Chapter 296 Skylar's Dad
Edward seemed totally oblivious to Joshua and the nurse, still clutching me tightly and speaking urgently, "Diana, I know you're with him now, but I still worry about you. I'm Skylar's dad, and I used to know you better than anyone. How can I not care if something happens to you?"
"It's okay, Edward. Please, don't do this." I pushed him away, feeling helpless.
At that moment, Alaric politely addressed Edward, "Diana needs peace and quiet to recover. Your sudden intrusion isn't helping her."
Hearing this, Edward shot Alaric a fierce glare, jealousy dripping from his voice. "You're just her new boyfriend, right? Don't pretend to care. You mean nothing to me. You've only been with her for a short time. How well can you really know her?"
Alaric smiled calmly and replied, "We haven't been together long, but I can give her a stable life, and that's enough." His tone was calm yet powerful.
Edward's expression tightened even more. His hands curled into fists, and his body trembled slightly as he fought to contain his inner turmoil.
I wondered if Edward was reminiscing about our past, but now he could only watch as someone else stood by my side. I looked at Joshua, feeling grateful for his help today and relieved that his presence kept things from spiraling further out of control.
The young nurse spoke up again, her tone firm and unyielding. "Sir, please cooperate and don't disturb the patient."
Edward seemed to ignore the nurse, turning instead to Joshua, who was in his police uniform. It was clear he recognized Joshua, and he spat out through gritted teeth, "You again. Don't you get it? Diana will never be with you."
His voice was filled with anger and resentment, as if years of pent-up frustration were finally being unleashed.
Yet Joshua remained calm, meeting Edward's gaze steadily as he spoke, "I understand. My protection of Diana isn't about whether she chooses me. It's about my own feelings. More than anything, I care about her safety. That's my duty as a police officer and my responsibility as a friend."
I leaned against the hospital bed, looking at Edward's anxious face, filled with doubt. I couldn't help but question, "Edward, why are you suddenly so desperate to come here? We've been divorced for years. You wouldn't rush over just because you heard I was in trouble, would you?"
Edward's eyes darted around, but he quickly tried to compose himself, speaking earnestly, "Diana, no matter what happened between us, I'm still Skylar's father. I came because I was worried about you. As Skylar's father and your ex-husband, I have a responsibility to protect both of you."
I didn't believe his words at all, but instead of arguing, I shifted the conversation. "Do you know who caused me to end up in the hospital?"Edward's eyes flickered, and his voice dropped. "I... I don't know."
I scoffed, my tone sharp. "It was your dear sister Anne. She nearly caused a disaster at the café today."
At the mention of Anne's name, Edward's face tightened, guilt flashing in his eyes. He kept his head down, unable to meet my gaze, stammering, "I haven't been in contact with her. She's a radical person, but I didn't think she'd do something like this."
I stared at Edward, not missing a single change in his expression, my suspicions growing.
"Edward, you better tell the truth. Did you really not know about her actions? Do you know she tried to hack into the Howard Group's core system, attempting to bring it down again?" I asked.
Edward looked up, panic in his eyes, quickly waving his hands in denial. "Diana, you misunderstand me. I just found out she poured gasoline on you at the café. If I had known she would do something so irrational, I would have stopped her."
It seemed Edward did know something. At that moment, Alaric stepped forward, positioning himself between Edward and me, his tone serious. "Mr. Howard, we need to know the truth. If you truly care about Diana, stop hiding things."
Joshua also frowned slightly, adding, "This matter isn't just about Diana's personal safety. It also endangers public safety. As a police officer, I hope you'll honestly share what you know."
Sweat beaded on Edward's forehead, his face showing pain as he slowly began to speak, "She did come to me after getting out of prison, saying she couldn't let it go and wanted revenge. I advised her not to act impulsively, but I really thought she was just venting."
I looked at Edward in disbelief and said, "You knew she had ill intentions towards me but chose to hide it. I almost died because of her today. Is this what you call being responsible for Skylar?"
Edward's face was full of regret as he said, "Diana, I know I was wrong again. I thought Anne wouldn't go to such extremes; I didn't believe she had the guts. I'm truly sorry to you and to Skylar."
My eyes welled up with tears as I glared at Edward, my heart filled with anger.
"Edward, leave. I don't want to see you anymore." I tried to control my emotions, but my voice still trembled.
"You and Anne turned my life upside down. I thought I could finally have some peace, but you keep bringing me pain. I don't want to hear your excuses. I don't want to see you again. Leave!" My eyes were firm as I pointed towards the door, wishing Edward would vanish from my life for good.
At my words, Edward's lips parted as if to offer one final defense, but he held back. Despair filled his eyes as he slowly turned and dragged his heavy footsteps toward the door.
His figure looked incredibly desolate at that moment. The young nurse, who had witnessed everything, quickly followed him and gently closed the door behind them.
