters, eager for a story, followed him but were stopped by a line of bodyguards.
Inside, Edward stormed towards Anne's office. He flung the door open, startling Anne, who was pretending to be busy.
Edward glared at her, speaking slowly and deliberately, "Anne, tell me the truth. Have I treated you well?"
Anne's face turned pale, tears welling up as she looked at Edward and said, "Edward! What are you talking about? I don't understand."
Edward, usually protective of Anne, was now furious at the mess she had caused. He said, "How long were you planning to hide this? Embezzling funds, colluding with competitors, leaking company secrets—I've uncovered everything."
With that, he took a thick stack of documents from Albert and slammed them onto Anne's desk.
Seeing this, Anne knew she couldn't deny it any longer.
However, she resorted to her usual tactic—crying.
Anne covered her face with her hands and said, "It's all my mother's fault. She demanded money, forcing me to embezzle the workers' wages! She threatened to harm you if I didn't comply!"
She sobbed uncontrollably, her words filled with regret and helplessness. "I was scared. I thought it would blow over, but it only got worse."
Hearing this, Albert, unable to hold back, retorted, "Do you think blaming your mother absolves you of all responsibility?"
"Enough!" Edward suddenly roared, "This is not your place to speak!"
