Chapter 143 Letting Go Is Also a Kind of Love

Just as we thought, my involvement had affected Stellar Legal Advisors, and my heart sank. The Edward I once thought was upright had now resorted to such low tactics to force me to submit. I was beyond disappointed.

"His only goal is to stop Diana from divorcing him. So, the mess Stellar Legal Advisors is in now is inevitable in this complicated situation. Even if I were still at Stellar Legal Advisors, things wouldn't be much better—though some of the resources I've built up might help. Even though we're competitors now, you two are my alumni, and Stellar Legal Advisors is a firm I put a lot of effort into founding. I won't just stand by and watch it fall apart." he said seriously.

"So, you have to give your all to the cases you have now. Make sure every case is handled perfectly, at least ensuring that Stellar Legal Advisors keeps a good reputation. It's like keeping a spark alive in the darkness—this way, you'll have a chance to rise again in the future. Got it?" His voice was steady and powerful, each word hitting me like a heavy hammer, letting me know he genuinely wanted to help us through this tough time.

"Diana, it's up to you now," Nolan said.

But what could I do? I felt lost, like a lone boat in the vast sea, unable to find direction. I paced back and forth in the room, my brows furrowed, memories of Edward and me flashing through my mind. Those once beautiful memories now seemed so ironic.

"Diana, as your alumnus, I shouldn't interfere in your personal affairs, but I'm just reminding you that if you want to go back to him, then the problems you're facing now will no longer be problems. But if you still decide to divorce him, then Stellar Legal Advisors will likely face more trouble in the future." Nolan's words were no different from our previous speculations.

He was right; the fate of Stellar Legal Advisors was tightly linked to my marriage. To save Stellar Legal Advisors, did I really have to submit to Edward? But I was really unwilling.

I collapsed on the sofa in Lila's office, closed my eyes, and said weakly, "Lila, at this point, I think there's only one way."

"What good idea do you have?" Lila sat down beside me, looking at me with concern.

"I want to resign." I slowly uttered these words.

"Resign?" Lila's eyes widened in surprise and confusion.

"I can't let myself affect you and the entire Stellar Legal Advisors." I stared blankly at the ceiling, explaining helplessly, "Recently, our business has plummeted because of my relationship with Edward. I don't want everyone's efforts to be in vain. The lawyers who have been fighting with us shouldn't have to bear this."

Lila was incredulous. "What does that matter? Stellar Legal Advisors is yours." She stood up, her tone a bit anxious.

I shook my head and smiled bitterly. "Stellar Legal Advisors is yours. Ever since you and Edward signed the transfer agreement, this law firm has been yours. The reason he's targeting Stellar Legal Advisors now is just to make my life difficult. He wants to force me to submit through this method. But I have some savings, and even without this job, I can still live well."

I added, "But there are other lawyers at Stellar Legal Advisors who have families to support and need this job to make a living. If it weren't for the lack of cases, they wouldn't be jumping ship. So the best way now is for me to resign, giving you a chance to lead the other lawyers to rise again. Otherwise, we're too passive and will always be under Edward's control."

After hearing what I said, Lila went quiet for a long time. She walked over to the window, staring at the bustling street outside. After a moment, she suddenly smiled brightly, like she had let go of everything, and patted my shoulder casually. "Diana, go ahead and divorce him. If Stellar Legal Advisors goes under, we can just work somewhere else. We can fight for justice as lawyers no matter where we are. Isn't that why we became lawyers in the first place?"

Lila's enthusiasm used to be contagious, but this time, her optimism couldn't reach me. I slowly lowered my head, staring at the floor as if it held all my pain and helplessness. My voice was low and trembling. "Yeah, we can uphold justice anywhere as lawyers. But I'm really unwilling. Why does Edward get to control my life?"

My hands unconsciously clenched, my nails digging into my palms. I felt no pain, just a heart full of resentment toward Edward.

People often said that a good marriage was a woman's lifelong source of happiness, but for me, this terrible marriage was like a nightmare, bringing nothing but endless pain. After a moment of silence, I looked up and asked Lila, "Can I use your computer?"

She silently glanced at me, walked to the desk, and turned on the computer. The light from the screen illuminated her face, outlining her slightly tired features.

I took a deep breath, sat in front of the computer, and began to post an announcement on Stellar Legal Advisors' website. In the announcement, I briefly explained the reason for my departure, expressing my gratitude and apologies to Stellar Legal Advisors and my colleagues.

After posting the announcement, I opened my Facebook page, looking at the familiar interface, feeling a mix of emotions. After hesitating for a moment, I wrote in the status bar: [Letting go is also a form of love.]

My fingers tapped on the keyboard, each word carrying my determination. These words were like a farewell to the past and a hope for the future, hoping to break free from this chaos, even if it left me scarred.

After saying goodbye to Lila, I walked aimlessly towards my apartment. It was still afternoon, but the sky was frighteningly dark. I looked up at the overcast sky, my mood as dark and heavy as the weather.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck without warning, like a sword slicing through the sky, instantly lighting up the dark world. Then, large raindrops began to pour down, hitting me hard, as if God were venting his anger, each drop stinging my skin.

The few pedestrians on the street hurried to the shop awnings on both sides of the road to take shelter from the rain. Yet I numbly wiped the rain off my face, looking up again at the sky that seemed about to collapse. The rain mercilessly hit my face, then flowed down my neck, soaking my clothes.

What fell on me wasn't just rain, but uncontrollable tears streaming from my eyes. They mixed together, blurring my vision. The rain hit me so hard that I could barely keep my eyes open, so I closed them, letting the cold rain wash over me, as if it could cleanse my inner pain.

"Didn't you bring an umbrella? Take this one." A young voice suddenly sounded.
