Chapter 258 God-daughter
Gradually, the guests at the party started to leave one by one. By then, Theo was already waiting for me in the parking lot. Honestly, having a driver pick me up would have been easy enough, but ever since the car accident with Aria, Theo had been overly concerned about my safety, insisting on handling everything himself.
I walked slowly down the dimly lit hallway, the soft light casting long shadows around me.
Just then, I heard a faint sound of crying coming from a nearby room. The delicate sobs sounded strangely familiar.
My curiosity piqued, I stopped and leaned closer to the slightly ajar door, peeking inside cautiously.
The room was dark, only illuminated by the light seeping through the door crack. I could barely make out the furnishings, which seemed no different from a typical private room, but the atmosphere was oppressively heavy.
However, what I saw next made me gasp: Anne was completely naked, kneeling by the bed with her back turned to the door.
There was someone sitting on the bed, but his face was hidden in the shadows, making it impossible to see his features.
Anne sobbed bitterly, "Why do you always protect her and ignore me, even though we're both your goddaughters?"
The man slowly reached out, lifting Anne's chin, and coldly retorted, "Do you think you're the same kind of goddaughter as her?"
Though I couldn't see his face, his voice was as sharp as an ice pick, piercing through my nerves.
I could hardly believe my ears. The man speaking was my godfather—Nicholas! And the other goddaughter they mentioned was undoubtedly me.
At the party, I had already sensed an unusual closeness between Nicholas and Anne. But I never imagined that Anne was also recognized as his goddaughter.
Witnessing this scene, I was flooded with disturbing thoughts, yet I clung to a sliver of disbelief, hoping that I was mistaken.
Yet Anne's pitiful voice brought me back to reality. "You said you liked young girls, so I've tried my best to look like one, just to make you happy. Please, show me some compassion!"
But Nicholas's response was chilling. "You know you're just pretending. Do you really think you can pass as a young girl? Besides, ever since you took over the Howard Group, haven't I provided you enough resources? What more do you want from me?"
With that, Nicholas suddenly grabbed a handful of Anne's hair, yanking it back forcefully.
Anne was forced to tilt her head back, letting out a pained whimper. It was then that I noticed the thick iron chain around her neck. As she leaned back, the chain clinked, exposing gruesome wounds where it had chafed her skin, the blood vividly contrasting with the dim light.
"Tell me, what do you want me to do to show you compassion?" Nicholas's voice was laced with naked menace, as if he wanted to crush Anne.
Tears welled up in Anne's eyes, streaming down her pale cheeks like broken pearls. Despite this, she forced herself to appear delicate, her voice sickeningly sweet as she said, "Godfather, I want a lollipop."
Hearing this, Nicholas let go of her hair, his bony fingers gliding down her neck as he wiped away her tears with the back of his hand. Then, he suddenly grabbed her face, bringing his own into the light streaming through the door crack. I saw a sinister smile spread across his face as he sneered, "Anne, be good. I'll give you all the lollipops you want. But listen carefully, don't ever do anything to harm Diana again, understand?"
Hearing his words, Anne shuddered, nodding obediently.
For some reason, even though he was defending me, his words sent chills down my spine.
Anne, her voice trembling, pleaded, "Godfather, I'm sorry. I really am. I won't do anything to Diana ever again. Please don't be angry, forgive me this once."
At this, Nicholas nodded in satisfaction and spoke again, "If I catch you doing anything suspicious again, you know the consequences."
With that, he slowly stood up, methodically unbuckling his belt. The soft sound of fabric rustling filled the room as his pants slid down his legs. He then sat back on the bed. Seeing this, Anne, as if grasping at a lifeline, eagerly buried her head between Nicholas's legs, frantically licking.
The scene was too horrifying and my mind went blank with shock.
When I finally came to, my heart was pounding, and my legs moved on their own, sprinting towards the exit. In my panic, I knocked over a statue but didn't dare stop.
Once I was in Theo's car, my body continued to tremble, cold sweat soaking through my back.
Theo noticed my distress and turned to me with concern, asking softly, "Diana, are you okay? Did something happen tonight?"
I took deep breaths, trying to calm myself, and forced a calm tone. "Nothing, just a bit tired. Take me home, please."
With that, I closed my eyes, leaning weakly against the seat, desperately trying to erase the disturbing images from my mind.
The car slowly began to move, but throughout the ride, those nauseating scenes kept replaying in my mind.
I couldn't believe that Nicholas, who had always been so caring and supportive in both my career and personal life, could be so dark and twisted.
I thought of the rumors about Lucas's mother—how she had been with Nicholas at a young age, only to be abandoned. And Lucas's distance from him. It all made sense now. Nicholas, who publicly advocated against marriage and children, was secretly doing such heinous things.
I finally understood why Mia had been so adamant about not letting me recognize him as my godfather. She had been protecting me until her last breath.
Thankfully, Nicholas had never done me any harm. On the contrary, his support had helped the Cooper Group flourish. I silently hoped that if Mia could see this from above, she would find some solace in it.
The car stopped in front of my apartment building, and I slowly opened my eyes, feeling a bit more relaxed.
"Diana, do you want me to walk you up?" Theo's voice was gentle yet firm.
Hearing this, I shook my head, struggling to open the car door and get out. My legs were still weak, and I stumbled towards the building.
Behind me, Theo called out with concern, "Diana, get some rest and take care of yourself."
Those simple words brought me immense comfort, warming my heart.
