Chapter 114 But I Am His Wife

I pulled over near the residential area, my heart pounding and my mind racing with a million thoughts. Different scenarios kept flashing through my head, mixing fear and anger. Should I confront the car that had been tailing me? What if someone dangerous was inside? Remembering the times I'd been stalked and hurt before, I knew I had to find out, or the feeling of being followed would drive me crazy.

After a fierce internal battle, my anger won out. I couldn't just sit there, letting fear take over. I grabbed a baseball bat from the car, gripping it tightly. Maybe the bat gave me a bit of courage. Gritting my teeth, I decided to check out the car behind me and see who it was. My breathing was rapid, my body trembling slightly, but my eyes were full of determination.

To my complete surprise, it was David. A wave of anger surged through me, and I didn't bother to hide it. "Why are you following me?" I snapped, my tone cold and resolute, my eyes full of annoyance.

His face showed a mix of hurt and grievances, his eyes filled with pain. "Diana, please don't treat me this way. I genuinely care about you," he said, his voice trembling with sorrow.

His persistence only made me more irritated; I didn't want to deal with him at all. Coldly, I said, "Forget it. Go back. I'll pretend today never happened, and you don't bring it up again." With that, I turned and walked into the residential area without looking back.

The residential area had tight security, making it hard for even David to get in. All I wanted was to escape David’s entanglement and be alone with my thoughts. David could only watch helplessly as I disappeared through the entrance, his eyes filled with hurt and reluctance.

That night, everything was silent. I curled up alone on the sofa, staring blankly at my phone. It had been over 24 hours since Edward got injured, and my heart was heavy with worry about his condition. I had no idea how well he was recovering.

I was desperate to confront Edward face-to-face and ask him if what David said was true. The thought of those possible scenarios made my heart tighten. Finding Edward wasn't hard. Yesterday, the ambulance had taken Edward and Anne to the nearest hospital. Once they were out of immediate danger, they would likely go to Sunrise Hospital, which was funded by the Howard Group and had an elegant environment and high-end equipment. But it also had tight security. The private VIP wards reserved for the Howard family made it almost impossible for outsiders to get in.

Despite knowing the possible outcomes, like being blocked or not seeing Edward at all, I decided to give it a try. I figured if I timed it right when Clara wasn't around, I might have a chance to sneak into Edward's ward. Clara had to go home to take care of Hayden, who needed rehab therapy from 9 to 11 in the morning. That was my only window to see Edward.

Thinking about all this, I decided to get some sleep so I'd have enough energy to face Edward tomorrow. I knew it was going to be another tough battle, and I felt both nervous and uneasy. But just knowing that these issues would eventually be resolved made me feel a bit better. Things had to be dealt with sooner or later. With these thoughts, I slowly closed my eyes, exhausted and uneasy, drifting off to sleep. I hoped tomorrow would bring answers to my questions and some relief from my pain.

The private VIP ward at Sunrise Hospital was on the top floor, and the hospital corridors were super quiet. Luckily, I wore flat shoes for driving, so I wouldn't make a racket before reaching the ward.

"How could you do something so dangerous?" a delicate female voice echoed from the ward. It was Aria.

Then I heard Edward coughing.

My heart tightened, and I was about to rush in to help Edward, but as I reached the door, I hesitated and stopped, feeling conflicted. I heard the sound of water being poured, followed by gentle back-patting. Aria was inside, and she should be able to take good care of Edward. What would my presence add? I decided to stay by the door and quietly listen to their conversation. Maybe I could uncover some answers to my questions.

"I... I only did it for Anne," Edward said, his voice muffled as though he had just taken a sip of water.

"For Anne, you didn’t need to risk your own life!" Aria's voice was full of concern. "Look at you now—you're lucky you didn't damage your kidneys. If that had happened, we would have..."

"Enough, I don't want to hear any more," Edward interrupted Aria coldly. "No matter what, I can't let her harm Anne."

Hearing this, I felt my heart tighten. "For Anne," "We." What was Aria going to say? I matched these bits of information with what David had told me.

No! My heart was racing with panic. Lost in thought, I accidentally dropped my bag. The sound echoed sharply through the otherwise silent hallway.

Almost immediately, a nurse came over. She frowned slightly and asked softly, "Ma'am, are you okay? Is there something wrong?"

I hurriedly picked up my handbag and stammered, "No, I just dropped my bag."

The nurse looked at me suspiciously and asked again, "Are you here to visit a patient? This is the VIP ward, and no one is allowed to visit without permission."

I quickly nodded and whispered, "Sorry, I went to the wrong floor."

Noticing my agitated state, the nurse softened her tone a bit. "If there's no special situation, please leave quickly," she said, gesturing for me to leave.

Perhaps hearing the commotion outside, the ward suddenly became quiet. The sound of high heels softly clicking on the floor drew near, and Aria appeared at the door. When she saw me, a look of surprise flashed in her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. She raised her chin slightly, and looked me up and down, a faint, mocking smile appearing on her lips.

"Mrs. Diana Howard? What are you doing here?" Aria broke the silence first, her tone carrying a hint of questioning.

I stood there, feeling a bit uneasy. "I came to see Edward."

Aria snorted coldly and said, "Mrs. Clara Howard said Edward needs to rest, and no one is allowed to visit."

I bit my lip, feeling a surge of grievance. Then I said, "But I'm his wife."

Aria was silent for a moment, just about to say something when Edward's voice came from the ward. "Is that Diana? Let her in."

Aria's expression changed slightly, but she said nothing and stepped aside to make way.

I took a deep breath and slowly walked into the ward. Edward was lying on the bed, his face a bit pale. I looked at him, with a thousand things to say, but I didn't know where to start. For a moment, the atmosphere in the ward turned awkward, and the three of us stood in silence, the air seemingly frozen.
